Greek American: Nick Calathes suits up for Team Greece in the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬.An 𝐍𝐁𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐭 & 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝 for Panathinaikos BC Athens. Calathes has quite the resume of Basketball awards and looks to add an Olympic medal to his honors. The 6-6 flashy Point guard nicknamed “Nick The Quick” has amazed fans at 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 playing for University of Florida, The Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, and numerous Euroleague teams Calathes just signed with 𝐀𝐒 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐨. Bravo we are very proud to cheer on this 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤-𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧!

Harry Agganis “The Golden Greek” The greatest dual sport athlete of all time. This week Greek American Sports has honored the eternal memory of the Golden Greek Harry Agganis. For a glorious decade, from 1945-55, Harry Agganis ruled sports headlines across New England, and the United States. He was the most celebrated school boy athlete in the nation, a three sports high school star at Lynn Classical High School. Agganis dubbed by the media “The Golden Greek” would lead Classical to the 1946 mythical National High School Football Championship over Granby High School of Virginia 21-20, in front of 25,000 fans in Miami’s Orange Bowl. Harry turned down offers from more than seventy-five colleges to attend Boston University to be near his widowed mother.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐡 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐟𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫! 🏈Upon graduating from Syracuse University in 2017, Mariah Janos quickly launched herself into the world of sports broadcasting, serving as a sideline reporter in the Cape Cod Baseball League which features the top prospects in the NCAA. From there, Mariah’s career has taken her all over the country. First, she went North to Minnesota, covering the 𝐕𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬. Then she went East, returning to her home city of Boston to cover the 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐬, 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐬 for a digital sports network while also covering collegiate and professional Lacrosse. Her talents then led her South to Florida to work in sports betting and doing various sideline reporting jobs. Now, Mariah is 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐬, getting to experience every major sporting event in town – most notably Super Bowl LVIII. Simply Marvelous Mariah! While the ever-evolving sports scene in Vegas was a major draw, another factor in Mariah’s move to Sin City was the opportunity 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 ‘𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐝𝐝𝐬.’ The show is primarily focused on the NFL season, airing weekly on over 100 stations across the country including the YES Network in New York. You may be wondering where this passion for sports came from? Growing up in the 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚, Mariah was born into the diehard fandom of New England teams. ☘️ At a young age, Mariah started playing sports herself, being a part of the GOYA basketball team for the St. Demetrios Church in Weston, MA where she and her family are members. 𝗕𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘅 star Harry Agganis on today’s date June 6, 1954 had a 1 p.m. game at Fenway Park interestingly enough his graduation from 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 was scheduled for 4 p.m on the same day! Located at the old Braves Field, which was owned by Boston University. Harry would be pure Hollywood that day, with the game tied 4 to 4 against the Detroit Tigers, Harry would hit a dramatic 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧. At the end of the game Harry dashed into the locker room for a quick shower, and changed into his 𝐜𝐚𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐰𝐧. He took a “ribbing” from his teammate Del Wilbur,“ It’s the first time anyone ever hit a home run at Fenway Park and had to go to Braves field to celebrate.” Harry ran a mile up Commonwealth Avenue to make the graduation at Boston University! 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 - Agganis The Golden Greek: “Excellence To The End” out now available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and Roku. At 𝐎𝐡𝐢𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞, The Star Shooter from Cyprus continues to Aim High.

𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐬 from Limassol, Cyprus, a Division 1 athlete at The Ohio State University on the pistol team, continues to set her sights on greatness. Graduating next year in 2025, Charalampous has already distinguished herself as a formidable competitor in collegiate shooting sports. She is a two-time collegiate champion, having secured titles in both 2023 and 2024.

Her accolades extend beyond national boundaries; 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐬 was named to the first 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 team for air pistol last year and this year made the second 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 team for both air pistol and sport pistol. Since 2017, she has also been a stalwart on the national team of Cyprus, representing her country at prestigious international events such as the European Championship, World Cups, Commonwealth Games, and Mediterranean Games.

With such a remarkable track record, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐬 continues to be a shining example of excellence and dedication, embodying the spirit of Ohio State’s athletic program. Μπράβο Παναγιώτα 👏

Sebastian “The Greek” Delasoudas, a towering 6-foot-2, 300-pound center from New Jersey, embodies the spirit of a Spartan warrior on the gridiron. Known for his relentless drive and leadership, Delasoudas has been a cornerstone for the University of Rhode Island’s offensive line. He earned All-CAA Football Honorable Mention honors, an invitation to the prestigious Trillion Tropical Bowl, and a spot on the Phil Steele All-CAA Football Fifth Team. Elected as team captain for the fourth consecutive year by his peers, Delasoudas’ influence both on and off the field has been immeasurable.

