Congratulations to the Spring 2024 Flash Fiction Contest Winners! Literary agent Emily Williamson, the final judge, had this to say about the top three:

"What I loved about these three was the whimsy blended with grief or longing or hurt. And there was some healing there too, or at least the promise of change (an explosive one in “Burning”), be it through process or catharsis. I was impressed with the way each author used something familiar and concrete (a visit to the doctor, a pan, a stove) to build a world both past and present, and to dive into the things unseen. And each story had a clear arc that was wrapped up well at the end—something tricky to do in 750 words!"

Dialogue is action. It moves the story forward and demonstrates conflict, the heart of every scene. Besides, external dialogue, a character’s speech to at least one other person, and internal dialogue, a character’s thoughts, reveal personalities and relationships more efficiently and convincingly than any narrated passage. Taking an experience and condensing it into under 1,000 words can be challenging. Taking a life-changing event—such as an experienced trauma—and condensing that into under 1,000 words can at times feel impossible.

But trauma events are the perfect experiences to use in a flash piece because they are such huge, highly emotional moments that fitting those big EVENTS into tiny narratives is what can make for amazing writing.

Writer and editor Chelsey Clammer is offering a class that explores flash trauma narratives and invites participants to write about their own trauma—however they define that.
