Amit Kapoor - The Art of Composition
Joining us all the way from New Dehli, India, watercolorist Amit Kapoor Watercolors kicked off the 3rd day of PleinAir Live with a session that focused on how to capture light and shadow en plein air. He also noted the importance of proportion and alignment: "Perspective gives more depth, volume, and distance in your paintings."
Don Demers - The Power of Painting
Plein air painting has been a form of study for hundreds of years, Don Demers said. In his PleinAir Live session, he explained the transition from painting on location to advancing that work in the studio. As he referred to his plein air study, he assured us that although he's been doing this for a long time, he still employs the basic techniques of composition and proportion.
Shuang Li - Clip from her Watercolor Demo at PleinAir Live
Painting on location from a beautiful harbor in California, Shuang Li Watercolors gave a watercolor demo during #PleinAirLive. Her subject included water in the foreground and a boat in the background. She painted until it was “85 percent” done, and then finished the painting in her studio.
John Budicin - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
John Budicin says for him, painting outdoors is "exhilarating" and Mother Nature is the artist's best teacher. He gave an afternoon plein air demonstration from a wash in San Bernandino, California. He finished the demo by continuing to work on the painting in his studio.
Tim Horn - Plein Air Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Timothy Horn, artist headed to Cavallo Point in Sausalito, California for his Plein Air Live demo! He was inspired to paint a scene featuring this military house that was built around 1900 because of its classic architecture, red roof, and the warm white color of the building against the darker background.
Roos Schuring - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Painting a parasol and figures on a summer beach with a hazy sky, Roos Schuring Fine Art started with a warm first layer in acrylic, then began sketching the basic shapes of her composition and laying in the initial colors. She reassured us not to worry if everything's less than perfect at the beginning stage of one's painting. Bonus: We had the pleasure of hearing the ocean waves in the background as she painted on location.
Rich Gallego - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Rich Gallego Fine Art says there is beauty all around us if we open our eyes and look. For his #pleinairlive demo, he used a vertical palette to paint snow-covered mountains in the distance.
Marc Anderson - PleinAir Live Demo Sneak Peek
Joining us from Door County, Wisconsin, Marc Anderson was enthusiastic about painting on a misty day that lent itself to a landscape painting with muted colors and grays, giving his colors subtle shifts in temperature for a "moody" scene.
Enjoy this quick clip from Marc's #pleinairlive demo!
Shanna Kunz - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Day One officially starts today! Ogden Valley, Utah provides beautiful places to paint, as The Art of Shanna Kunz proved with her on-location #pleinairlive demonstration.
Debra Huse - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Simple and straightforward was the theme for Debra Huse American Impressionist's plein air lesson. She filmed from the San Diego River in California and "zoomed in" on the foreground to capture the light and shadow with a focus on evening light and sunset clouds.
Dan Marshall - PleinAir Live Watercolor Tip
Dan Marshall Art Atelier 71 said that the biggest impact in his art career came when he began painting en plein air. In his Essential Techniques #pleinairlive session, he guided us on the basic supplies - and concepts - that are useful for painting outdoors.
Lisa Skelly - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Pastel painter The Fine Art of Lisa Skelly joined us for Essential Techniques Day of PleinAir Live with an outdoor demo from Laguna Beach. Fittingly, her session focused on how to paint the beautiful waves and surf, with a focus on composition, value structure, and shapes.

PleinAir Live Demo w/ Carrie Curran - The Importance of Having Fun
For her PleinAir Live demo, second-generation plein air painter Carrie Curran joined us on location from Scottsdale, Arizona, overlooking the Sonoran desert during the golden hour of sunset. When painting outdoors, she tells us, "You never know what's going to happen, but it's fun."
Poppy Balser - PleinAir Live Demo (Sneak Peek)
Whether she's working with watercolor or oils, Poppy Balser Paintings uses a similar limited palette. In her lesson, she took us on a deep dive into understanding color, including hue, chroma, and value, as she painted a still life of an onion from a photo reference with strong highlights and shadows.
