throwing a bottle with about 3lbs of clay. i pulled the clay way too thin towards the top and each time i went to collar the neck it inevitably wanted to collapse. i attempted to blow it up and save it but eventually it actually just “blew up” 😅

a follow up to my previous plate throwing video. i let these dry really slow to avoid any cracks or warping and then trim up the bottoms to match the interior! i throw the bottoms really thin because i like them without a foot ring. and the bubble wrap is a good way to help with sinking once i’ve flipped them over! 🙃

i love making chucks and i love using chucks. making most of my trimming more efficient and secure. with these olive oil cruets especially! after each use i’ll dip them in water and store them in bags so they can stay leather hard for as long as possible. i used to bisque them but over the years i’ve found it much easier to get one leather hard surface to stick to another. 🤝

throwing has been slow lately. for the past few years my lower back has been in rough shape - it comes in waves but sometimes will put me out for a week or more. i’ve been to the doctor and in/out of PT for a few years. i stand while throwing - core stretches etc. this time it got really bad and i decided to go back to the doctor. it turns out i have two vertebrae that have shifted and there’s no space between them - so it’s just bone on bone. this has showed itself as a bump above my tailbone (i thought it was a bone spur) 🥴 with some rest and more stretching it’s starting to feel better but makes me scared for the future. i’ve been making pottery for the better part of 14 years and very much hope to triple that number! trying to be kind to myself and mindful of my body. it feels like the days of making pots for 8 hours might not be a thing. but i’m learning how to adjust and pace myself. i feel lucky to be making pottery and can’t thank you all enough for the support!! anyway, that’s my spiel. 😅❤️

a huge part of pottery is loss and being able to separate yourself from the pieces you make. it’s so easy to get attached to the things you create because of course you spent time on them and they’re precious!! such a crucial part of my process is being able to cut pots in half that i either messed up on, the shape wasn’t quite right, they were too thick/thin, or maybe i just wanted to practice. either way - cutting the pots in half reveals the inside or the “cross section” allowing me to learn and carry that through to the next pot! that being said it still hurts to give them them the 🪓🥴
