Al-Hizb al-A'zam wa 'l-Wird al-Afkham is a beautifully organized and comprehensive collection of invocations drawn from the Qur’an and Prophetic Sunna. Its wide range leaves uncovered hardly any area of worldly and otherworldly concern, and a complete reading might well put before Allah just about everything one would need in both this life and the next.

Since the publication of the original Arabic edition, public recitals (maqra’as) of the entire collection in a single sitting have been held in various cities around the world. These are usually followed by an authorisation ceremony for the attendees. It has inspired many people to become regular readers of the book.

The act of seeking forgiveness is what gives us the opening we need after feeling ­overwhelmed by the burden of sin. Forgiveness means a way out, a second chance, a feeling of hope with which to turn a new page in life. It is through the seeking of forgiveness that we begin to understand that there is no reason whatsoever to despair of the mercy of Allah.

Islam encourages us to not run away in fear of Allah but rather to turn toward Allah the same way a baby would run into its mother’s lap. So lovingly does Allah, Most High, address His sinful servants: “Say (to humanity, O Muhammad): O My servants-those (of you) who have committed (sins in great) excess against their own souls-never despair of the mercy of Allah! For, indeed, Allah forgives sins, one and all. Indeed, it is He who is the All-Forgiving, the Mercy-Giving. So turn in penitence to your Lord. And submit yourselves to Him.” (al-Qur’an 39:53)

Prayers for Forgiveness is a collection of seventy prayers for forgiveness [istighfarat] attributed to one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of the past, Hasan al-Basri, and it has been presented here to offer a way for us to navigate through the complications and pitfalls of this life.

Set out in Arabic script, with adjoining translation in English, this edition also includes transliteration of the prayers to facilitate reading for those who are not so well-versed in Arabic.

Imam Tirmidhi narrates that the Prophet ﷺ ordered people to ‘Be modest before Allah, as is His due.’ The Prophet ﷺ then explained that ‘Modesty before Allah means protecting the head and all that is in it, and protecting the stomach and all that is inside it. Furthermore, you should remember death and decay, for one whose eyes are set on the Hereafter keeps away from worldliness. One who accomplishes all of this is one who is modest before Allah, as is His due.’

This work is an elaborate commentary on the aforementioned hadith. It covers Divine and Prophetic injunctions, as well as scholarly discussions relating to a variety of subjects, such as having pure belief in Allah; the various facets of spiritual purification; how to use the bodily parts in a lawful manner; maintaining honest financial transactions; the rules of good social conduct; and the remembrance of death and rulings connected to it.

The treatise ends with a detailed outline of the substantial events heralding the End of Time and the events of the life after death: in the grave and on the Day of Judgement, and a description of the final abodes of Heaven and Hell.

Supplicating to Allah is the primary essence of worship and an integral part of every believer’s life. It is one of the most effective ways of building a strong connection with the Creator. Throughout the day, a believer should be in constant mode of asking Allah for his or her needs, whether big or small.

Supplicating to Allah can be done in one’s own words and in any language. However, the supplications/prayers (ad’iya) taught to us in the Qur’an and Sunna are unique and contain special spiritual benefits. Each supplication (du’a) holds oceans of meanings within itself. As such, one should memorise them with the translation, and form a habit to recite them at the various junctures of ones life.
Given the importance, many scholars – both in the past and present – have collected these supplications for the benefit of Muslims.

A Thinking Person's Guide to Our Times

This book takes on the task of determining the challenges and problems of the Muslim Umma in the recent past, the present and, more importantly, in the future and suggerst practical solutions for them.
Obviously, one short book can hardly address all these issues and suggest solutions without certain simplifications and potentially controversial assertions. Nevertheless, it presents a systematic analysis and suggested prognosis based on a coherent philosophy. Nothing is more needed in our times, and second to spiritual weakening, the greatest problem of all facing the Islamic World (and indeed the whole world) is lack of understanding of the true natures and essences of things.

This book is an absolute must to understand where the Muslim community is at present and what may happen in the next thirty years. The author has to be commended for compiling an astonishing amount of detail on the various related topics of the past, present and future, which perhaps only a person in his privileged position and academic insight could have provided. Rather than follow conspiracy theories that are abound on the internet and other places, this is the book to read for mind blowing detail but with sound analysis and solutions.

In recent decades many attacks have been launched against the concept of taqlid [following a school of Islamic law]. Opposition has ranged from being mild with degrees of acceptance to malicious attacks. Certain extreme elements have gone so far as to brand those who follow a madhhab [school] as mushrik [polytheist]. Much of the opposition has been a result of misunderstanding the realities of this concept.

The first part of this book seeks to clarify certain aspects of taqlid that have been misunderstood and gravely distorted. It sheds light on the necessity of taqlid, its history, and its role in today’s world.
The second part includes several chapters devoted to issues regarding salat [ritual prayer] according to the Hanafi school of law. Through illustrative examples and detailed discussions, the chapters on prayer sufficiently demonstrate the sophisticated legal philosophy employed by the Hanafi school (indeed all the madhhabs) in their derivation of legal rulings from the source texts of Islam.
