Owner: :) ok, how do I get organized?

Foxy: You are 100% right. Don't launch the ad. Build the ad. It will show what's missing in all your marketing messaging and will help you develop goals, images, design work, content, brand identity and more. It will help you get organized and detailed.

Foxy: I'll help you. Answer this question for me. What are some key words to describe your business, your industry, what you do, what you are good at and when your customers wake up in the morning, what makes them think about your business?

Owner: Sure, how much detail do you want?

Foxy: One or two key words for each of those broad areas. If you can think of more then put them down as well.

It feels good when a business takes an unexpected yet positive new direction. Foxy started helping marketing consultants project manage their client work and it's been amazing to see the results.

How to deal with fear when your business grows rapidly (How to avoid staying small).

The Comfort Zone

For most small businesses the comfort zone average is $750,000 in revenue per year. Typically they employ a few people. The owners work like crazy but manage it day to day because that's the comfort zone for them.

A business which doubles in size within 6 months moves out of the comfort zone and a lot of small business owners fear that feeling and worse yet, avoid growing because of it.

How to keep quality and lifestyle while they move through this process.

1. Keep learning (or get more help) - the comfort zone is what we know and when we move out of the comfort zone, we have to learn new things, experiences are new.

2. A bigger business in some ways becomes easier to manage because there are more resources available. But getting to that stage requires moving out of the comfort zone.

3. Be ready for growth. Plan and get help where needed. Don't try to do everything yourself, its counter-productive.

4. Be ready for change - the way you did business while small will be different to how you do business when you are bigger. The structure of the team changes. These are positives, you just need to learn about a new comfort zone in a bigger space.

5. Quality - make sure you invest in what is required so the customer experience remains stable if not better as you grow. You may not be able to talk to every customer, so you need someone to help. Or you may need to talk to every customer but 90% of other things you do can be done by someone else.

6. Keep the end goal in mind - stay focused

Finding a niche for your business - explained

How many times have you thought about or been told to go and find a niche or target a certain type of customer.

How many times have you asked yourself what does that mean, especially as I can service any customer who walks in the door.

Finding a niche doesn't mean you exclude everyone who falls outside the group. What it means (and especially in advertising) is that you can pinpoint the exact message, right down to the key things that a target is interested in, so that you maximise the chances of them seeing your business (brand).

It makes it easier for more people to explain your business to others - which is great marketing, getting others to talk about your business.

In the end it saves you money because it saves marketing spend for the maximum return on investment. At Foxy we say small business should expect a 10x ROI (one thousand %).

Example
Assume you have decided that your target is male and they are professionals. Lets go even further and say they are accountants.
That is a very narrow niche.....but wait.
It allows you to determine exactly where to focus some of your marketing and develop the exact keywords which that target audience is looking at.

Then test your marketing, measure the results for that niche. The great news is you then optimise your messages for a wider group or another niche. You expand your results exponentially.
