Just to let you know that after almost 9 years of pretty much continuous weekly shows, they are being given a rest. I'm actively looking at alternative means of promoting independent music, meanwhile the SnC site is still there, along with 429 editions of the show - so plenty to listen to! As a small aside, I'm also in the process of setting up a film-making business with long time SnC studio engineer Jeremy Gugenheim. It's a welcome return for me having been involved in video production since the days of B/W reel to reel video recorders. Yes, they really did exist! Future music-oriented stuff may well connect with film. Exciting times ... still.

Concerted, and caffeine fueled, effort has resulted in a plan for The Great Escape. Well, for today anyway.
Includes some reggae :-)

It has been observed by my good chums Codger and Grumbler that my last activity on here was at TGE 2013.
Today is day 1 of TGE 2014.
Just imagine the waffly bo****ks I've save you from in the past year. ;-)

TGE Day 2 - A very civilised lunch with the delightful Aussies - thanks to Millie and the Sounds Australia team. Then music with Brisbane 10 piece beat combo Velociraptors and evidence that Brighton not only has balls but that they are glittery. Injustice & Queen, by Funke and the Two Tone Baby

What a way to spend a Friday afternoon. Funke and the Two Tone Baby came in to play a stunning Session at the Barn. A formidable talent with total commitment.
The session will be available on the SnC site next week. Hope to have some video for you too. He's playing dates in Cambridge tomorrow and Sunday, then touring the UK to promote the new album "Battles". http://funkeandthetwotonebaby.bandcamp.com/

Washed the cups, cleaned the floor, tidied enough of the desk to work on. What's going on?
A Session at the Barn recording scheduled for this afternoon. Always exciting.
Now we just need the studio engineer and a musician ;)

25/04/2013

Perhaps this is just a nod of tribute in the general direction of Rene Magritte "Ceci n'est pas un billet". Not long 'til TGE now.

Mobile devices including tablets and smartphones are increasingly being used as portable music players. 40% of tablet owners and 56% of smartphone users say they use their device for music listening. Half of smartphone users listen to music at least once a day and half report they are using the device more for music compared with a year ago. http://ow.ly/hPTNE

Social Media House: Ariel’s New Online Course for 2013 – Presale Through January 14, 2013 | CyberPR.

Every forecast suggests that social media will continue to grow in importance in 2013.
The challenge of getting your around all the applications and techniques, let alone metrics, can be daunting. This week you can jump onboard with my friend and expert SM practitioner Ariel Hyatt.
Her 9 week "Social Media House" programme looks amazing. It brings her expertise developed in the early adopting music business to a wider client base. She's offering a huge launch bargain to just 50 people but the offer closes on 14 Jan. Take a look. http://cyberprmusic.com/2013/01/09/socialmediahouse/

One of the few voices that I really trust in the music business is that of Ariel Hyatt. Ariel runs a music publicity agency in New York and puts huge amounts of energy and time into helping clients (and non-clients) achieve their dreams by reaching their audiences.
She tirelessly gives away all the secrets in straight-talking conference panels and seminars around the world. More than simply "doing" PR for musicians she develops musicians skills in managing their own on-line presence.
Now she wants to bring even more resources to a wider audience and has a Rockethub funding project to make this possible. She is offering some great incentives to investors - I've just contributed - join me and let's tap into the Ariel fountain!

Make December 12th 2012 'International Roadie Day' (check: 1-2-1-2-1-2 )

So glad to see formal recognition of the humble roadie. Inspired choice of date too.

Proud to say that's how I got into the music business.
There's still nothing quite like the smell of hot leatherette to put the spring in a chap's stride ;)

How to mark it though?

Ariel Hyatt

Ariel Hyatt knows a thing or two about how musicians can help themselves get noticed and achieve success. She has the knack of telling it like it is is a way that is also encouraging and motivating.
I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the latest edition of her Music Success in Nine Weeks even though I'm a music podcaster rather then a musician.
The lessons in previous editions have been directly applicable in so many of the activities I am involved in and I'm confident that this one will update and extend the opportunities.

I just got a free ebook from Ariel Hyatt and thought you might enjoy it. You can download it here: http://noisetrade.com/musicsuccessin9weeks

Final stages of the SnC website revamp are underway. A little iTunes strangeness may be anticipated as nuts are tightened and ni***es greased ;)

22/11/2012

Now that you're awake, even in Walla Walla, WA (probably), a very happy Thanksgiving to all our friends to the west of the Atlantic.
Your help, friendship and energy is inspiring and much appreciated.

