Yes, Black people go camping by: Alonzo Clark

During Black History Month, Erica and Rosemary Saal came out to North Carolina A&T State University to screen the movie An American Ascent - a film that chronicles an all black team of climbers making their way to the top of America’s Highest Peak, Denali. With Erica flying from Toronto, and Rosemary, from Seattle, it was amazing to me that they would come all the way to North Carolina to assist me in wanting to screen this movie.

One big issue that night, and the only issue, is that our room that was assigned to us didn’t have a working projector screen (they told me it would be fixed 🤬) nonetheless we rolled with the punches as students and community members alike enjoyed the two-tone film (top half of the movie on a white surface and the other half on blue 🤦🏾‍♂️.) Despite the small hiccups, the attendees had a great and engaging time. So much so that I had to cut off the questioning as to stay on time.

What was really amazing that night wasn’t the raw enthusiasm and energy that Erica and Rose brought, nor their smiles that lit up the room, nor all of the free pizza and NOLS swag, but the representation that the students saw on the screen that further sparked their interest and the validation they received as they thought to themselves, “yes, we do this too.”

Once again, thank you NOLS, thank you Erica, and thank you Rose. As most of the attendees of our outdoor trips are women, I thank you for empowering them and allowing them to see themselves in you two.

National Trails and Rivers 50th Anniversary Forum

This is a recent video from my attendance at as a with the American Hiking Society.

At the Yates Auditorium in the U.S. Department of the Interior, I had a chance to address key officials for the Partnership for the National Trails System and Rivers 50th Anniversary Forum. The different agency representatives on the stage mentioned the importance of increasing access of trails to underserved and diverse communities. As the facilitator of outdoor recreational experiences at North Carolina A&T State University, I wanted to know specific ways in which each agency was tackling that issue. I was excited and surprised to hear that Wilderness Inquiry project was just one of the ways in which they were tackling this issue. Watch the video for their other responses.
