Spanish company Blumeprot, based in Barcelona, has invested in a Haas UMC-750 five-axis machining centre. The machine, which has cut set-up times dramatically, is producing complex parts to tight tolerances, from materials ranging from various aluminium alloys, to titanium and surgical-grade stainless steels. The semi-finished part photographed here is from a batch of wheel hub components for a French rally car team. Made from magnesium, it requires the machining of numerous critical features, including scallops, ribs, bosses, irregularly shaped pockets, and inclined surfaces, most to tolerances of 0.02 mm.

India is full of clever engineers. In fact, most cities have at least one or two specialised engineering schools, and it's not uncommon to find CNC machinists with doctorates or masters degrees. This Haas customers does lots of 5-axis work for the world's best known aerospace companies. Notice he's also wearing a Haas wrist watch; a reminder when he looks at the time that his Haas machines are busy making money 24-hours a day.

Like so many Haas customers around the world, the owner of Nicolai Bikes, Kalle Nicolai, is a self-taught machinist. After working for a well-known US bike company, he eventually found his way back to Germany where he set-up his eponymous company to make some of the best downhill and cross country machines money can buy. This photo shows him with CNC machined parts from an early version of the bicycle gearbox he designed and built himself.

Haas Automation UK customer Retro Track and Air uses a VF-5TX with extended table to machine cylinder heads for V12 Rolls Royce Merlin engines for the Spitfire fighters and the Avro Lancaster bomber of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The parts are made from 80-year old drawings, to the same spec as they were originally, in the 1930s (design changes are not allowed). Even the material is the same: a special alloy referred to as RR50, developed before WW2 for motor racing engines. According to Head of Design, Gavin Faulks (not pictured), the Haas has allowed the company to take control of quality and precision like never before: "The difference between the old parts and those we can make on the Haas is like the difference between night and day," he says.
