Super Dope&Extra Lit Magazine Melanated journalism. Equal parts news, culture, opinion, and shade. SDEL is equal parts news, culture, opinion, and shade. It's a love letter to melanin.

Somewhere at the intersection of “digital magazine” and “blog,” you can find a terracotta house with a whirlpool bath and a sun bleached "MICHELLE’S MY FIRST LADY” poster in the window - that house is SDEL. It’s a little bit of everything, but it isn’t for everyone. It's open arms and also a "F**k you." It's educated melanated journalism, made by People of Color for People of Color - and we think that's both Super Dope&Extra Lit.

If the Trump Administration were a TV show, 2020 has been the no-expense-spared final season. From the racial demonstrations to the 250,000 Americans dead from a grossly mishandled pandemic, this year has been the best display of Trump’s ineptitude, deception, and racism – and yet white people s...

"I began doubting myself... 'Mother Nature is not just exclusive to white people.'

After some research, I discovered I wasn't just imagining it. The outdoor industry advertises for a white audience because it is, by and large, a white-dominated field."

What do you think of when you think of an outdoor enthusiast? Probably a white, upper-middle-class cisgender male or female rocking REI gear. Absorbing the outdoors as a woman of color has been a unique experience; one that’s defied stereotypes. Living in Portland, Oregon, I have taken

"When might we see more of what makes up Eve’s Korean identity outside of the vaguely alluded tokenization of it?"

Since its inception, BBC America’s Killing Eve has been generally lauded for its depiction of strong female characters and breaking stereotypes while centering a character with Asian heritage — the show’s eponymous Korean protagonist (played by Korean Canadian-American actor Sandra Oh). Season...

Sabah Virani questions how and if we'll see real change amidst all these resignations and pledges of solidarity.

On one hand, you have a show that is putting money in the pockets of actors of color. Yet, the story does not center on BIPOC at all. Though there are Black actors on stage, they are not playing Black people, nor are they telling a Black story. Alexander Hamilton and his constituents were very real

I thought Elijah Mcclain was murdered this week. He was murdered in August 2019. It's been almost a year and we are just now hearing about it and demanding justice for this man. If we didn't have the video, would we have ever found out?

We don't know their names or their murderers. But we know they're there. We feel their absence, even in anonymity. We mourn all the same. We fight to end the cycle. We pray we do not fall a direct victim to it. We hope if we do, there is a camera nearby.

CONTENT CALL:

For the first time ever, Super Dope&Extra Lit Magazine is excited to announce that we are able to provide payment for submissions!

In the beginning, we were so small. All of our pieces were the product of generosity and the burning need to be heard. While we are still small, we are now
in the position to offer compensation for submissions that are selected for publication! We hope that as our company and influence grows, we will be able to offer even more compensation to contributors.

SDEL is currently offering $25 per piece, with a 700-word minimum for journalism, op-eds, and open letters.

We are also offering $15 per poem, with a fifteen-line minimum.

The current categories of content on our website are: Film&TV, Famous People, Culture, Music, Politics, and Open Letters. We welcome pieces that fall into one or more of these categories.

Please submit your work by either using the form on this page:
https://www.sdelmag.com/submission or by emailing us at sdelmag[at]gmail.com.

If you have not yet written the piece but have ideas for an article, we accept project proposals. Please tell us your proposed article(s) and also leave a link to some of your previous written work so we can get a feel for your voice.

Not a writer? SDEL also welcomes submissions from photographers and filmmakers of color. Please send all submissions to sdelmag[at]gmail.com along
with a brief introduction of yourself.

All work will remain the property of the author. SDEL does not ask for exclusivity on self-submissions, though we do request first publication rights.

Lastly, SDEL is able to compensate writers in large part due to donations made from our online support system. If you’d like to make a donation, you can do so here: https://www.paypal.com/biz/fund?id=JHX8RUYLLHXZW

Two words: Thank you.

Also: Damn.

The outpouring of love we have received since announcing our relaunch has been surreal. We are humbled by how much we’ve been missed. We are floored by your donations – especially in the middle of economic disaster. We are excited as hell to get back to work.

Thank you for the love. Seriously. It feels so so good to be back. 🤎

So, here’s what’s up.

