BTS has just made history in Japan!
-
Earlier this year, the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) implemented a new certification system for online streaming of songs, as an addition to its pre-existing certification systems for physical album shipments and digital download sales. According to the new system, songs are certified silver once they reach 30 million streams, gold at 50 million streams, and platinum at 100 million streams.
In its latest batch of certifications (dated November 2020), the RIAJ officially awarded BTS’s smash hit “Dynamite” a platinum certification in the streaming category after the song surpassed over 100 million streams in just three months. Although BTS has previously received platinum certifications from the RIAJ for physical albums, this latest achievement marks the first time that one of their songs has been certified platinum for streaming.
Additionally, “Dynamite” is now the first song by any foreign group in RIAJ history ever to receive a platinum certification for streaming—and only the second overall song by a foreign artist, following Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” (which went platinum last month).
BTS also racked up two gold certifications for “DNA” and “Stay Gold,” each of which surpassed 50 million streams, as well as a silver certification for “Your Eyes Tell,” a Japanese song that was co-composed by Jungkook.

BTS continues their success on Billboard’s charts with their hit track “Dynamite” and latest album “BE”!
-
“Dynamite” rises on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart for the week ending December 19, achieving a peak of No. 5 that sets a new record for all-South Korean acts on the chart!
The ranking measures total weekly plays on approximately 160 mainstream Top 40 radio stations, and back in November BTS first broke the No. 10 record set by PSY’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012. They’re now the first all-South Korean act to grab a spot in the Top 5.
On the Hot 100 for this week, “Dynamite” is No. 24 as it spends its 16th week on the chart. The title track “Life Goes On” from “BE” is No. 93 in its third week on the chart.
“Dynamite” also spends a second week at No. 10 on the Radio Songs chart, extending their record as the first all-South Korean act to land a spot in the chart’s Top 10.
“Life Goes On” holds the top spot on the Digital Song Sales chart for the third week, while “Dynamite” rises up to No. 2.
“Dynamite” is No. 3 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart while “Life Goes On” is No. 18. On the Global 200 chart, “Dynamite” is No. 5 and “Life Goes On” is No. 41.
“BE” is No. 18 in its third week on the the Billboard 200 and holds No. 1 on the World Albums chart. It takes No. 7 on the Top Album Sales chart.
BTS also remains at No. 1 on the Artist 100, in their 15th non-consecutive week at the top. They continue to reign on the Social 50 chart in their 209th non-consecutive week in the top spot, extending their own record for the most weeks at No. 1 of any artist.
Congratulations to BTS!

For her recent pictorial with Elle, Jisoo modeled a variety of outfits from an adorable yellow dress to more casual streetwear.
In the interview that followed the photo shoot, Jisoo shared that she always felt the strength of fashion as an artist. She explained, “The choreography, makeup, hairstyles, and fashion styles that suit the song all have to be harmonious to better deliver the strength of the song. I think that’s when the individual charm each member possess becomes stronger.”
Jisoo also touched upon her group’s recent documentary “BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky,” which was released via Netflix in October. She shared, “Although it has only been four years since we debuted, I’ve been running towards one goal for nearly 10 years if you add the years I spent as a trainee. It was a good opportunity to look back on what dreams we’ve had while running all the way here.” She added, “Our path towards our goal won’t always be smooth, but if it’s something we have to face on the way, I tend not to be afraid of it.”
Jisoo’s full pictorial and interview will be available through the January issue of Elle.

BLACKPINK is the only Korean artist on Billboard’s staff-curated list of the 25 best music videos of 2020!
-
Coming in at No. 20 on the list was BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” dance performance video, which currently has over 460 million views on YouTube. Unlike BLACKPINK’s usual music videos, which are known for their elaborate sets, costumes, and props, the dance performance highlights the group’s moves in front of a solid pink backdrop.
Billboard’s Nolan Feeney writes, “K-pop labels have budgets akin to a small nation’s GDP, but strip away the bells and whistles and capybaras of [BLACKPINK]’s usual event-level videos and you’ll still find something endlessly watchable (and meme-able): four pros who treat every single second as a battle for your attention, with enough body rolls and synchronized hair flips to qualify for an Olympic sport.”
BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” recently won Best Performance (Female Group) at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards and Best Dance (Female) at the Melon Music Awards 2020.