Suffolk 'n' Cool

I hope you enjoyed the FB post showing the new site 'cos it has fallen over now :(
An innocent update to the theme sent it out of sight. The stuffs all there but invisible (I heard it talking among itself). Hopefully all will be resolved tomorrow.
The shownotes for today's edition (just released) are at http://suffolkandcool.libsyn.com/sn-c-350-more-highs-than-lows
Oh yeah, "Can't stop the music"

EDIT_HERE

21/11/2012

Well, the site seems to be getting there - a few sharp corners need of a bit of sandpaper. Now SnC 350 to prep.

21/11/2012

The new Suffolk 'n' Cool site is ready to roll but the switchover may take a little more time. If you are remotely interested I'll post progress on Facebook.
Computers eh?

14/11/2012

I'm really looking forward to being about to point you to the new website in these notes to check out the new editions of SnC.
Just trying to resolve what seems to be a perennial problem with audio players. It seems that every time the technology moves on the players are very slow to respond.
We're trying really hard to find a great HTML5 player (for all the iOS listeners) that looks good and will play nicely on all platforms, including as Flash for those that need it.
How can it really be so hard? Er, well, yes, apparently so!
Any suggestions?

Suffolk 'n' Cool

We’ve got a rather acoustic, unplugged kind of feel to a lot of the tracks this week. There’s a great mix of raw, passionate songs with some superbly executed musicianship from London, New York, LA, New South Wales, Manchester, Margate and Gardabær, Iceland.

Café Asean

Quite a deluge of showcase events, party invitations and meet-up suggestions for CMJ (Oct 16-20) this week. The panels look good too. The only thing that'll be missing is ... me :(
For one CMJ only I'm stuck in the UK this year so won't be meeting up with the music circus members who seem to spend most of their lives travelling from festival to festival. I'll not be discovering sensational music drifting out of unpromising venues in the Lower East Side and diving in for a listen, let alone the "Let's grab a quick interview outside in the rain" moments.
No late night pizza or Chinese with friends after the music stops. No "Stand clear of the closing doors please".
No exciting ideas sparking from kindred spirits about how we can nurture and enable emerging talent - 'cos that's what really matters.
But most depressingly, no meals with good friends in Greenwich Village (just love http://www.cafeasean.com/ Marc) nor the live construction of fabulous apple pies on a semi-industrial scale in Park Slope with Ariel.
Next year we'll be back to the thrill and serendipity that CMJ generates for sure but for this year, have fun my friends. I'll be trying very hard not to think of you!

How To Call Attention To Your Music - By: Derek Sivers

SnC exists largely to support independent music and musicians. That's just what we are about.
Derek Sivers (founder of CD Baby) has similar motivations, as a musician himself, he offers remarkably sound advice to help musicians help themselves.
This link is primarily for the musicians, although you might well find it both interesting (as a music lover) and potentially useful, no matter what field of endeavour you are involved in.
Some real gems in this one. Thanks Derek.

Derek Sivers shares his advice to musicians about how to call attention to their music.

Suffolk 'n' Cool : SnC 329 - Post Podcrawl

Suffolk 'n' Cool : SnC 336 - Atmospherics

It’s harvest time here in Suffolk, so the air is regularly filled with dust and the sound of agricultural machinery - sometimes way into the night. It is unfortunate that they seem to...

A Full Circle Moment: Gotye Makes His Own Tribute To Fans’ Tributes To “Somebody”

This is glorious. Gotye has rounded up his favourite covers of "Somebody That I Used To Know" and edited them together - brilliantly.

For his fans, Gotye’s YouTube mash-up made entirely from covers of his hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” is one doozy of a love letter. The Belgian-Australian artist (real name Wally De Backer) released the video via his YouTube channel this weekend. Suffolk 'n' Cool : SnC 335 - No scoffing

Music from New York rather dominates this week but Maryland and LA get looks in and we close with a spectacular track from the ever exciting Xera from Asturia on the north coast of Spain.  When you’ve finished listening, and not a minute before ;), do follow the vimeo link in the Active Child notes ...
