Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival serves as a reminder just how many outstanding "regional" bluegrass bands there are, most of whom we might never hear of. Here is a perfect example -- Bug Tussle, a band from the Binghamton, NY area. Most of their gigs are in that area, so folks like us, who live a few hours south of there, don't get an opportunity to see them except at festivals like SCJ.
Theo & Brenna Band are a brother sister duo that was a 2021 IBMA Momentum Award nominee. Here's a little bit of their music from Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival
We first saw Into The Fog at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh during IBMAs. We chose their showcase that night because Ron Kodish highly recommended them. As usual, he was spot on. A short while later they came north for a little run that included a show at Zoetropolis in Lancaster, where we were able to catch them again. It was great getting to see them for a third time at Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival. We also sat down with the fellas for a little chat. We'll be posting that to our You Tube channel when it is ready.
Tanjo & Crow was not unknown to us. Matter of fact they were one of the draws. We've been fans of Tanner Bingaman since we first saw him picking the banjo with Seldom Said No. And we have seen him solo, picking a twelve-string guitar and channeling the Bela side of his banjo brain. Also had a chance top see Tanjo and Crow in the beautiful West Shore Theater in New Cumberland. Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival promoter Ron Kodish likes to boast his festival includes all types of bluegrass, from its roots to its branches. Tanjo and Crow are way out on a limb, especially when they brought along a clarinet player. So we get it if you don't want to call this "bluegrass." Let's just call it beautiful music.
We had heard good things about Pocono Jones and the Bear but had not had a chance to see them prior to Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival. Suffice to say the Philly area duo did not disappoint.
Another very interesting band we saw for the first time at Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival was Wicked Chicken, a sort of local to SCJ band from Millheim, Pa. (Near State College). The band is led by brothers brothers Gus and Huck Tritsch. Gus is the one with the headband in the video. You may recognize him from having toured with Jake Blount. The band is not a bluegrass band, at least not by the Flatt Earth Society's standards. Huck spent much of their set on the drums. Gus picked up an electric guitar for a song or two. Their own description of their sound is "a mix of driving rock-and-roll, old-time fiddle, and blues." Most of their Pa. WIlds Stage set, though, was fiddle based, including a few tunes where the brothers did a little twin fiddling. Their set also included a few songs with Hillbilly Biscuits bass man Niko Kreider sitting in on cello (sorry, that is not in this clip).
Really enjoyed our first taste of the Joe Hillman Band on Thursday night at Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival. Based in Chester County (near Philly), Pa., they play mostly in their home area. Guess that means a road trip to Kennett Square will soon be in order. With no cell signal in the mountains, we could not stream any music from SCJ. But we saved some video clips to share. Here's some Joe Hillman Band (with Colebrook Road banjo picker Mark Rast's son, Jordan, on guitar) -
Here is a little taste of The Slocan Ramblers from last night at Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival to hold y'all until we get photos edited and posted. We apologize for the drunken war cries from the guy who didn't realize there is a reason they didn't put a microphone in the crowd for him.
