The Wheel song-by-song, #11: ‘If There’s A God On My Side’

Did you think I’d end the album on an upbeat note? That would be too easy. Life is messy and happens in cycles, nothing gets tied up in a neat bow, patterns return and return, and sometimes ‘God is a concept by which we measure our pain’, as John Lennon said. And sometimes She shows up in inexplicable ways, when you least expect Her. After my dad heard this song, he called me and said ‘I just figured out why God is a She to you. It’s because you have daughters.’ I was very moved by that insight. I hadn’t thought of it myself. I had a son 6 years later, who has the same elevated status as my daughters in my heart, and I don’t actually think of God as a personified being, but it’s still a beautiful sentiment.
A plea and a question close the album. And I love the questions.

The Wheel song-by-song, #10: ‘Fire of the Newly Alive’.
I noticed after writing a lot of these songs that they had a lot of nature metaphors— storms, wind, rain, the ocean— and fire. Fire shows up a few times in various songs. I was not aware of all the fire images (and the ashes of fire) until the songs were assembled and recorded. I don’t think I want to say too much about this song, because my kids may read this and get embarrassed. Extrapolate.

The Wheel song-by-song #9: ‘Roses In The Fire’.
I’ve written a couple of songs out of blind rage—one was ‘Like Fugitives’ from Black Cadillac, but it was heavily tempered by resignation. Roses In The Fire isn’t tempered by much. A bit of compassion, perhaps. Maybe some determination to get to the other side of the anger and heartache in the line ‘I’ll kill you if we can’t be friends’. (Never let it be said that I don’t exaggerate my instincts in service of a rhyme.) In any case, singed roses have a strange and delightful odor, and I say this from experience.

The Wheel song-by-song, #8: Tears Falling Down
John and I co-wrote this song— one of the few on the album I didn’t write solo— and in some ways it’s always seemed to be a companion song to The Truth About You, another co-write. If the songs were scenes in a movie, Tears Falling Down would come right after The Truth About You. The melancholy confidence of The Truth About You gets rattled in Tears Falling Down. But there’s still a flag planted for Romance: ‘It’s your eyes close to mine that lets in the light’. Then and now.

From The Ashes

From The Ashes was one of the first songs we recorded for The Wheel. I was feeling dismantled and upended when I wrote it, and I wrote it to give myself hope. I believe in the power and mystery of art and music, and I must have thought that if I wrote a song believing that I would rise like a phoenix from the ashes of an old life, that the future would pick up the radio signal and start to create it for me. I was right, however it happened. ‘I hold on to faith inside my fear.’
I always have, always will.

The Wheel song-by-song, #5:
‘You Won’t Let Me In’

I’ve always thought this song, and John’s arrangement, is one of the sexiest tracks on the album. It’s sort of relentless in its longing and frustration, underpinned by the ecstatic hope in the line ‘I’m changing like a girl/on the threshold of her life’. The rhythm and lyrics are seamless to me. I’m knocking on his door, and he took some time to answer.

This was an instance (among many to come) when John’s instincts as a producer served me really well: he turned my song, which I wrote on guitar simply as a folk song, into a driving, R&B-influenced anthem.

The Wheel song-by-song, #3:
‘Change Partners’

Sometimes the trajectory of our lives and what we thought our future would be gets upended by unseen and unexpected forces.
It’s like the model in physics when things are broken down so that they can re-assemble in more refined way. Maybe ‘refined’ isn’t the best word for a human life, maybe ‘real and true’ is better.
My first marriage wasn’t a failure, it just ran its course. I learned a lot and received some wonderful gifts.
But ‘someone became me’, in part because of John Leventhal, my partner in a million ways.
