A few of our DMV-area clients + those who were in town to speak at Jude 3 Project’s Courageous Conversations + some visiting publishing friends accepted our invitation to Georgia Brown's Restaurant, Washington D.C. last Thursday. It was a shimmering evening bejeweled with good food, laughter, bright conversation, and warm connection. We missed those who could not be with us and are regretful for those we may have missed inviting. Please count it to our heads and not our hearts. There will be more EMG nights to remember. Today we join in commemorating the emancipation of African people enslaved in the United States during Transatlantic Slavery. Juneteenth, as the celebration has been called for over a century, is observed today, June 19th.
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state [after the end of the Civil War] and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday [having been celebrated for more than 150 years in African American communities with social gatherings in Emancipation Parks to church services and other events].
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a U.S. federal holiday. (history.com)
