A panel discussion at the Jewellery Show is tailored content for the British Asian jewellery community, and will look at opportunities and challenges facing this segment of the UK jewellery market which punches above its weight in terms of its turnover driven by 22-carat gold jewellery sales. The panel will cover opportunities such as how to reach out to super-affluent jewellery customers from the Indian dispora visiting the UK, as well as challenges such as a growing trend for violent crimes against jewellers, linked to a wider public perception of buoyant gold prices.

The discussion will also focus on the British Asian Jewellers’ Alliance (BAJA), which plans to lobby groups such as the NAJ to protect the interests of the British Asian jewellery community.

The panel, moderated by Jewellery Outlook Editor David Brough, is open to trade visitors at the Jewellery Show, Olympia, and will begin at 11.20 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visited trade show IIJS Premiere on August 10, 2024, to underline Indian government support for the gems and jewellery industry, after a recent sharp drop in the gold import duty stimulated demand.

Mr Goyal has been a staunch supporter of India’s gems and jewellery industry and, during his visit, outlined to delegates his vision to help develop the industry further, including plans to modernise the Special Economic Zone SEEPZ in Mumbai, develop an industrial park in Mumbai, and support craftsmanship to meet growing demand for handmade jewellery. India’s leading jewellery trade show, IIJS Premiere (August 8-13, 2024), saw high visitor turnout from the start, reflecting a buoyant domestic Indian jewellery market. Buyers packed into the halls at the two venues, the Jio World Convention Centre and the Bombay Exhibition Centre (Nesco), to restock gold jewellery, gemstones and pearls for the coming wedding seasons.

The gold jewellery hall in the Jio World Convention Centre, was crammed with visitors and buyers as the event kicked off on August 8, auguring for vibrant wedding season demand in the coming months.

India is the world’s second largest jewellery market, organisers said. Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President of De Beers, in an address at Jio on August 8, said the natural diamonds market was presently at a low point in the cycle, weighed by slow Chinese demand.

He voiced optimism that natural diamond prices would pick up, and referred to a “broadly stable”, soft market presently in the United States, where natural diamonds faced competition from lab-grown diamonds in some segments.

IIJS Premiere attracts many domestic buyers restocking from exhibitors such as KIK Jewells Pvt. Ltd. offering contemporary designs of traditional pieces set in 22-carat gold, diamonds and coloured gemstones.

At the inauguration ceremony at Nesco, INHORGENTA Exhibition Director Stefanie Maendlein presented plans for an India pavilion at the Munich show in 2025. Emil Guzekis, Chairman of Zen Diamond, revealed the Turkish brand’s plans to open their first shop in Mumbai in August 2024, offering a wide selection of diamond jewellery, as part of an international retail expansion.
