Doing lab work on DIY video on the ApocaDocs YouTube Channel for Michael Jensen's and Jim Poyser's new book. So, I cut a book trailer using public domain animation of the world being hit by an asteroid, and then dupped it for promoting the apocadocs.com page; shot high-key-lit interview of Michael solo in the SLC hotel room on the fly, and then some more subtley lit footage of Michael with Jim on iChat. (Note the use of the master two-shot with intercut close up of Jim in the computer in the "Faster Than Expected" piece.) Of course, this is personal video, so it’ll never be the kind of polished thing you see on TV. But it gets the word out! More to come . . .

Remember to watch those file sizes! Tried to import a 35 gig HD video clip into iMovie 08 and it wouldn't let me. So I opened the clip in Quicktime, trimmed to the first half of the video, and "Saved as" a new Part 1.mov clip at 17 gigs. Then repeated for the second half as a new Part 2.mov clip at 18 gigs. Voila! These two smaller clips imported fine.
P.S. I've imported up to a 27 gig clip.

EXTRACTING AUDIO FROM A VIDEO CLIP
In iMovie 09, put your clip in the project timeline, then select the clip, control click, and select "Detach Audio" from the menu. That will separate the audio from the video. Then just delete the video and use the sound clip where you will.
In iMovie 08, select the clip in the events, press Shift+Control and drag the clip to the project timeline. It will drop in as an audio clip.

NEWS FLASH: US Copyright Office has declared "fair use" of clips of copyright-protected works in documentaries. Since our videos, when exploring issues contained in our books, are essentially mini documentaries, this could have a huge impact on our ability to "punch up" our content with clips from relevant other cultural works.

Documentary filmmakers today gained access to previously "locked" DVD content for fair use in their productions under an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act granted to them by the US Copyright Office.