Delasoudas’ consistency and durability were on full display as he started all 11 games at center, extending his streak to 36 consecutive starts. His prowess in anchoring the offensive line was instrumental in allowing Ja’Den McKenzie to break a nearly 70-year-old school record with 13 rushing touchdowns. Under his leadership, the Rams finished 10th in the nation in passing offense, averaging 284.8 yards per game. As Delasoudas prepares to showcase his talents at the New York Jets NFL Camp, his legacy at URI as a dedicated leader and formidable center remains firmly cemented.

However, he declined the offer to remain near his beloved widowed mother, Georgia, and opted to play for his hometown team, the Boston Red Sox. Niko Kavadas, a standout prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization, boasts an impressive baseball resume. In the 2022 season, Kavadas was named minor league player of the year with 26 home runs, 86 RBIs, and a .990 OPS, showcasing his ability to deliver clutch performances. Before turning pro, Kavadas excelled at Notre Dame, where he earned multiple accolades including 2021 D1 Baseball First Team All-American and First Team All-ACC.
Studying Business at Notre Dame, this Indiana native brings both athletic prowess and academic dedication to his career. Now with the Red Sox, fans eagerly anticipate Kavadas’s development in Major League Baseball, where his skills are set to make a significant impact on the field.

The first Olympic Flame for the Paris 2024 Olympic Flame Torch Run was lit by the sun's (Helios) rays on April 16, 2024, during a sacred ceremony in the sanctuary of Olympia where the ancient Olympic Games took place.

The Olympic Flame traveled across Greece with different torchbearers winding up in Athens beautiful first (1896) Olympic Stadium Kallimarmaros on April 26. The flame then boarded in Athens on the Belem Ship and crossed the Mediterranean Sea to the beautiful city of Marseille, France. The flame will be carried by torchbearers along a 5,000-kilometers route until Paris, France.

𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐮 has had a good career in the National Hockey League. The talented forward has played for four teams in his career the Detroit Redwings, The Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, and currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. Athanasiou has been injured since November 9, 2023, when he suffered an injury from an awkward fall against Tampa. He recently returned to the ice and started to show his speed level and skill. Athanasiou 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 a goal on April 6, that helped the Chicago Blackhawks beat The Dallas Stars 3-2.

Athanasiou in his career has played in 𝟒𝟖𝟑 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬, has scored 𝟏𝟐𝟔 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬, assisted 𝟏𝟏𝟖 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, and has a total of 244 points. The 6’2 190 lb Athanasiou was drafted in the 4th round by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2012 draft.

AHEPAN Craig Theros of Michigan ran the 𝟏𝟐𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧 in effort to raise funds for the Journey to Greece Program. Theros honored legendary 1946 Boston Marathon 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐬 𝐊𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 by Sporting a Greek Flag patch with Kyriakides name and number 77.

The Kyriakides story was written by Greek Americans Nick Tsiotos and Andy Dabilis. Kyriakides ran for the people of Greece in times of war and famine winning the Boston Marathon overcoming tremendous hardship leaving a lasting Legacy & 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 a nation.

Apostolos Roumoglou clinched his second championship with the 𝐔𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍 Huskies D1 NCAA team during March Madness. Originally from Greece, this young talent made waves as a standout for the PAOK basketball club and the Greek national team. Standing at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches, Roumoglou exemplifies a player with big dreams and even bigger potential. Συγχαρητήρια Λεβέντη 👏 __

Elle Papahronis, with an illustrious high school basketball career, is set to elevate her game to the Division 1 level at USF. Boasting an impressive resume, Elle is primed to make waves in college basketball. Her achievements include being a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, earning three Conference First Team selections, and clinching the MVP title at the Oklahoma State Tournament Championship. Notably, she was also nominated for the McDonald’s All American team. Elle comes from a basketball-oriented family; her sister Toni is a standout guard playing Division 1 hoops for Navy, while her father Pete is a legendary figure in European basketball, having secured a PAOK Championship in the Greek Euro-League. With this pedigree and talent, Elle Papahronis is poised to leave a significant mark on the court at USF and beyond.

𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬 is a D1 Star for RIT Men’s Ice Hockey. The Greek-Canadian earned All American honors. In addition he earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team honors respectively. At 6-1 200 pounds Dimitri is a 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧. Scoring 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists.) Dimitri recorded 71* blocked shots.

The UConn Huskies defeated the Stetson Hatters 91-52 in their first round game. 𝐀𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐮 a 6’ 8” sophomore guard from Xanthi, Greece scored 4 points at the end of the game with a nice left hand drive and 2 free throws. UConn is defending NCAA Champion. 𝐀𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐬 was a Star for PAOK and will shine in College Hoops.

Chicago Hometown Hero 𝗦𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀 Shines Bright for Loyola.

A native of Skokie, Illinois, 𝗦𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀, a graduate student, has proven to be a force to reckon with on the basketball court. “Αστέρι στο μπάσκετ.” A 5-8 guard, Galanopoulos has showcased her exceptional skills, leaving spectators in awe with her performances.
Having started all 30 games of the season, Galanopoulos has been a pivotal player for her team. Sam has made a significant impact, averaging 9.4 points per game, making her the third-highest scorer on the team.

