Now that baseball season is over and college basketball in full effect, we thought it would be interesting to check out a few MLB stars that played other sports in college (in this instance basketball.)
Pictured Below-
Tony Gwynn (San Diego State)- Gwynn was a star point guard at San Diego State. He played all 4 years from 1977-1981 and was an assist monster. His best season was his junior year, where he averaged 11.1 ppg and 8.2 apg.
Kenny Lofton (Arizona)- Lofton was the backup point guard at Arizona for all 3 of his 4 years, and started every game his senior year. Lofton’s career averages were 4.8 ppg, 2.6 apg, and 1.6 spg. Kenny’s son (Kenneth), is currently a member of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Dave Winfield (Minnesota)- Winfield played 2 years at Minnesota, averaging 9 ppg and 5.8 rpg. He won a Big Ten Championship, and was also involved in the memorable brawl against Ohio State in 1972.
Chris Young (Princeton)- Young is the current GM of the most recent MLB Champion- Texas Rangers. At 6”10, it is no wonder he also played basketball in college. Not only did he play his first 2 years, but he was Princeton’s best player. In his 2 year career he averaged 13.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.2 apg, and 2.4 bpg.
