Simpson first Barbadian in Le Mans 24 Hours

The Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) has congratulated former island karting Champion Kyffin Simpson, who this weekend (June 15/16) becomes the first Barbadian to compete in the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours. While he is currently racing in the NTT IndyCar series in the United States, Simpson is no stranger to endurance events, having won the 2023 European Le Mans Series with Algarve Pro Racing.
Speaking from Samarkand in Uzbekistan, where he is attending the 2024 FIA Conference, FIA World Motor Sport Council member and BMF President Senator Andrew Mallalieu said: “We are delighted to have a Barbadian competing for the first time in what is perhaps the world’s most famous. Le Mans is one of motor sport’s greatest challenges and we wish Kyffin and his team-mates good fortune this weekend.”
Simpson joins the Nielsen Racing team for the French classic, sharing an Oreca 07-Gibson with Swiss driver Fabio Scherer, who won LMP2 at Le Mans last year, and Denmark’s David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH). Yesterday, they qualified 10th in the 16-strong LMP2 class and 32nd overall in the field of more than 60 cars.
There is further Free Practice this evening and Friday, with a warm-up at mid-day on Saturday morning, before the race starts at 4.00pm (10.00am Barbados).

Epic News! 🏁🇧🇪

Heading back to the Ypres Rally Belgium next week, and this time I'm driving something truly special: M Power. Huge thanks to my friend Bjorn Syx for the incredible opportunity to drive his iconic BMW M3 E30 Group A Factory spec, the 50th car built by MATS.

I'll be joined by my good mate and first ever co-driver, Michael Gilbey. Last year, I was buzzing to finish 1st in the Belgian Rally Championship and 2nd overall, closely behind the MSPORT Rally1 driver Adrien Fourmaux. While I’m not sure we can replicate those results driving this legend, we’re going to savour every moment of this fantastic opportunity.

Bjorn, who's competing in a Rally2 car, said it was a tactical decision to offer me a drive in his BMW to keep us from finding a Rally2 and battling him for the win 😜...

A huge thanks to all our partners for their support. If you'd like to support the team and join our test session in Ypres, please reach out at [email protected]. Let's make some memories!

This weekend will see the BP Rally Team out in force as two cars take on the Scuderia Vervica Rally van Wervik. Both Bill Paynter with Andy Hollingham alongside, and Scott Barnes with Andy Hall are competing on the event. It will be Scott’s third round of this years Flanders International Rally Challenge and he’ll be looking to put himself back on top following a mechanical retirement at last month’s ORC Canal Rally. Scott and Andy will hope to resume battle with last years FIRC champions, Rene Walraven and Joyce Ruiter as it was nip and tuck at ORC. The 106 has undergone a comprehensive re-prep with Scott removing the engine and gearbox, stripping and checking the engine and fitting a new clutch in readiness for the event. The crew are more motivated than ever to make sure they bring home the result they deserve this weekend. It will be Bill’s first event behind the wheel in the FIRC, although not his first time at the Rally van Wervik, hoping to put an end to the rotten luck that he has been served there previously. The Subaru crew will be hoping to carry good form from a solid start to the season at both Moorslede and Monteberg. For both crews, the top priority is to get a finish. The team’s dream result would be to try and bring home a win in both the 4WD and 2WD FIRC classes. With a jam packed entry consisting of 11 Rally 2 cars, 6 GT cars and plenty of other modern machinery, it will be difficult to get too close to the top of the overall standings, but the team remain confident that they can put on a show and impress on the classic Flanders stages.
The event is based in the town of Wervik and is well known as being the ideal test for Ypres, being held just one week before Belgiums most iconic event. An all star entry includes the likes of ex-F1 ace Jos Verstappen (father of Max) and ex-WRC legend Fast Freddie Loix who will be sampling the new Yaris Rally 2 car for the first time competitively. The events 12 stages will all be run on Saturday, with 140km’s of stages for the BP Rally runners to get stuck into. Live results will be available at https://rallyresultaten.be/2024/Wervik2024.html throughout the day and our page will again be kept up to date throughout the event. As always, we would like to thank all of our partners for their support-

Shortly after last year’s Nicky Grist Stages, long time Quinton Motor Club committee member, previous event winner and Clerk of the Course Pete Bowles passed away.

Pete’s love of rallying and the event was infectious, and those that knew him would be entertained by his many stories of rallies won and lost.

In tribute to our much-missed friend ‘Bowlsey’, the Nicky Grist Stages will honour his memory in these ways:

Firstly, the award for the best-placed co-driver who is a Quinton Motor Club member on the Nicky Grist Stages is hereby renamed the Pete Bowles Shield.

Secondly, all event rally plates will carry this logo (see picture).

Thirdly, the Crychan stage, which has been a constant ever since the event moved to the Builth Wells region, will be renamed Crychan Stage Bowlsey as a lasting tribute.

In fact, in 2024 Crychan will be called the Wilderness Signs Bowlesy Stage, thanks also to our stage sponsor Wilderness Signs.

For those of you don’t know, as well as being a mega talented driver, Scott Barnes is also the mastermind mechanic behind the whole operation. Having worked at Williams Formula 1 team for many years since doing his apprenticeship there, including a number of years on the race team, Scott’s mechanical and engineering abilities are a massive part of the teams success. He built his first Peugeot 106 rally car at the age of 18, and has built a number of other “toys” for himself and others over the years. He was a huge part of building Bill’s Peugeot 106 Rallye, which won it’s class in the UK National championship, and has also helped Bill massively with the development and running of the Subaru. As well as helping with the running of Gary’s cars over the years, the Celica GT-Four, Corolla WRC and the Hyundai i20 WRC. He has done pretty much all the work himself on his current car which is arguably one of the most advanced and fastest Peugeot 106’s out on the stages, especially with him behind the wheel! His professional approach can be seen in the quality of his work on all of the cars. A big thank you from us all at BP Rally Scott!
