NEW ALBUM -- "Bearings," my fifth studio album (and first in two and a half years), is finally out today in all formats! The new record features twelve songs about many different types of landscape, ranging from grasslands and railyards to highways and volcanoes, all written by way of an improvisation-based process that was scary to work with at first but that I ultimately found to be a pretty fun, challenging, and oddly appropriate way to write about geography.

My reason for intentionally writing and recording this new album in a more fast-paced and improvisational style than I normally use was to help it reflect the real-life experience of learning a new topographic space on the fly, through movement. I've never written an entire album in quite this way before, and I'm very grateful to the people who helped me do so: huge thanks to Kevin Harper for patiently recording the original improvised piano tracks, to Dan Cardinal for producing, mixing, and mastering at Dimension Sound Studios, where we built all the songs out into something a bit more three-dimensional, to Harris Paseltiner (of Darlingside) and Paul Kinsman (of friend-since-middle-school) for lending their respective instruments in all the right places, to Katie Ione Craney for the use of her beautiful artwork on the cover, to Tony Petersen for engineering a couple last-minute overdubs with me, and to the great Charlie Parr for being so supportive of my instrumental reinterpretation of his song "1922 Blues." Thanks also to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's GEODES team and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for their support of the volcano music on this album and to the Tallgrass Artist Residency and the Volland Foundation for giving me the opportunity to explore and write songs about the prairie. And importantly/obviously, many, many thanks to all of you for listening.

You can order Bearings on CD or vinyl at bencosgrove.com/store, or digitally at http://bencosgrove.bandcamp.com/album/bearings. And stream it everywhere at songwhip.com/ben-cosgrove/bearings! Thanks again, everybody. I can’t wait to hear what you think. ❤️🎹🧭✨🙏

We had a great week in New York rehearsing and performing our Olmsted bicentennial program, Lungs of the City!

Huge thanks to all our NY partners, especially to Prospect Park for working with us to create such a special site-specific performance that welcomed an incredibly warm and enthusiastic audience.

It was really meaningful to have four of the eight LandscapeMusic.org composers on the program join us in NY, and most of all it was just wonderful to have the opportunity to gather our team and perform beautiful music together!

We'll be sharing some excerpts of our performances over the next few weeks - stay tuned!

Oliver is the director of Juventas New Music Ensemble, one of our ensemble partners in the Lungs of the City series. Juventas gave a beautiful Boston premiere of the Olmsted program in March and will also be sharing more performances this summer!
