Monkeypox (MPOX) is a viral infection that demands our immediate attention. It spreads through close contact with an infected person, contaminated surfaces, or respiratory droplets.

Key symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash that can appear anywhere on the body. If you experience any of these signs, seek medical advice immediately.

Now more than ever, awareness and prevention are our strongest tools in safeguarding public health. We urge everyone to stay updated on the latest information and follow recommended guidelines to protect yourself and those around you. In the greatest time of need it is essential that we empathize and provide our support to those who need it the most. 𝘼𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙀 is a donation drive that centers around providing relief through donations 🥫 to those affected by devastating calamities, such examples are from the recent 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸.

The strides we've made in global vaccine drives are among humanity's greatest achievements since it vanquished smallpox, neared the eradication of polio, and boosted child survival rates worldwide.

This year, we as well commemorate 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), recognizing our collective efforts in saving countless lives from vaccine-preventable diseases. We call on nations to bolster investments in immunization programs, safeguarding future generations.

The staggering civilian death toll and displacement figures in Gaza reflect the indiscriminate violence ravaging the region. With thousands of lives lost and millions displaced, urgent action is imperative to halt the violence and provide essential humanitarian aid. Let's prioritize peace efforts to prevent further loss and suffering in Gaza.

Each lost child represents a shattered future and a community in mourning. As turmoil escalates in Gaza, we must recognize the human toll of this crisis. Lives are at stake, and every call for action brings us closer to providing the support and relief that Gaza's people desperately need. Meet 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐨 and 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐳𝐚, the 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵-𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 who placed first and third respectively in the pharmacist licensure exams in 1908, epitomizing the resilience and excellence of Filipino women.

While limited literature on their careers is available, Matilde Arquiza and Filomena Francisco paved the way as the first two Filipino women pharmacists, catalyzing the entry of numerous others who subsequently enriched the scientific landscape of our nation.

During those times, it marked the beginning of the emphasis on the prevailing belief that women are equal to, if not surpassing, their male counterparts in every aspect.

Initiated by the passage of 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗼. 𝟭𝟬𝟱 𝘀. 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮, the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) aims to upgrade the nation’s transport system with the objective of standardizing the models of public utility vehicles to ensure compliance to environmental and safety requirements.

Among the goals of PUVMP is to phase out jeepneys that are operational for longer than fifteen years over concerns about increased carbon dioxide emissions and replacing them with newer, more environmentally friendly transport systems; ultimately overhauling the jeepneys that we use on the daily basis to reach our destinations.

However, this should not come at the cost of the livelihoods of our jeepney drivers. Each driver or operator is required to pay an approximate of PHP 1.4-3 million for a replacement vehicle and franchise up until the deadline, December 31, 2023, which has lapsed a few days ago.

The government's push for modernization lacks a comprehensive plan, potentially leaving many without viable and feasible alternatives. Instead of scrapping traditional jeepneys, a more inclusive approach could involve upgrading existing vehicles, ensuring the preservation of a rich cultural heritage. The phaseout has the potential to worsen disparities, particularly impacting those with limited resources to adjust to newer and more expensive transportation choices.

Furthermore, the burden of a nationwide overhaul like this should not be placed on our drivers; for not only it is unsustainable due to their measly incomes, but also they are being forced to put their livelihoods and savings on the line and they could lose their jobs because they cannot afford to comply.

With financial instability and inadequate public transportation services, a push for jeepney modernization threatens not just the jeepney drivers but also the daily commuters.

A 5-day strike for a forceful plea initiated by Piston, representing the jeepney drivers, is a resistance movement to oppose the PUV Modernization program and scheduled jeepney phaseout by December 31, 2023.

Although the government offered a subsidy for this modernization, it was estimated that the modernized PUV costs PHP 2.3 Million. With the offered government subsidy of PHP 160,000 this is undeniably not enough for a simple “tsuper” to afford a new one.

This progressive-aggresive modernization is anti-poor to both Jeepney drivers and jeepney commuters who are one of the poorest of the poor in the Philippines.

Are the Filipinos really prepared for this PUV modernization? Or the government could offer a much better solution for transportation concerns while valuing a socially just, public service oriented transportation system not just to the commuters but also to the once called “king of the road drivers”.
