Encounter Turn Order In Aspyrica: While Initiative is a character’s readiness and ability to act, it does not always determine turn order. Fearsome creatures require high Presence to take action, while frightening foes, such as banshees or ghosts, demand a high Resolve to act first.

In Aspyrica, there is no weapon damage. A dagger in capable hands is as deadly as a sword. Combat is about outmaneuvering your opponent to deliver a coup de grace, or finishing stroke.

As I am getting closer to launching the Aspyrica Kickstarter, I want to begin to share some of the system's innovations. The first is movement:

In Aspyrica, there is no "move" action. Fatigue is a secret algorithm that measures the cards in the discard pile. It further takes into account the cards remaining in the character deck, play area, and hand. During a task, the system assumes the character moves the amount needed to attempt the task, whether tumbling to engage a foe, exerting effort to disable a trap, or evading a rampaging giant.
This innovation allows players to focus on narrating their task to create epic game play—imagine performing a Charge task like this:

I charge toward the giant, throwing my spear toward its massive leg. It penetrates its thick calf and as I slide beneath the giant, I grab my spear, and thrust upward.

Thanks for the comments on the previous post about "free form magic" and a "master spell list". It led me to develop a simple magic system for Aspyrias that allows for both types of magic to exist.

The magic system is also limitless - which means to say it has no spell slots, times per day, magic points, etc.; instead the risk of casting spells falls on the caster. Also, an innate timer in the form of the character deck further prevents spellcasters from unleashing powerful spells round after round.

But, I still need help with the terminology. Spell casters that push themselves can suffer a magical backlash. My first thought is to call it a Wild Surge, but it reminds me too much of Wild Magic in D&D.

Is there a better name? Any thoughts?

How do you feel about "free form" magic over a "master list" of spells?

Blood Magic received a spotlight on Nerd Immersion.

On this week's episode I talk about Blood Magic. This supplement was highlighted in the March Unearthed Arcana article by Wizards of the Coast. It offers 4 new character archetypes, a new subrace, new spells and new magical items. These can be used in any campaign, although their flavor is very suit...

MARKSMAN UPDATE: I am hard at work with the new material for the Marksman (Thanks to all who contributed to reach this goal). Here is a tidbit of what I am working on:

Flintlock Mage: While few understand the mechanical mysteries of the dwarven flintlock, it appears that several unlocked its secrets. In truth, a handful of magi discovered their innate connection with Arcanum, a powerful alchemical stone, and can channel their sorcerous powers through the dwarven artifacts. Though it appears as a form of speckled quartz resembling chalcedony, Arcanum stones are in fact small fragments of a petrified dragon's heart.
The dwarven forged barrel of the firearm inadvertently allows flintlock magi to exploit their bond with the Arcanum and ignite this wellspring of magic. While the mechanical aspects of the firearm remain a mystery, flintlock magi use the weapons to propel not lead-forged bullets, but raw arcane power.
