Alchemy East and West

"Alchemy may be defined as the unveiling of the primordial perfection hidden within the heart of appearances. In its most universal sense, alchemy traces the transformations of reality as it unfolds from and returns to this ever-present (yet ever-concealed) origin. In this context, the natural and spiritual aims of alchemy, from gold-making to god-making, reveal themselves as particular applications of a single universal process. In order to explore this, the present course will provide a detailed introduction to the world’s alchemical traditions. Beginning with its dual roots in Pharaonic Egypt and Taoist China, we will examine the flourishing of alchemy in Hellenistic, Byzantine, Islamicate, Indo-Tibetan, and European cultural contexts. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the relationship of alchemy to the esoteric currents of Theurgy, Gnosis, Sufism, Ta**ra, and Hermeticism. Having laid the concrete historical foundations of alchemy, we will then explore predominant motifs in the theory, mythos, and praxis of alchemy across traditions, including its metallurgical, cosmological, and mystical applications. In doing this, we hope to liberate alchemy from its persistent materialist misconceptions within academia, and to show that transcendence and concretion, rather than being at variance, mutually inform a single wisdom".

According to the Stoics, our cognitive systems are so designed that certain notions arise in every individual and constitute the “common conceptions” which serve as a touchstone (criterion) in argument. This paper shows how Neoplatonist philosophers from Plotinus to Iamblichus integrate the stoic view into their accounts of knowledge. More precisely, Neoplatonist philosophers regard common conceptions as ordinary concepts which arise naturally in humans and reflect basic features of reality (it is controversial whether common conceptions involve inborn cognitive contents). Plotinus and Porphyry furthermore suggest that common conceptions are the same for all humans, while disagreement arises through philosophical enquiry: it is therefore crucial to select those philosophical doctrines which develop common conception adequately and do not conflict with them. Plotinus’ discussion of time in 3.7, Porphyry’s account of knowledge and definition, Porphyry’s and Iamblichus’ discussions about theology provide interesting and under-investigated evidence about these aspects of Neoplatonist epistemology.

This is an interesting point. Agrippa is saying that natural things (stones, plants, animals), as they are composed from the elements, even though they are associated with celestial qualities, we can purify them and remove some of the impurities that the elements added to them. These preparations make them more amenable to magical properties. This process is most exemplified by alchemy. The alchemical process of removing the spirit separates the body and soul of the material into a pure and subtle material.

"[The World] Spirit propagates all occult qualities in herbs, stones, metals, and animals through the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and the stars above the planets. However, this spirit can be more useful to us if one understands how to remove it from the other elements, or at least use those things that are most abundant with this spirit. Accordingly, these things, where the spirit is less immersed into the body and less confined to matter, act more powerfully and perfectly, and also more readily generate their like: for in them are all generative and seminal virtues.

For this reason, alchemists try to separate spirit from gold and silver."

While still early, it appears most all the structures in Lahaina were destroyed, including Lahaina Shingon Mission (Hokoji Temple), and Rev. Meguro's home. Many people outside of Lahaina became acquainted with Rev. Meguro through his morning prayers streamed on FaceBook. We received word that Rev. In Japan, February 3 is called Setsubun to mark the day before winter turns to spring.

Mamemaki is a Setsubun tradition where roasted soybeans are scattered in homes to drive out ogres and to welcome good fortune. In general Buddhist thought, the different colours of ogres represent the different worldly desires that hinder enlightenment. Let’s be conscious of our hindrances and work for a good year!

Regardless of your interpretation, mamemaki is fun annual tradition that has been passed down through generations. Koboji’s members prepared bags of fukumaki beans to share on Sunday’s service.

"The Star of the Magi is a practice that flows, in part, from the esoteric Christian tradition. It is both a meditation and a state of mystical awareness; and is based on a channelled text. It works to produce an "Epiphany of Light" – that is, awaken the eternal, innocent Divine Consciousness, symbolized as the Christ Child – and heralded and transmitted by the Star of the Magi.

As a Christ-centered practice, this particular meditation works by attuning our consciousness to the Living Presence of Jesus. This takes the form of a gentle yogic technique that uses visualization and recitation of the Name of Light.
