We are very used to thinking of God as He. With a capital ‘H’. There has not been much space in Christian tradition for viewing God as anything but male. The God of the Bible, we tend to assume, is entirely masculine. But, in fact, there is also a wealth of feminine imagery for God in the Bible,...

Monasticism is not just for people who are part of a convent or a monastery. There are many people who are part of monastic communities while living normal, every day lives. One of these communities is that of the Benedictine Oblates, who seek to follow the rule of Saint Benedict. On International W...

Here is your Godrey Birtill Song-Of-The-Day. I didn't manage one yesterday.

When I shared my podcast conversation with Godfrey Birtill (link in the comments, if you'd like a listen) three people expressed particular enthusiasm for this song. It was interesting to hear how it had been absolutely on the mark as a prophetic challenge in one instance many years ago. I think it probably still is!

I like it too. For me, it hits both the 'refreshingly honest protest song' vibe and the 'all I want to do is worship' one. Which is quite an achievement, in one song. Listening to it the other day, it also struck me as a quite a good antidote for all the heated debate about which metaphor to explain the cross (I think we need them all, by the way) is the most true.

This is my Godfrey Birtill Song of the Day.

I love the way the Message version of the Bible puts those verses about yokes that are easy:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

If you've ever found yourself wearing yourself out with the business of prayer, this song is for you. Enjoy.

And there's also a link here to the podcast that I did with Godfrey.

Godfrey Birtill has been singing and writing songs and producing albums at the rate of about one a year for more than 25 years. I have decided that over the next few days I am going to share some of my favourite Godfrey Birtill songs. This one is called "It's a Wonderful Dance". Stephen and I sang "Lord of the Dance" at our wedding. Increasingly, I realise that life with Jesus is an invitation to the dance of the Trinity. It's not an organised Foxtrot, this dance, it's free flowing, spontaneous. A dance that incorporates any steps we're willing to contribute. As my inner child has become more integrated into who I am, as I gradually lose my hang-ups, the dance becomes more free, more fun. Our bodies may shrivel as we age, but our souls keep dancing!
