Nicola Maye Goldberg's "The Virgin" both stands on its own as an achingly familiar story about gender, erasure, and complicity and communes with the events chronicled in her literary thriller NOTHING CAN HURT YOU, out now from Bloomsbury, about the murder of a college student in 1997 and the people it has haunted for decades.

"Mark is on the living room floor and his wife Sheila, she’s walking all over him. It’s like he’s one of those sushi platters at Sexy Tokyo, but instead of tuna, uni, live conch, he’s a platter for her feet, which are kneading him, hard, because Sheila is bigger than her profile picture lets on." —'Agape' by Hunter Braithwaite

"Gene’s mother told him her story about the tree in her childhood backyard every time she ate persimmons. Gene nodded along every time, listening as if it were the first telling...Now Gene painted the persimmons around his mother in her room, flaming orange, glowing pumpkin, sunset bright, finally blood red. They were floating pillows; they were blooming flowers. His mother was surrounded by the fruit of her youth, her eyes hooded and aged, nothing more wrong with her than having weathered the passage of time."
–– A new story by Elaine H. Kim up on Joyland New York today about family, obligation, and the heaviness of the unknown future.

Joyland is thrilled to present this beautifully written story by Sanchari Sur "In the Face of the Beloved":

Richard was not the jealous type. Jealousy, he believed, was best left to those still struggling to come of age. At thirty-three, he liked to think of himself as evolved, his concerns lying with the effortless comfort that came with a long-term relationship. Yet one dreary afternoon in February, not long after Naveen had returned from Dubai, Richard couldn’t shake off the feeling that something had changed.

Please check out this brilliant new story by Michael V. Smith on Joyland Canada!

I met him on my first morning at a new job at Lichtman’s bookstore in Toronto. My boss, Lynn, warned me to have Mr. Weinmeier’s Sunday NY Times stored close to the door, because he didn’t like to wait. He was rich, which, apparently, made him important. Lynn walked me through how she packaged it up and wrote his name across the top of the plastic bag with a Sharpie: Weinmeier. All she told me about him was that he was a difficult, special client.
