Rest in Power Rep Sheila Jackson Lee: Fighter, Voice of the People
A strong Voice of the People has been stilled. Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of the Texas 18th Congressional District, died Friday night at the age of 74. She was known for her fight to make June 19th, or Juneteenth, a federal holiday, her tireless efforts to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and to reintroduce the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The 15-term Congresswoman announced in June she was being treated for pancreatic cancer.

Before Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, 74, disclosed her health diagnosis, she first affirmed her faith and commitment to the fight for justice and equality, which she will bring to the personal battle ahead. Jackson Lee, who serves Texas’ 18th Congressional District, revealed that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
“I am confident that my doctors have developed the best possible plan to target my specific disease. The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,” she wrote.
“To the constituents of the 18th Congressional District: Serving as your representative in Congress for 30 years is one of my greatest honors. Your hopes and aspirations inspire my efforts on behalf of our community every day. As I pursue my treatments, it is likely that I will be occasionally absent from Congress, but rest assured my office will continue to deliver the vital constituent services that you deserve and expect,” she continued.
– Vice President Kamala Harris joined Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday night for a wide-ranging conversation about her continued leadership in the fight for reproductive freedom, ongoing threats to health care, ma*****na reform, and our continued support for Ukraine against Russia’s unprovoked attack. She also spoke about immigration and outlined how the Biden-Harris Administration has delivered historic progress for families throughout America – from capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors to canceling student debt and taking on the burden of medical debt.

We’ve heard a few people can’t read the Press Room, so we are here to make sure you understand that Karine Jean-Pierre will forever be the hot topic!
In case you’ve forgotten, read the bold print below:
- She is the first Black person and openly LGBT person to serve as White House Press Secretary.
- She is a lecturer in international and public affairs at Columbia University.
- The driving force behind VP Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential campaign as her Chief of Staff.
- She’s trilingual
- And every time she steps to the podium, she shows the world full of Black children that you, too, can be the most significant voice in the White House.
Now, we hope you took notes because there will be no further questions. Thank you for coming to our press conference.

Have you got your Mother’s Day gift yet? With Mother’s Day right around the corner we know you want to get your mom something she will adore. One of the best ways to find that special person in your life the perfect gift is to think about their love language…yes love language.
The concept of love languages comes from Dr. Gary Chapman and his book The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Last. There are five love languages: acts of service, quality time, physical touch, receiving gifts, and words of affirmation.
We found the ultimate gift guide to help you find the perfect gift for your Mom, ’Mena’, godmother and special ‘auntie’ in your life.
Got more ideas, share with us what you’re getting for your mom this Mother’s Day.
She's the grandmother Juneteenth, recipient of the highest honor in the country the President Medal of Freedom and a proud Cafe Mocha 2022 HBCU Salute THEM Award honoree, we are here thanks to Ms Opal Lee who teaches us that we all can make a difference.
The stakes are high! is back and the biggest thing on his mind is protecting HBCUs and the Black vote in 2024.
Thousands of high school students received the surprise of a lifetime today when former First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance for College Signing Day in Washington D.C!
The DC College Access Program celebrated thousands of students from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia on their decision to pursue higher education. This event marks 10 years since the former First Lady launched her Reach Higher initiative in the White House to inspire students to seek higher education after high school.
This College Signing Day is even more special because it celebrates the graduating class of 2024. These students began their high school journeys at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They overcame virtual learning, missing out on special events while at the same time trying their best to stay safe.
College can be described as some of the best times of your life and we are so happy to see so many students taking this next step in their lives. Congratulations to the class of 2024, we know that you are well on your way to achieving great things.
Drop some encouraging words for our soon-to-be college goers in the comments!
Sometimes in life, it feels like we only get one chance, one shot but in the words of Oprah Winfrey, “If you are still breathing you have a second chance.”
April is Second Chance Month and as it comes to a close we wanted to celebrate some Black women who are deserving of a second chance and who are on the road to redemption. Women like Cyntoia Brown, Shanteari Weems, Danielle Metz, and Kemba Smith are examples of how the criminal justice system continues to fail Black women.
These women have proved that we are not our mistakes and that we all have the chance to change our lives for the better. We must continue to advocate for prison reform to end the mass incarceration of Black women and other people of color.
In 2021, The Sentencing Project reported that the imprisonment rate for Black women – at 62 per 100,000 – was 1.6 times the rate of imprisonment for White women.
While the overall imprisonment for Black and Latinx women has declined since 2000 and increased for White women over that same period, Black and Native American girls remain more likely to face incarceration than White, Asian, and Latinx girls.
returns to Cafe Mocha with the Legacy album, tour, and musical tribute to her father’s career as a R&B artist.
Each one of us has a mission. And thanks, to former Tuskegee University President Fredrick D. Patterson and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune we have been reaping the benefits of their mission for the last 80 years.
Before they founded the UNCF, both Patterson and McLeod Bethune had to overcome their struggles to achieve their level of success. Fredrick Patterson became an orphan at age 2 after his parents passed away from tuberculosis. He was also voted least- likely to succeed by his eighth-grade class. Mary McLeod Bethune was born to former slaves and worked for her mother’s former owner.
Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has become the nation’s largest private provider of scholarships and other forms of financial assistance for African American and other underrepresented students to achieve access to higher education.
Throughout its eight-decade history, UNCF has helped more than 500,000 students to go to and through college. We celebrate UNCF and its milestones and support its mission to create a more equitable and inclusive society. Continue to make a difference and empower the next generation of leaders.
Happy 80th Anniversary ! May you continue to honor the legacy and transform the future.
We here at Café Mocha would like to send our deepest condolences to the friends and family Grammy-winning American Idol singer Mandisa Hundley.
Hundley passed away this past Thursday at age 47.
May her soul rest in peace 🙏🏾🤍