Galvanizing her team’s offense, 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀 boasts an impressive shooting percentage, with 40.1 percent from the field, 29 percent from beyond the arc, and 74.5 percent at the free-throw line. Her versatility extends beyond scoring, as she contributes 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, showcasing her all-around capabilities on the court.
Throughout the season, Galanopoulos has consistently stepped up when her team needed her most. She scored double figures in 14 games, including a remarkable five-game streak. Notable highlights include a stellar performance against Duquesne, where she notched a season-high 20 points, along with six assists and four rebounds.

Furthermore, 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀 has demonstrated her ability to excel in various aspects of the game, whether it’s scoring, rebounding, or facilitating plays. Her dedication and determination have been evident, as seen in her season-best performances, such as grabbing nine rebounds against Fordham and dishing out seven assists against Milwaukee.
As the season progresses, Sam Galanopoulos continues to be a driving force for her team, exemplifying resilience, skill, and leadership on the court. With her unwavering commitment, she undoubtedly remains a player to watch out for in the collegiate basketball scene.Sam a Business student is very proud of her Greek heritage. Living near Chicago’s Greektown Sam is immersed in the culture.Fun fact she even played for Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church league team respectively.Μπράβο!

The University of California Women’s basketball team has three Greeks competing in D1 Hoops. The “U of C” Berkeley squad features Ioanna Krimili, Ornela Muca, and Anastasia Drosouni.

𝐈𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢, a 5-10 versatile guard graduate transfer 2023-2024, has been tremendous for the University of California Golden Bears. Ioanna is a native from Crete, Greece and a tremendous scorer who plays every possession with high intensity. An interesting statistic this season: loanna scored exactly 21 points, four times vs Oregon, USC, WSU, and Washington. Her hoop career biography is quite impressive. loanna was outstanding as an undergraduate player at the University of SanFrancisco. She started in all 32 games last season averaging a team high 16 points per game. The 4th highest in the WCC conference, playing 31.6 minutes a game.
Shooting lights out from the 3- point line making 84 three pointers for the season. In addition, Krimili earned All- WCC First Team honors for three consecutive seasons. loanna led the WCC in scoring her first two seasons averaging 18.9 PPG and
19.4 PPG as a sophomore. She has a lot of records at USF.

𝐎𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐜𝐚 is a 5-7 extremely skilled Guard for the Golden Bears. The Athens, Greece native well known for her strong hustle on the court. Scored a season high 11 points vs Colorado on Jan. 15 going 4-5 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the arc. Ornela has a great shooting touch. She helped Panathinaikos to a first place finish in the Under 18 championship of Athens & a second place result in U-18 Championship of Greece.

𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐢 a talented Guard stands 5-11. Anastasia a first year Freshman is well deserving of her roster spot. The Thessaloniki, Greece native was a standout in the Euroleague. Playing for Aris Thessaloniki womens basketball club in the A2 division. Where she averaged 11.9 points, 5.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in 2023.

Kristen Lappas Dinallo just released the new film that she directed on NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s life. The documentary Giannis: The Marvelous Journey premiered last week on Amazon Prime. Lappas captured the true story of the immigrant Antetokounmpo family their struggles, hard work, and their success. Kristen focused on the sacrifices that Gianni's father and mother made for their four sons emigrating from Nigeria to Greece.

𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐬 𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬 𝐚 𝐃𝟏 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤-𝐨𝐧 has been a tremendous player for Vanderbilt University. The 6-8 versatile forward from Athens, Greece has been a standout player in D1 hoops as an undergraduate at South Dakota and as a graduate student this 2023-24 at Vanderbilt. Tasos scored 21 mega points for Vanderbilt on 7-8 shooting, 4-5 -3 pointers vs talented University of Southern California. Tasos recently reached a mile stone scoring his 1,000 collegiate point. Tasos totaled 989 points, 497 rebounds, 140 career assists at South Dakota. Earning All-Summit League Honorable Mention as a junior and senior. Tasos shot 40.1 percent (57-of-142) from three-point distance as a senior. In total he averaged a very respectable 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists as a senior.

Tasos has quite the basketball resume on his B-Ball journey. As GAS researched his career we find him excelling at all levels. Playing in the Euro League he averaged 15.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for A.E.O Proteas Voulas in the A Eskana League in Greece – shooting 58 percent from the field in the league. He also played in the 2018 U18 FIBA European Championship for Greece. Tasos has truly excelled in athletics and education. Graduating from South Dakota University in 2023 earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business studies. Currently as a graduate student at Vanderbilt Tasos is pursuing Human Development Studies. GAS wishes Tasos Kamateros the Best of Luck in his future
