Just hearing about the sad news of Sandy Stables.

He always invited me into the boardroom for sandwiches and a cup of tea and he always "persuaded" me to buy a raffle ticket - surprisingly I actually won and instead of asking me to choose my prize he thrust a bottle of wine into my hand and said "For Mrs SHFLtv" !!

He will be sadly missed at Keith Football Club and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

SANDY STABLES

Keith Football Club mourns the loss of a truly great servant, friend and colleague with the sad passing today of their honorary President Sandy Stables.

Sandy was a larger than life character who loved Keith FC, and will forever be known as the driving force at Kynoch Park as Chairman during a period when his beloved Maroons won six Highland League titles, 6 League Cups, 2 Qualifying Cups, 2 Aberdeenshire Cups, 5 Aberdeenshire District Shields, 5 Aberdeenshire League titles and 6 Highland Youth Cups.

His drive to win was legendary, but he was much more than an incredible Ambassador for Keith FC, he also flew the flag stoically for the Highland League at the SFA for many, many years. He was surely the wise old owl of the Highland League, and a countless number of individuals from every North Club and beyond sought his counsel on so many footballing matters down through the years.

He joined the Maroons as a stripling Committee member fifty years ago and rose to be the Keith FC figurehead for nearly forty years. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and in the heat of ’battle’ took no prisoners, but afterwards in the respective Boardrooms would discuss the finer points of the game often with a great deal of joviality.

He was rightly proud of his having served two terms of Office as Highland League President, and being an SFA Councillor for umpteen years, serving both with great distinction.

He took great pride in Keith FC winning so many honours, given the small catchment area, and lived and breathed the Maroons.

It was only in the last two years when his health sadly began to weaken that he took a back seat, but he was still to be found in his normal spot in the Stand named after him, encouraging his Team to bigger and better things.

He was surely a friend to all in the family of the Highland league outwith his main love Keith FC.

To say he will be sadly missed is a massive understatement, and all at Keith Football Club send their thoughts to his wife Joan and their family at this very sad time.

Farewell to a great Keith FC Legend, Sandy will never be forgotten.

As a mark of respect tomorrow’s game has been postponed.

Such sad news to hear about Ally MacLeod. An articulate man in front of camera when doing interviews.
He will be sadly missed by Nairn County FC & Deveronvale FC and the Highland League.

STATEMENT: Everyone at Nairn County has been saddened to hear of the passing of the club’s former assistant manager, Ally Macleod after a brave battle with Leukaemia. He was 37.

Macleod came to the club following a highly-successful spell as the coach of the Brora Rangers under-19s squad, guiding them to the latter stages of the Scottish Youth Cup on two occasions, where they enjoyed glamorous away ties at both Rangers and Celtic. He also took his charges to the Highland Youth League (West) title in his final campaign at Dudgeon Park before clinching the overall Highland Youth League championship with playoff success at MacKessack Park.

Nairn enjoyed major success during Macleod’s time as assistant manager, winning the 2010/11 Highland League (Morganti) Cup with a 4-0 final victory over Fraserburgh before taking home the North of Scotland Cup in October 2012 thanks to a 2-1 AET win over Wick Academy. That same season, the club reached the third round of the Scottish Cup, defeating SPFL League Two side Clyde 3-2 at Station Park following a 3-3 draw at Broadwood before also taking League One Forfar Athletic to a replay following a dramatic 3-3 draw in Angus, where County battled back from 3-0 down at half time before eventually going down 3-2 in the replay.

His last match in the Nairn dugout was the 3-1 home win over Forres Mechanics on December 28th 2013, after which he took time out to concentrate on his recovery following his original diagnosis with Myelofibrosis in September 2011.

Macleod returned to football when he was appointed as the manager of Deveronvale in October 2015 where he served for just under a year, leaving Princess Royal Park the following September. He then served as a coach under Grant Munro’s management of Brora Rangers during the 2016/17 season.

