The Astrolabe. An early instrument used to enable astronomers to calculate the position of the Sun and prominent stars.

The device dates to ancient times (200 BC). With incredible versatility the Astrolabe was used as an analog calculation device capable of working out several kinds of problems in astronomy.

The earliest known depiction of an astrolabe is a mosaic in Sicily, which may have been imported from Alexandria in Egypt. Ptolemy used an astrolabe to make the astronomical observations recorded in the Tetrabiblos.

Astrolabes continued in use in the Greek-speaking world throughout the Byzantine period.

My track “Kepler 452” is the story of interplanetary space probe “New Horizons” and its 1800 light year journey to Kepler-452b (Earth 2.). A super-Earth exoplanet!

Form the invention of an ancient analogue astronomy device to far reaching inter-stellar space exploration. Humanity’s drive to scientific and technological innovation and our infinite creativity will allow us to one day travel to dimensions and states yet unimagined.

One interesting idea about the Khmer empire is the mystery surrounding its eventual collapse. All empires fall eventually. But academics still don’t know what happened after - and for another 200 years.

Another example of how little we know- even of our own recent history.

I’ve been meaning to visit this place for years. Partly by morbid fascination but mainly for historical context. They say history rhymes.

Most of us casually observing world events today must surely feel an uneasy ill-content; like this could happen again. Maybe not at the industrial level horror of pol pot but equally as evil.

It’s good to see to remember. So we don’t forget.

Between 1975 and 1978, about 20,000 men, women, children and infants who had been detained and tortured at S-21 prison were transported to the extermination camp of Choeung Ek.

The remains of 8985 people, many of whom were bound and blindfolded, were exhumed in 1980 from mass graves in this one-time longan orchard; 43 of the 129 communal graves here have been left untouched.

Fragments of human bone and bits of cloth are scattered around the disinterred pits. More than 8000 skulls, arranged by s*x and age, are visible behind the clear glass panels of the Memorial Stupa, which was erected in 1988.

The Sacred Golden Temple. # WatPhraThatDoiSuthep

Overlooking the city from its mountain throne, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, and its founding legend is learned by every schoolkid in Chiang Mai. The wát is a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture, reached via a 306-step staircase flanked by naga (mythical sea serpents). The climb is intended to help devotees accrue Buddhist merit.

The monastery was established in 1383 by King Keu Naone to enshrine a piece of bone said to be from the shoulder of the historical Buddha. The bone shard was brought to Lanna by a wandering monk from Sukhothai and it broke into two pieces at the base of the mountain, with one piece being enshrined at Wat Suan Dok. The second fragment was mounted onto a sacred white elephant that wandered the jungle until it died, in the process selecting the spot where the monastery was later founded.

Standing in the City of Ancients.

Chiang Mai (meaning "New City" in Thai) was founded in 1296 as the new capital of Lan Na, succeeding the former capital, Chiang Rai. The city's location on the Ping River and its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historic importance

Chiang Mai succeeded Chiang Rai as the capital of Lan Na. Pha Yu enlarged and fortified the city, and built Wat Phra Singh in honor of his father Kham Fu.

The ruler was known as the chao. The city was surrounded by a moat and a defensive wall since nearby Taungoo Dynasty of the Bamar people was a constant threat, as were the armies of the Mongol Empire, which decades earlier had conquered most of Yunnan, China, and in 1292 overran the bordering Daikingdom of Chiang Hung.

Chiang Mai formally became part of the Thonburi Kingdom in 1774 by an agreement with Chao Kavila, after the Thonburi king Taksin helped drive out the Taungoo Bamar.

Subsequent Taungoo counterattack led to Chiang Mai's abandonment between 1776 and 1791.

Chiang Mai then slowly grew in cultural, trading, and economic importance to its current status as the unofficial capital of Northern Thailand.

Took this photograph tonight from my balcony just after sunset. The celestial object top center is the moon.

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System and the largest and most massive relative to its parent planet, Its gravitational influence is the main driver of Earth's tides and very slowly lengthens Earth's day.

Directly below the moon and much smaller is the planet Venus. Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is a rocky planet with a mass and size narrowly second in the Solar System to Earth, and with an atmosphere, which is the thickest of all four rocky planets of the Solar System and substantially thicker than Earth's.

In Earth's sky it is also the natural object with the third highest maximum apparent brightness, after the Sun and the Moon, due to its proximity to Earth and the Sun, its size, and its highly reflective global cloud cover.

Because of these prominent appearances in Earth's sky, Venus has been, particularly among the other four star-like classical planets, a common and important object for humans, in their cultures and astronomy.

Finally to the left and slightly lower than Venus is (the hard to see) Sirius. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. Sirius is a binary star consisting of a main-sequencestar of spectral type A0 or A1, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, termed Sirius B. The distance between the two varies between 8.2 and 31.5 astronomical units as they orbit every 50 years.
