Today we want to spotlight Jennie, a storyteller we met through Community Vision. ZP had the pleasure of spending several days with Jennie learning about the empowering experience that moving into a place of her own has been.
“It’s important to provide affordable housing to Oregonians who experience disability because it is their right,” says Anna Keenan-Mudrick, Executive Director of Community Access Services (CAS). Jennie was receiving support from CAS when she expressed that she wanted to live on her own. CAS was quick to connect Jennie with Community Vision and help make that dream a reality. Today, Jennie lives in a single-bedroom apartment where she has easy access to public transportation and community events, but most importantly, she has the freedom to live her most authentic life.
We’re grateful every day that we get to meet natural storytellers like Jennie, who are continuously helping us see the world from new perspectives. We’d like to thank Jennie for opening the conversation about the outstanding need for affordable housing, particularly among our friends experiencing disability.
The entire ZP team looks forward to watching what Jennie conquers next!

ZP Productions turned 20 this week! A lot has changed, including inflation, since our Head Cheerleader, Zach Putnam, printed his first invoice 20 years ago. But some things just never change…like Zach’s sick air and his undeniable knack for storytelling. Congratulations Zach, and thank you to all of the wonderful organizations who continue to trust ZP to help tell their stories. Here’s to 20 more!🎉
ZP Productions accepted two new Telly Awards last week in the non-broadcast category. These awards bring our grand total of Telly’s to 19, and welcomes a time of pride and reflection for our team. We’re honored to get to help share stories of impact and are so appreciative when organizations like the Telly Awards offer an opportunity to highlight some of those stories.
This years winners are:

As AAPI heritage month comes to a close, it’s important to remember the troubling history Portland has had with Asian American and Pacific Islander relations. The “Torii Gates” shrine located at the Portland Expo Center serves as a memorial for the 3,500 Japanese prisoners who were temporarily housed there before being placed in internment camps during WWII. The “Torii Gates” sculpture was designed by Portland artist, Valerie Otani. Each metal tag represents an individual incarcerated at the Expo Center. “It was very important to her that these stories were preserved and made known,” says Kenji Spielman, son of Valerie Otani. These stills come from a project we worked on last year where we spoke with Valerie Otani’s son about the importance of keeping the conversation of Asian history in America going.

Have you wondered how can we help people share their stories in ways that empower them and inspire donors, without exploiting anyone’s struggle and pain? How can we make storytellers feel safe and trust that their stories will be told with the utmost respect and in a way that they would want them to be told? These questions and more will be answered during the workshop.

Last weekend celebrated the 25th anniversary of Jean’s Place, Portland's first permanent women’s shelter. One of the stories we produced for their event featured a transgender woman named Leah-Nora. While homeless, Leah-Nora experienced bigotry, discrimination, and threats of violence. She was so relieved when she found Jean's Place, a shelter where she felt welcomed and safe. With the individualized support she received there, Leah-Nora is now thriving in a home to call her own.
"This is our last, best hope." - Leah-Nora says about Jean’s Place
We were honored to produce three stories that highlight the positive impact Jean’s Place has made on our community. Visit tprojects.org to watch all the stories and donate to support the cause.

Throwback Thursday! We’ve been working on a video for @helpinghandshopecenters with our storyteller Josh, and when he mentioned being on the cover of the newspaper… we knew we had to find it! Zach put his journalist roots to the test and went on an archival goose chase through card catalogs and microfiche reels at the Astoria public library where he and the librarian were able to serve up some grade A images to use in our film 📓 Major shoutout to @astorialibrary !! Support your public libraries!! 📚

The Coggan Aquatic Complex is more than just a pool-- it's a critical athletic proving ground, meeting place, and community hub for the coastal town of La Jolla, CA. In this video, we spoke with Coach Tom Atwell to explore what the Coggan means to him, what it means to La Jolla, and why the community should come together to invest in its renovation.
When Michael moved into Partnership Home in May 2020, he was isolated in his room almost never coming out to socialize. Prior to that he spent over a year being homeless in his native community around Cloverdale, CA. He slowly began coming out of his room, and built a great friendship with a couple of residents. . “If it hadn’t been for Reach for Home, I definitely wouldn’t have lived this long and have such a beautiful room and a beautiful life I’m living,” - says Michael. . @reachforhome helps people in North Sonoma County who are struggling with or at risk of losing housing. . #reachforhome #nonprofit #documentary #housing #sonomacounty #partnershiphome

Our recent Habitat for Humanity short documentary is featured in Willamette Week’s Give!Guide. Give!Guide is Willamette Week’s annual effort to raise funds for — and draw attention to — the good works of local nonprofits. @giveguide has raised over $40 million for hundreds of local nonprofits since its inception in 2004. We hope to feature more of our clients who are participating in G!G over the next couple months, so keep an eye out! This story follows Sandra, who after moving 18 times in her life, finally has long-term stability for her family to grow and thrive. It’s been seven years since she purchased a house with Habitat for Humanity. She’s formed bonds with her neighbors who helped build each other’s homes. Their children surpassed language and cultural differences to make lifelong friends with other kids in their community. “No matter what challenges life brings, my kids know this is their safe home,” Sandra says. “I sometimes get their friends that need a safe place and a hot meal, which I am more than happy to provide.” You can donate to @habitatportlandregion and other local nonprofits through the @willametteweek Give!Guide between November 1 and December 31 to make a difference in the Portland metro area. #willametteweekgiveguide #nonprofitstorytelling #habitatforhumanity #seasonofgiving
