There's a gap between what needs to exist and what actually does.

Throughout my career in naval aviation and aerospace environments, I've watched organizations wrestle with this same reality. Something critical that should exist but doesn't. Or something that exists in a form that stopped working years ago.

The interesting thing is, the expertise to fix it is usually already in the room. The access is there. The people who could solve it are often sitting at the same table.

At some point, waiting for someone else to solve it stops making sense.

For me, the answer was a documentary about the northern snakehead's seventeen-year spread through Arkansas waterways. This invasive species has been changing ecosystems in this region for nearly two decades, and the story hasn't been told at the level it deserves.

A lot of times, organizations in aerospace, defense, and first responder work are sitting on a version of the same decision. The need is real. The resources are there. And the question becomes whether to keep waiting or start building what needs to exist.

Some stories and some solutions won't happen unless someone decides to make them happen.

That's not a downtime moment. That's the actual work happening.

I've been on enough sets to know where most technical productions break down. It's not the equipment. It's not the location. It's the assumption that you can put someone in front of a camera and expect the shot to just come together.

Especially when your talent aren't actors. They're engineers, operators, subject matter experts who know their systems inside and out but have never been on a set before.

You can find people with the right background, build the right environment, light it properly, and still walk away with nothing usable if the camera side hasn't done the work of translating what they do naturally into what the lens actually needs.

On a technical shoot, that conversation is about pace.
- How long to hold a position.
- Where an action needs to breathe before the next move.
- When not to look at the camera.

Small things that feel completely unnatural to someone who's never done this before, but they disappear in the cut when they land right.

The shot that works was built in the conversation before it ever happened. That's where the production actually lives.

Two snakeheads. One angler. One Arkansas river most people in this state don't even know exists.

We were filming on location for a snakehead documentary when he pulled both out of the water. Air-breathing, invasive fish that have established populations across eleven drainages in Arkansas. Still spreading. No active eradication program running. And most Arkansans have no idea they're out there.

Cole has been chasing snakeheads recreationally for years. He knows these watersheds. He understands the problem at the operational level because he's been in the water documenting it himself.

That's exactly why he's one of the key subjects we sat down with for this project. We're telling the story of what's actually happening in these ecosystems, not just repeating the surface-level narrative most people hear.

When you're trying to communicate a complex environmental or conservation issue to a broad audience, you need someone who's doing the work. Not someone summarizing reports from a conference room.

The real story is always with the people in the field.

Gavin already knew.

That's what a consistent collaborator buys you on location. When someone has done this work with you before, the day runs differently. Setup is faster, misreads get caught earlier, and the friction that typically costs an hour quietly disappears.

Throughout my career in naval aviation and aerospace environments, I've seen firsthand how critical it is to work with people who understand the mission before you walk on location.

In technical production especially, where the location window is tight and the environment doesn't accommodate a learning curve, who you bring on location shapes what the day can actually deliver.

A lot of times, companies treat crew selection like a checklist. Find someone available. Match the rate. Move on.

But the reality is, when you're working in complex operational environments with aerospace, defense, or first responder organizations, the people you bring determine whether you're spending the first two hours of the day explaining how things work or actually getting the work done.

Crew selection is quiet work. It happens before the shoot ever starts. And it shows up in what you're able to deliver when it matters.

Most invasions don't announce themselves.

I've been thinking about this a lot on set while we work on Mouth of the Monster. The northern snakehead has been in Arkansas waters since 2008.

It spreads through connected waterways, takes hold in new drainages, and keeps moving. There's no active eradication program. Most people in this state have no idea it's here.

When you look at the water, nothing signals a problem. That's the whole point. The invasion is already underway, but it doesn't look like one.

Organizations lose institutional ground the same way.

Throughout my career in naval aviation and aerospace environments, I've seen how knowledge bases thin out gradually.

An experienced engineer retires. A key operator moves to another department. Someone who understood a critical system inside and out is gone, and suddenly there's a gap.

