Winter? Bleak. Frosty wind, earth as iron, water as stone, so the old song goes. The shortest days, the longest nights. The trees are bare and shivering. The summer's leaves? Dead litter.
The world shrinks; the sap sinks.
But winter makes things visible. And if there's ice, there'll be fire.
It's the season that teaches us survival. Here comes Winter.

Promising debuts, interesting themes, and long-awaited publications—the year seems to have started out pretty good. Here are a few notable titles published in January. . .

P.S. What are your picks of the month?
📖Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
In this ferociously imaginative novel, abortion is once again illegal in America, in-vitro fertilization is banned, and the Personhood Amendment grants rights of life, liberty, and property to every embryo. In a small Oregon fishing town, five very different women navigate these new barriers alongside age-old questions surrounding motherhood, identity, and freedom.
📖The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes. Their prophecies inform their next five decades.
📖The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers
The Monk of Mokha is the exhilarating true story of a young Yemeni American man, raised in San Francisco, who dreams of resurrecting the ancient art of Yemeni coffee but finds himself trapped in Sana’a by civil war.
📖Peach by Emma Glass
“Emma Glass's fictional debut – a novella-cum-prose poem – packs one hell of a punch … Glass's commitment to the visceral is like nothing else I've read … Peach inhabits a strange, horror-story realm of the hyperreal, and Glass's vision goes a long way towards portraying an experience that's near-impossible to articulate” – Observer
📖The Infinite Future by Tim Wirkus
An exhilarating, original novel, set in Brazil, Idaho, and outer space, about an obsessive librarian, a down-at-heel author, and a disgraced historian who go on the hunt for a mystical, life-changing book–and find it.
📖The Largesse of the Sea Maiden by Denis Johnson
Written in the luminous prose that made him one of the most beloved and important writers of his generation, this collection finds Johnson in new territory, contemplating the ghosts of the past and the elusive and unexpected ways the mysteries of the universe assert themselves.

Highlands and lakes, monsters and legends, whiskey and short bread—Scotland is one of the most beautiful places to be. Our second read this year is some great writing from the country which boasts of Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Muriel Spark and Irvine Welsh.

🍂🍂🍂
Peri, a married, wealthy, beautiful Turkish woman, is on her way to a dinner party at a seaside mansion in Istanbul when a beggar snatches her handbag. As she wrestles to get it back, a photograph falls to the ground -- an old polaroid of three young women and their university professor. A relic from a past -- and a love -- Peri had tried desperately to forget.
Three Daughters of Eve is set over an evening in contemporary Istanbul, as Peri arrives at the party and navigates the tensions that simmer in this crossroads country between East and West, religious and secular, rich and poor. Over the course of the dinner, and amidst an opulence that is surely ill-begotten, terrorist attacks occur across the city. Competing in Peri's mind however are the memories invoked by her almost-lost polaroid, of the time years earlier when she was sent abroad for the first time, to attend Oxford University. As a young woman there, she had become friends with the charming, adventurous Shirin, a fully assimilated Iranian girl, and Mona, a devout Egyptian-American. Their arguments about Islam and feminism find focus in the charismatic but controversial Professor Azur, who teaches divinity, but in unorthodox ways. As the terrorist attacks come ever closer, Peri is moved to recall the scandal that tore them all apart.
Elif Shafak is the number one bestselling novelist in her native Turkey, and her work is translated and celebrated around the world. In Three Daughters of Eve, she has given us a rich and moving story that humanizes and personalizes one of the most profound sea changes of the modern world.

Hey guys, meet our subscriber for the month (December) - the talented aka . .
A talented artist, lecturer and bibliophile, Paulami is a popular face on the bookstagram circuit. . .
Paulami speaking:
Hello book world! Paulami here. There was a time when I used to call myself a voracious reader. I still maintain that when I talk about books but it has grown and evolved from being just a fast reader to a more evolved phase which involves sharing recommendations, hoarding books, talking about books with other fellow bookworms and such. I also love to doodle and books have helped me shape how I perceive the art world as well. Stephen King said that books are a uniquely portable magic and I most certainly believe in that. Let's read and let's grow. . .
Top 3 recommendations:
1. Em and the Big Hoom by Jerry Pinto
2. ‎Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
3. ‎Hunger by Roxane Gay . .
Current read: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden . .
Fav quotes:
You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. -C.S. Lewis

The BoTM for the Nov box (World fiction, as I keep pointing out...they have a poetry and short story box choice too) is Conversations with friends by Sally Rooney which has been nominated for the 2017 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award and the book jacket blurb gives me a toe curl feel in the anticipation of reading it. The Nov box came with two sachets of Olinda Green tea, a library card designed coaster, an art print mirroring the theme of female friendship in the BoTM and two book quote cards. The BoTM is never unveiled except for a few hints and keeping the shroud of secrecy, it comes wrapped in brown paper complete with a string...the old fashioned way (swipe for the second picture)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And what's not to love about the response from as and when I get to them with queries, concerns or just chat about books over the DM. Those who have not tried out the folks, look them up....based in Chennai, their book choice is pure gold and I can't recommend them enough ❤❤❤❤❤

Hey guys, meet our subscriber for the month (October) - the lovely .
An avid reader and a dedicated bookstagrammer her picture perfect shots are worth fawning over. Read on to know more. . .
Rijuta speaking:
I grew up with books and then made books my living. It has been ten years now from my undergraduate to my PhD where I have been involved with literature. And now I am working as an English teacher surrounded by books that I love and admire. Books are not just an escape from reality. What they are to me are companions and open worlds that I can journey into. At any given time, you can find me buried in the pages of a book either for pleasure or for work. You will also find that I am a little too enthusiastic. Other than that, I love cooking up a storm. When I am not teaching or reading, I usually love experimenting with new recipes.

▫️My Top 3 Book Recommendations
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
2. The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles
3. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
▫️My current read - Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders
▫️My Favourite quotes:
"In vain have I struggled. This will not do. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you" - Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
"Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies? and even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart: I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence" - Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino
"I always imagined that paradise will be a kind of a library" - Jorge Luis Borges . .