BTS' stylists are under fire for their 'Time' magazine cover outfits.
-
BTS recently took the cover of 'Time' as the 'Entertainer of the Year,' and according to some netizens, the Big Hit Entertainment group's stylists didn't pay attention to the details of their outfits. As it's known as a huge achievement to land on the cover of the magazine, netizens are now calling out their stylists for not considering the importance of that achievement.
Both international and Korean netizens are noting a few alleged bad style choices, including Jin's supposedly ill-fitting suit, Jimin's shoes that are too large, SUGA's pants that aren't hemmed at the bottom, and V's too-big shoes.
Fans also commented, "If you don't have the skill, leave it to other designers. You can't help but compare this to the stylists of other companies. At the very least, take care of the clothing. It looks wrinkled," and "I hope you listen to Jin's wish to wear clothes that fit his frame better. Isn't it the most professional thing to do to take into account the artist's body frame and personal preference?"

BLACKPINK scored two spots on the list, with their Selena Gomez collaboration “Ice Cream” coming in at No. 74 and “How You Like That” coming in at No. 23.

BTS’s “Dynamite” comes in at No. 7 list on the list, with Billboard mentioning its record as BTS’s first No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 and earning the group their first Grammys nomination. BLACKPINK's first full-length studio album 'The Album' placed its name on the list of Billboard's 'The 50 Best Albums of 2020: Staff Picks'.
-
Billboard, the U.S. music media outlet, released 'The 50 Best Albums of 2020: Staff Picks' on December 7th in which BLACKPINK's first full-length album ranked 25th place, which is the highest rank among K-Pop albums so far.
Billboard praised 'The Album' as they said the title was fitting for the girl group's first album. They stated " Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé offer up eight thrilling doses of grade-A K-pop perfection, from the hip-hop swagger of thunderous lead single “How You Like That” to the infectious shout-along dance-pop of “Lovesick Girls."
The article continued to praise the album by saying "The Album not only builds on the foursome’s string of hits since their 2016 debut, but it also provides the perfect entry point for soon-to-be Blinks to embrace the girls as they continue their meteoric rise."
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK has gained an unrivaled position in the global music market with their vigorous activities this year. Starting from the release of their new song "Sour Candy", a collaboration with the pop star Lady Gaga, in May followed by the release of "How You Like That" in June, "Ice Cream" in August, then 'The Album' in October, BLACKPINK has kept a busy year.
BLACKPINK wrote a new history for K-pop girl groups as each song they released received immense recognition. Among the songs released this year "How You Like That" was picked as 'Song of The Summer' in the '2020 MTV Video Music Awards' in August, while, 'The Album' ranked second place in both the U.S. Billboard 200 and U.K's Official Albums Chart for eight and seven consecutive weeks, respectively.
Thanks to this remarkable achievement, BLACKPINK is receiving spotlight from the year-end award ceremonies both in South Korea and overseas including the leading media outlets.

BTS and BLACKPINK were the only Korean artists to make Rolling Stone’s “The 50 Best Songs of 2020” list.
-
On December 7 local time, the American pop culture magazine published its annual picks for the 50 best songs of the year.
BLACKPINK came in on the list at No. 13 with “Ice Cream,” their summer collaboration with Selena Gomez that was also included in their eight-track “THE ALBUM.” Rolling Stone mentions the co-writing credit from Ariana Grande and describes it as a “power move on the American airwaves” from “the Korean girl-group queens.”
BTS’s “Dynamite” came in on the list at No. 7, their first all-English single released in August that was also included on their latest album “BE.” Rolling Stone mentions how “Dynamite” made history by giving BTS their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (also a first for an all-Korean act), and describes the single as “unmistakably the sound of BTS, tapping into the spirit of Eighties disco,” and highlights Jungkook’s opening lines (in which he name-drops the words ‘Rolling Stone’).
BTS also previously made Rolling Stone’s list of the “The 50 Best Albums of 2020” with “Map of the Soul: 7.”

