The Grassroots Relief for Main Streets is an expansion of the District Impact Study published by the Central Square Business Improvement District (BID), which also includes data from East Cambridge and Union Square. The surveys work to assess the damages done to the neighborhood businesses by the outbreak of COVID-19 and to push the state to consider a set of recommended relief measures for small businesses.

Cambridge resident and muralist Caleb Neelon’s most recent work, “The Teachers’ Home,” located behind the H Mart in Central Square, is a “love letter to [his] hometown,” he says. Through this mural, Neelon says he wanted to thank the women in the city who raised him.

Lamplighter Brewing Company has had to make adjustments, says director of marketing Emma Arnold. The brewery now operates a retail window, where passerbys can purchase packaged beers and Pepita coffee. Customers can also request curbside delivery, an option that allows them to stay in their cars.

But the shift in business models has been a difficult transition for most breweries, she says.

“Everything has changed so much,” says Arnold. “The business that we’re operating this week is completely different from the business we were operating three weeks ago."

Scout is in trouble, and we want to continue doing the important work of documenting the community, but we need your help. If you are able to give us the gift of a donation, we would love to return the favor with a family photo.

Inspired by Needham-based photographer Cara Soulia, Scout Somerville staff photographer Adrianne Mathiowetz asked to bring the “Front Steps Project” to Somerville and Cambridge in an effort to raise funds for Scout Magazines. Two other photographers, Amanda Macchia and Scout Cambridge staff photographer Sasha Pedro, graciously hopped on immediately.

The Front Steps Project is a way of fostering connection, documenting the people of the community during this time of separation, and raising awareness for Scout’s fundraising efforts—all from the safety of home.

Gov. Charlie Baker ordered the Department of Public Health to issue a statewide stay-at-home advisory, effective from noon on March 24 through April 7. Furthermore, all “non-essential” businesses will be closed during this time.

“What this means is that everyone can still buy food at the grocery store, get what they need at the pharmacy and, of course, take a walk around the block or at the park,” Baker said at a press conference.

We have a complete list of all essential services that will remain open during this time.

23/03/2020

Staying open for take-out and delivery to generate some level of income is the best hope for many locally owned restaurants even while their seats remain empty. While many businesses already had such services available, that’s not true across the board. But facing indefinite closure, a large number of eateries are scrambling to set up these services at the last minute.

Grendel’s Den, a bar popular with Harvard students and faculty, has had to temporarily shut its doors, with the intention of reopening once take-out and delivery is figured out. In a press release, Grendel’s co-owner Kari Kuelzer stated, “The trials of this situation lie far outside the normal struggles of small restaurant ownership… We are in uncharted territory, but committed to working on solutions to an unprecedented problem.”

If you’re a music lover in the Cambridge area, then you’re probably familiar with the nonprofit Passim in some capacity—whether it’s their live shows at Club Passim, their music school, or their local festivals. But now they’re trying something completely new: the virtual Keep Your Distance Festival, featuring artists like Mark Erelli and Stephen Kellogg, among others.

Passim decided to close and cancel all shows through April 6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision, though necessary, has already had a significant impact on the local musicians who rely on the income from gigs and music lessons held at the venue.

Keep Your Distance Festival is a way for these artists to practice social distancing while also performing in their at-home videos posted to the event playlist on Youtube. The hope for the festival is to promote these artists and bring awareness to the Passim Emergency Artist Relief (PEAR) Fund.

The fight isn’t over yet! For Scout to remain open past this week, we need to raise a total of $5,000. This will pay staff and keep the websites online. We’ve been operating on a thin margin for a while, but this has turned into a make-it-or-break-it moment for us.

As of this morning, we have raised $1,320 towards our $5,000 fundraising goal! We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of our donors—each one of you is directly helping to keep a local publication alive.

We desperately need your help. In order for us to keep this barebones operation going—and by that we mean, literally just paying our writers—we are calling on you, if you have the means, to donate what you can. Otherwise, Scout is at risk of shutting its doors for good.

Our immediate need is $5,000. This will pay writers for the work they have done so far, and through the end of the month. Any additional funds will be put towards continuing to run the magazines—which, similar to nearly all local media sources, usually survive on a very thin margin—in the future. This would pay our designer, as well as photographers. It will keep our websites turned on.

You can hear in his voice just how much the COVID-19 pandemic is wearing on 1369 Coffeehouse owner Josh Ge**er.

“It’s been a week, for sure,” says Ge**er, who was driving around delivering growlers and bulk coffee orders on a wet Thursday afternoon. “It’s been difficult. One of the things that has been hardest about it, which is in some ways over, was it seemed like it changed day by day. At first we thought we could be open limited hours … but within a day or two it was clear that wouldn’t work.

“And so, we decided to close.”

That was this past Monday, and Ge**er—who doesn’t remember having to lay off a single person in the 27 years since he opened the business—had to let go his entire staff of more than 30 people.

What can you do to help local business while staying safe at home?

Scout caught up with Theodora Skedas, the executive director of the small business boosting nonprofit Cambridge Local First, and Aaron Cohen, owner of Gracie’s Ice Cream in Somerville, to discuss how people can help local businesses during a time of social distancing.

Buy merchandise or other items sold online. “I think that actually a better way to help businesses immediately is to buy t-shirts, sweatshirts, or other merchandise that they have,” Cohen says. He advises—if possible—buying merchandise over gift cards because “gift card purchases are not technically cash you can use right away. … But if you buy a t-shirt, then that money goes right to the business.” Skedas echoes that statement, but says that any consumption is recommended, “whether that be virtual takeout, gift cards, or online merchandise consumption.”
