SURPRISES IN 2019 BENUE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTIONS
By Peter Ademu-Eteh PhD, FNIPR
The 2019 Benue governorship elections will be full of surprisess because of many reasons.
First reason is the increasing, sustained underdevelopment and poverty in Benue State since 1999. If we are sincere, Benue has not witnessed any significant infrastructural development since 1999. Neither has it experienced economic empowerment of its citizens through entrepreneurship. Even agriculture that our fathers used to pay our school fees in best available schools then has not been accorded any attention by successive state governments since 1999. The years of incompetence in Benue governance have turned the state into a den of poverty, hunger and despair. Voters definitely will break this circle by looking for a messiah with pedigree in 2019.
The second source of surprise in the 2019 Benue governorship election is the reality that zoning will not work in favour of any candidate. What has helped the perpetuation of incompetence in leadership in Benue state is zoning. Funny enough, the zoning arrangement that should ensure inclusion via rotation of power between the three senatorial districts in Benue state has effectively excluded the Idomas with their competent candidates. So power has been rotating between Zones B and A! And even in Zones A and B, competent candidates are excluded from the selection process. Benue is where it is today because of a skewed governorship zoning arrangement where best brains with simple, workable and world class solutions are excluded and considered anathema. The present suffering and underdevelopment in Benue have proved to all that zoning benefits only the godfathers and not the people. Good enough, the present hunger and poverty in Benue state don't care if you are Igede, Idoma, Tiv, or Etulo. Zoning and ethnicity therefore will not work in 2019 Benue governorship elections as the people will end hunger and poverty via electing a competent candidate as Governor.
The third source of surprise is the high level of voters' awareness of the sources/causes of Benue's poor governance. The internet and social media have contributed greatly to opening the eyes of the voters in this regard.
The fourth source of surprise is that voters will vote for individual governorship candidates and not political parties. Party members constitute only about 2% of the voting population. The voters who don't belong to any party are about 98%. They are very much aware and will decide intelligently who will win the 2019 governorship elections based on the following criteria: previous achievements, tried and tested character, educational and professional qualifications, evidence of community service, exposure and networking credentials, competence, workable strategy to rescue the state from the current quagmire, and courage to retire the godfathers.