Yesterday, we were motivated to take action.

was supposed to be a day about elevating Black voices. It was about taking a break from your normal content and instead replacing it with links, resources, and information.
It was not about taking a break from social media. It was never about posting a black square and checking out.

Amidst all the black squares and silence, we realized that educated, melanated voices are needed now more than ever. SDEL is needed more than ever. So, we’re coming out of hiatus and we’re hitting the ground running.

First thing: We’ve donated $500 total to various GoFundMes, bailfunds, and mutual aid organizations. This includes the Justice for Breonna Taylor GoFundMe, the For James Scurlock’s Family GoFundMe, the Minnesota Healing Justice Network, The Atlanta Solidarity Fund, and the Metro Atlanta Mutual Aid Fund.

Second: We are now offering payment for submissions. Not only do we want Black voices heard, we want them compensated for their labor. We are an extremely small organization, so we cannot offer as much as we’d like, but we’re doing our best with what we have. If you are interested in submitting work, more details will be coming in a separate announcement.

Third: We will be holding a digital short film competition. Before our hiatus, we had a dream of hosting a Black film festival. Due to the presence of COVID, we’ve had to amend this idea to fit our current climate. While it may not be possible to gather, we still want to celebrate Black creativity. There will be cash prizes, so keep your eyes peeled for more information on that in the coming weeks.

Lastly: If you’re interested in keeping SDEL going, you can donate to us here: https://www.paypal.com/biz/fund?id=JHX8RUYLLHXZW. Like many Black businesses, we look larger from the outside than we really are. Every dollar is appreciated.

We back, y’all. Time to kick some ass.

So, the bad news: It's with a somber heart that we have to announce the suspension of Super Dope&Extra Lit Magazine. This magazine has been a force to be reckoned with this past year and a half; We've thrown two events. We entertained over 16,000 readers from six out of seven continents. We became the number one Google search result for "why can't I say n***a?" But with great power comes great responsibility and the site simply became too much for boss lady to handle at this point in her journey.
So, the good news: This is not a good-bye. It's a "BRB." SDEL was/is too strong to disappear forever. The primary reason for our hiatus is that the website was not getting the love, attention, and content that it deserved. So, know that SDEL will come back eventually and when it does, the content will be of the caliber that the magazine deserves.
ALSO, know that this doesn't mean SDEL is slipping into the shadows. There will still be content and activity on the SDEL Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube accounts -- because we ain't dead, baby. Consider this us retreating into our cocoon so we can plan, strategize, and rebuild. When we emerge, best believe we'll be a butterfly.
Thank you so much for your support thus far and we can't wait to regroup and give you the most dope and lit version of ourselves.

Much love,
Super Dope&Extra Lit Magazine

We've steadily climbed in exposure and support since our launch last July! We are truly grateful to all those who helped us get to where we are now.

Since our launch, our readership has grown to cover all fifty states and six of the seven continents. We've showcased the voices of people of color from a range of different backgrounds and experiences. Now, our mission is to move forward by building and running community engagement workshops in a variety of subjects, increasing recruitment, compensating our writers and contributors for their work (something we truly believe in), and expanding the way in which we cover hot topics to include video, podcasts, and more.

In order to do all that, we rely on donation support from our events and community. If you're unable to attend our Q***r Cabaret fundraiser, but want to help out please consider donating to our PayPal! And please share!

SDEL relies on communal support to continue thriving and striving toward our goals of bringing youthful, colorful voices to the forefront of media.

And if you want to come to our Q***r Cabaret, peep our website for tickets and info!

In times like these, we at SDEL urge all our fellow POC folk to sit down with your younger siblings, children, loved ones and friends of color and remind them that their life is visible, valid, and beautiful. Share with them historical figures that look like them that have made an impact on not just this country, but the world. Help them to achieve their dreams. The more you instill in them that we are here, and we're staying because we are forces to be reckoned with, the more informed and confident they'll be as they grow up in this messy media and world we are in today. Our children are our future, let them know that.

Peace and Love 💜

We will not show violence against POC bodies, but we will show this: This is capital 'R' Racism, alive and well in USAmerica.

Racism has a face. A family. A friend group. Resources and escorts.
It's fu***ng real.