BTS took home a total of eight awards, which includes the four Daesangs (Album of the Year for “Map of the Soul: 7,” Song of the Year for “Dynamite,” Worldwide Icon of the Year, and Artist of the Year) and Best Male Group, Best Performance – Male Group (“Dynamite”), Best Music Video (“Dynamite”), and the Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10. IU’s “eight,” which was produced by and features BTS’ Suga, also won Best Collaboration.
In their speech for Album of the Year, which was presented by James Corden, Jimin said, “Thank you! There are people who might not know this, but Suga is recovering from shoulder surgery. But because we’ve received such a big award, he’s made a surprise appearance tonight.”
Through a phone call on stage, Suga said, “I am watching the ceremony live. I want to say thank you to ARMY, who have given us the Album of the Year award. It’s the second year in a row that we’ve received the Album of the Year award. This is for the album that received the most love this year, right? We worked hard to prepare this album in the United States and more, so we’re grateful that it received so much love. I feel happy knowing we’ve won Album of the Year. I’m working hard on my recovery, so please don’t worry. A lot of people I know are texting me saying that they’re having fun watching MAMA, but it feels weird because I’m not there. It’s a bit embarrassing to say this, but I’m with you all in spirit. Thank you. ARMY, I love you.”
In their speech for Worldwide Icon of the Year, which was presented by Park Seo Joon, RM said in English, “I’m nervous. You can see I’m nervous while I’m wearing a mask. ARMY, do you hear me? First, I’d like to give a shout-out to our worldwide handsome Jin, and also, I’d like to shout-out our worldwide ARMYs. All over the world, in your room, in your house. I hope that my truth and my mind can be conveyed through this paper thing [his mask]. As we think of ‘worldwide,’ I wonder if the world is really wide. Of course it’s wide, but in the territory of music and love, the world is not that wide. It’s really small, actually. Throughout this year, thanks to your love and support, we could feel you as if you were right beside us and right in our mind. We are all connected. Our worldwide ARMYs made this award and gave it to us. I hope that you can stay safe and we can meet in person and say ‘I love you’ to each other.”
In the speech for Song of the Year, which was presented by Song Joong Ki, RM said, “MAMA is the one awards ceremony that we weren’t invited to when we made our debut. We really wanted to come here, and it was a ceremony that we felt a lot of envy for, but as time went on, we received such big awards here in succession. It is deeply moving for us. ‘Dynamite’ is a piece of luck that came our way when we were weighed down by these tragic times. We didn’t know that it would receive this much love. During these difficult times, there were times when it weighed on our minds that we were the only ones receiving such good news, and we didn’t feel comfortable with it. Whether it’s like ‘Dynamite’ or like ‘Life Goes On,’ through dance and music, could we say that we should plant our feet in the ground where we stand? Because there are so many people who cannot do the work that they used to do anymore, we wondered if we could really say something like that. In the end, we are people who dance and sing, so we feel both grateful and sorry that people accepted into their hearts our message that we should have faith in a better tomorrow. It’s sad and difficult and joyous to say this, but time will go on, tomorrow will come, and the morning will rise. Let us work hard at living and greet the new morning with a smile. Whether it’s explosive like ‘Dynamite’ or calm like ‘Life Goes On,’ we will plant both our feet in the ground and work hard as BTS. Thank you for all the love you’ve shown us.”
In their speech for Artist of the Year, which was presented by Lee Jung Jae, J-Hope said, “I’m grateful to ARMY for staying up with us so late. The weight of this award makes us realize that it is truly the end of the year. It is an honor to be able to perform every year at the end-of-year ceremonies and receive such great awards. A lot has changed in the world, but this feeling hasn’t changed. Every year, as we take another step on our path to growth, the words we say the most are: to our amazing fans. Being able to receive these awards, being able to perform here, this is all thanks to ARMY. It’s a bit awkward to say this, but the heroes of this award are the members. We were able to get through this year because of these members, and this team. I don’t know if Suga is watching this, but please get well soon and stand on stage with us soon. We shine more when you’re with us.”
Jimin added the group’s thanks for their personal staff, the staff at Big Hit Entertainment, and their families and friends. Jimin said, “Somehow a whole year has passed. We worked so hard, but it felt like it went by so fast, and sometimes so slow, that it’s hard to remember it all. I’m not sure how to think about it. It’s complicated and sad and happy and angering and there doesn’t seem to be much that was left behind, but in any case, it went by. But we held on, so I hope that next year we can return here and meet again.” V also added his special thanks for the group’s team of managers.
Congratulations to BTS!
