The Tower in Helensburgh ... worth a visit

The Tower Digital Arts Centre has now passed 42,000 visitors in the past 12 months. We have only been able to operate because of the massive commitment of all the volunteers involved, bringing first release cinema back to Helensburgh ( last cinema closed in 1980) would not have been possible without the extensive hours put in by the volunteers. The Tower has had over 40 volunteers in the past twelve months ranging from school students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Awards to retiree’s putting something back it to the town.

While every volunteer has made a difference, The Tower has acknowledged four in particular whose deeds have gone way beyond most to ensure the town has been able to enjoy the benefits of having a dedicated arts centre which doesn’t draw on any council funds or subsidy.

The youngest is 16 year old Caitlan Hendry who works at The Tower every Sunday morning and has not missed a shift in a year, tirelessly supporting the special needs screenings and preparing the venue for special events.

The oldest is Ms. Jean Holland who at 94 helped launch the successful 'Tower Silverscreen Sessions' (on every Thursday at 1pm), where we screen the latest films for the over 60’s (including and sandwich lunch with tea and cake). Every week Jean has helped identify and invite seniors in the community who now attend on a regular basis.

Malcolm Ross and Chris Leggett have also been acknowledged for their outstanding work and contribution to the Tower, Malcolm for his great work at the front of house and Chris Leggett without whose continuous maintainance and development of the building, The Tower would not be open today. All four have been awarded the 'Volunteer of the Year’ for being extraordinary in doing their part and by their efforts to providing the community with a world class venue.

Lost Glasgow

RMS Aquitania. Image David C Lawson

When it comes to the best ships in the world you have to start on the Clyde but which one? Here's a starter for 10. RMS Aquitania was a Cunard Line ocean liner designed by Leonard Peskett and built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. She was launched on 21 April 1913 and sailed on her maiden voyage to New York on 30 May 1914. Aquitania was the third in Cunard Line's "grand trio" of express liners, preceded by the RMS Mauretania and RMS Lusitania, and was the last surviving four-funnelled ocean liner. Widely considered one of the most attractive ships of her time, Aquitania earned the nickname "Ship Beautiful".

She held the record for the longest liner in service until this was overtaken by QE2.

Secret Station

Botanic Gardens Station - a secret station.

Here is one of Glasgow's underground secrets. Botanic Gardens Station was opened on 10 August 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway. The station building was on ground level, and the platforms were underground, beneath the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. It was closed between 1 January 1917 and 2 March 1919 due to wartime economy, and closed permanently to passengers on 6 February 1939, with the line being closed on 5 October 1964.

The station building was converted into shops after the station's 1939 closure and by the late 1960s was occupied by a popular café called 'The Silver Slipper', a nightclub called 'Sgt. Peppers' and a plumbers shop, 'Morton's'. It was ravaged by fire on the night of 22 March 1970 and demolished for safety reasons.

Ashton Lane
Such a popular haunt today. In the 1970s this one time mews was really pretty run down but in 1976 The Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant (no small fry even then) relocated here and this led to a new lease of life for the Lane. With modernisation going on on Byres Road other businesses moved temporarily into the Lane and the rest is history.

House for an Art Lover

Private View Thursday 15 May from 6.00 to 8.00pm

After what seems like a lifetime working in film and television, James Hamilton gets back to his roots with FRAGMENTS, his first solo exhibition in 25 years.

This new body of work celebrates two main themes - thirty years in editing and two dead parents. In the cutting room there was always the ever present freeze frame, unexpected, random still images, and then with the death of his parents the discovery of unseen, unknown photographs of deceased relatives; of his mother and father in their prime; young, vibrant - grandparents, uncles, second cousins …

In ‘full figurative mode’ and with a passion for old movies and ‘60s pop art plus a multitude of other influences (inevitable when kicking off an art career in your fifties) FRAGMENTS is a celebration of life and love.

Oh yeah - and there’s also some jazz...

Visit www.deadrainbow.com for further details on James Hamilton's work.