Nobody sounds an alarm because nothing looks obviously wrong yet. The operations continue. The team keeps functioning. But the knowledge transfer didn't happen, and over time, those gaps start to compound.

By the time the problem becomes visible, it's already established.

Teams are struggling with concepts that used to be common knowledge. Training takes longer. Mistakes happen more frequently. And recovering that lost expertise is exponentially harder than preserving it in the first place.

A lot of aerospace, defense, and first responder organizations are incredibly strong technically, but they don't always treat education and knowledge preservation as mission-critical priorities.

That's a gap we help solve.

The direction that matters most on a technical shoot doesn't happen on the day.

We were casting for a project involving critical infrastructure. Between the two people we brought in: steel operations, municipal water systems, construction, environmental field work. Decades of it, combined.

When we put them in front of this infrastructure, neither needed to be told what the environment felt like. They already knew. That decision was made before we ever arrived on location.

Technical industry video doesn't get evaluated the way a brand film does. People who've spent time in those environments can tell when the subject doesn't belong there.

They don't always say it out loud. The frame just stops working before the script even gets a chance.

The way someone carries themselves on an active site, how they move around equipment, how they interact with the space, that takes years to develop. You can't brief that in a green room thirty minutes before rolling.

A lot of times, the most important production decision isn't about lighting or camera angles. It's about who you put in front of the lens and whether their experience shows up authentically on screen.

That's what makes the difference between content that looks right and content that actually connects with the people who know that world.

Two hours of setup. One hour of interview.

We were on a gravel boat ramp in the eastern Arkansas Delta, filming with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists for a documentary on the northern snakehead invasion.

Two cameras. Full lighting package. Diffusion adjusted for overcast conditions.

The goal was straightforward: capture the interview where the problem actually exists, not in some sterile conference room.

So we built the entire production before the interview started. By the time the biologist sat down to talk, the lights, cameras, and crew were already positioned and working around him instead of interrupting his flow.

That's the part audiences never see when they watch the final piece.

The clean, professional interview they see on screen is never the same as the production you built to capture it. The setup determines whether the content feels real or staged.

And in documentary work, that difference matters.

I've worked with enough aerospace and defense companies to know this: technical viewers are different.

Operators, procurement leads, engineers. They've toured facilities like yours. They've read the specs. They understand the scale.

When the frame doesn't match what they know, something slips before a single line of your script gets a chance to land.

The usual culprit is distance. Shoot too close with a wide lens and the facility compresses wrong. Something that dominates a regional skyline suddenly reads like a backdrop. Your subject stops looking like they belong there.

Technically literate viewers clock this faster than any message can recover from.

At the end of the day, camera position relative to the environment is what earns that audience's trust, or loses it before you've said anything.

When you're producing content for technical industries, these details matter.

The land has been in one family since 1833.

There's still a headstone standing in the trees where the first owner is buried. The property sat untouched for years - overgrowth, timber, waterways, history nobody had touched in a long time.

Melvin Giddin aka Ol' Spice (Phifthelement) is working to reclaim every acre of it. Not as a restoration project. As something that belongs to his family, and always has.

EVP was there the day before the clearing crews moved in. Rained the entire day. 5am call time, East Texas in May. We documented the land as it was headstones, overgrowth, the property before it changed.

That footage is now the opening chapter of Reclamation, a mini-documentary following the story of Legacy Grove Estate.

There is a fish in Arkansas that breathes air.

It can survive out of water for short periods and walk across wet ground. It has been spreading through Arkansas waterways since 2008.

If you catch one, state law requires you to kill it on sight. There is no active program to remove it.

We first heard about it through research for a documentary we are currently developing. The more we dug in, the more we realized the story was bigger than the fish itself.

So we spent two days on the lower Little Red River with a local guide who has fished those stretches for years, learning the water and the terrain before we bring a full crew out.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is involved. More details on that soon.

Pre-production on something like this is not optional. You do not just show up with cameras. You learn the water first.
