"I continue to understand response art as imagery made to hold, investigate and communicate. However, I now see its utility in addressing how we are affected by what we witness, or what I call harm's touch. This is a term I have developed to describe the potential risk and benefit of witnessing another's pain..." Barbara Fish

“Dr. Barbara Fish was one of the first professors to introduce me to this model of supervision at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago... in the days leading up to the next supervision session with Dr. Fish, I would reflect on my experiences in therapy work, and make response art to bring into session as a starting point for discussion. Dr. Fish and I then worked alongside each other to make art during supervision, and we examined the response art pieces as part of the ongoing verbal and non-verbal dialogue between supervisor and supervisee. Dr. Fish describes her use of response art as a container for difficult feelings, to empathy, and to share her experiences with others...” Lee Sze-Chin introducing Dr. Barbara Fish and art-based supervision.

“In the eight weeks of July and August, more than a thousand origami pieces were folded and selected over twelve consecutive art therapy sessions to create a collage representing volunteers from the USA, Germany, Japan, and Singapore, involved in the Miracle Kutchie Experience 3 Art Retreat, Singapore. With the help of technology and Skype, I supervised the therapeutic care of the twenty children from Fukushima with Expressive Origami Therapy, which I had formulated almost twenty years ago. It was an amazing experience for me to supervise remotely and then to meet the kids after. At the same time, I was treating myself with Expressive Origami Therapy after I underwent brain surgery in New York this year. Post-surgery was a good chance for me to execute the therapy on myself and it worked beautifully..” Toshiko Kobayashi, Supervisor at NYU Graduate Art Therapy Program for our December issue cover art.

"Finding hope for me was about reclaiming meaning in my life. My desire to help others transcended my limitation of finding employment. My work, not restricted to formal employment, could embrace freelancing, private practice and volunteer work. It inspired new workshops to facilitate hope, meaning and identity. Deconstructing hope revealed new connections, new narrative choices, and forged new hopes," Angeline Kin.
