《白木耳》是? Each cover of White Fungus is derived from a scan of the can.

Founded by brothers Ron and Mark Hanson in 2004, White Fungus began as a quasi political manifesto, with copies of the first issue produced on a photocopier, wrapped in Christmas paper, and hurled anonymously through the entrances of businesses throughout the city of Wellington. Now a magazine featuring interviews, writing on art, new music, history and politics, White Fungus takes a dialogical ap

proach to the work it covers. The name of the publication comes from a can of white fungus drink that the Hansons found in their local supermarket in the industrial zone of Taichung. White Fungus has held interdisciplinary art events at galleries including P.P.O.W (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, ARTSPACE (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington). The publication is held in library collections including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The New York Public Library (Art & Architecture Collection), Taipei Fine Art Museum, The Southbank Centre (London), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, National Library of Australia and Te Papa (National Museum of New Zealand). White Fungus was part of the exhibition Millennium Magazines at Museum of Modern Art (February 20-May 18, 2012). The exhibition was a survey of magazines made by contemporary artists since 2000.

Robert Ashley is widely considered one of the great American composers of the post-Cage generation. Ashley created radical new forms of opera, incorporating electronic music and pioneering the use of opera in television. His multimedia projects expanded upon the form in surprising, often perplexing ways.

In 2013, Kurt Gottschalk spoke to Ashley for a major feature in the 13th issue of White Fungus. At the time, Ashley was working on his opera Quicksand, which he completed before his passing in March 2014. The article can now be read online.

Roger Boyce explores through lucid, evocative prose the photographic still lifes of New Zealand artist Fiona Pardington. Casting an eye back across the history of painting, Boyce addresses the rich pathos of Pardington’s photography and its visually arresting forms. He describes in them an audacious “through a glass darkly” veneration of things and their inviolable circumstance, an amor fati.

In 2020, White Fungus editor Ron Hanson wrote a major profile of Yao Jui-Chung 姚瑞中 that was to be published in a new online Japanese publication we'd been commissioned to create by a Tokyo art collector. As the project collapsed due to a dispute over the name, this profile has been sitting in our archives for four years. It's finally been published.

Yao Jui-Chung is one of Taiwan’s most prolific and esteemed contemporary artists. In 2020, White Fungus editor Ron Hanson interviewed Yao for a major profile on the occasion of the artist’s mid-career retrospective, Republic of Cynic, at C-LAB in Taipei. The feature was to be published in a new ...

Sydney noise musician Lucas Abela, AKA Justice Yeldham, is one of the avant-garde's most electrifying performers. Playing music by orally manipulating mic'd-up shards of glass, he employs a range of unusual vocal and rhythmic techniques. His performances can be extreme, even bloody, but are also notable for the rich diversity of sounds he achieves through this rudimentary instrument.

In the wake of the Covid pandemic, bats have once again been unfairly maligned. As the go-to scapegoat of choice for many, some even called for the mammals’ eradication. In “Batlove Redux”, Tessa Laird, author of the book Bat, part of Reaktion’s much-loved Animal series, mounts an impassioned defense of these marvelous creatures.

Laird celebrates bats, recalling art and literature inspired by the mammals, while raising the alarm over their plight amidst a warming planet. She recalls her own heartbreaking experiences volunteering to rescue flying-foxes during forest fires at Yarra Bend Park in Australia. This article was first published in the 17th print issue of White Fungus. You can now read it online.

Wang Fujui is one of the pioneers of Taiwanese noise, sound, and media art. In 1993, Wang began NOISE, the first label and zine in Taiwan dedicated to noise music, connecting artists from around the world to the island's then nascent experimental music scene. He would go on to become one of Taiwan's leading experimental musicians and sound artists. In 2014, Alistair Noble interviewed Wang for the 14th issue of White Fungus. The interview is now online.

In the realms of Taiwanese noise, sound, and media art, no figure is more influential than Wang Fujui. As an artist, publisher, curator, and organizer, Wang’s contribution to establishing these fields in Taiwan has been indispensable. In 2014, Alistair Noble interviewed Wang about his artistic tra...

In 2010, White Fungus held its first event in Taiwan at Taipei Contemporary Art Center 台北當代藝術中心, not long after it opened in Ximending. Here's a performance by Dino (廖銘和) from that night. It was shot on video and has been sitting in our archives all this time. Dino returns later in the night to perform an improvised second set along with Li Jiun=Yang (李俊陽)which ended when he blew the PA.

Our Story

White Fungus is an art magazine based in Taiwan. The publication began in 2004 as a quasi political manifesto protesting the building of an inner-city motorway in Wellington, New Zealand. Copies of the first issue were printed on a photocopier, wrapped in Christmas paper and hurled anonymously through the entrances of businesses throughout the city.

In 2009 the publication's founders, Ron and Mark Hanson, relocated to Taiwan. White Fungus is now a print magazine featuring in-depth interviews and articles on art, music, history and politics. The name of the publication comes from a can of “white fungus” the Hansons discovered in their local supermarket in Taiwan. Each cover of White Fungus is derived from a scan of the can.

White Fungus has held interdisciplinary art events at galleries and venues including P.P.O.W (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, ARTSPACE (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington).