Club Chairman Donald Matheson commented: “We are all absolutely devastated to have received this truly awful news today. The thoughts of everyone at Nairn County go out to Ally’s family, friends and especially his wife, Alanna at this terrible time.

“Ally was a brave character who showed his fighting spirit when tackling this disease. He was a fantastic and intelligent coach who put so much into his football - he simply just immersed himself in it and was determined to be successful. He played a major part in the successes the club enjoyed during his time here and to have been a successful Highland League coach with various clubs despite having never played football at this level tells you all you need to know about his ability and hard work as a coach.

“He was always happy to chat away about football whenever he returned to Station Park as a spectator or an opponent and he never showed any signs of allowing the disease which was to claim his life getting the better of him or detract from his enjoyment of football. He will be sorely missed.”

So sad to hear about Calum Riddell, a young local lad from Nairn County FC. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Rebekah, and both their families.

Ross

STATEMENT: With the permission of his family, Nairn County Football Club is saddened to confirm that our player, Calum Riddell, has passed away very peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He was 28.

Calum was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma – a malignant brain tumour – in the summer and died at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Tuesday afternoon.

Calum came through the club’s youth development programme as a youngster before moving on to Nairn St Ninian, where he spent eight successful seasons, playing a huge part in the Elginshire Cup winning team of 2012.

He returned to his boyhood club in the summer of 2016 for another crack at the Highland League and made 28 appearances before the early symptoms of the disease that was to go on to claim his life rendered him unavailable for selection towards the end of last season.

The match at Rothes tonight had already been postponed given Calum’s condition and Saturday’s home match against Huntly will be postponed too. The club would like to thank Rothes FC, Huntly FC and the Scottish Highland Football League for their understanding at this difficult time.

Sunday’s Benefit Match for the Calum Riddell Fund between Nairn County FC and the Calum Riddell All Stars will still go ahead at the request of Calum’s wife and family.

Everyone at the club extends their sincere condolences to Calum’s family and friends and asks that their privacy be respected at this time.

Congratulations to Buckie Thistle for winning the League. All the best in the play-offs too.

If you win promotion why don't you set up your own Buckie Thistle TV channel and reap the benefits for your club. Fortunately the leagues above you don't have the archaic demands in their media contracts that the P&J have forced upon the league - although the LMC members are obviously too weak or stupid (or both!) to demand the best for the Highland League Clubs !

Drop me an email if you need any advice. Enjoy the play-offs !

A large crowd gathered today in Fort William to pay their respects to David MacDonald who recently passed away.

A lovely quote taken from Lossiemouth Chairman Rab Mulheron's page:

"Back from David MacDonald's funeral in Fort William a great turnout for him and good to meet up with a few friends old and new from Fort William FC also good to see a few well known Highland League referees in the congregation...special mention to the Fort William FC players who took their ties off at the graveside and put them in beside David's coffin a great gesture lads..."

Sorry to hear of the passing of Charlie Robertson, aged 88. A keen cameraman and friend of us here in Nairn.
Charlie and I had great banter about cameras and filming techniques.

Whenever I was filming Nairn FC he used to challenge me to see who would edit the game first !

Thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

All at Deveronvale are shocked by the devastating news that Leigh Henderson has passed away. It was an absolute pleasure working with him during the past few years. He won the hearts of the fans with his 'Braveheart' performances, and was the 'life and soul' of the dressing room. Only 34 years old, it's an absolute tragedy. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time. RIP Hendo. You will be sadly missed.

The man who has financed Highland outfit Brora Rangers has claimed that the Scottish FA forced the Highland Football League clubs to vote for the pyramid system under 'duress'. Ben Mackay, speaking to The Highland Times, hit out at the Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan for claiming that the HFL side's complaints were too late. In a damning indictment of how the Scottish FA acted during the process of promoting the Highland Football League, Mackay claims that the governing body threatened to dismantle the league if they failed to support the new system.
