We are delighted to introduce the Second Semester of the Journey Through the Quran Tafsir course.

It comprises a line-by-line tafsir and a complete commentary on the Quran.

Taught by senior scholar, Shaykh Dr Asim Yusuf.
The Shaykh will be covering a 1/4 juz each week, looking at the meaning, context and guidance of the entire Quran.

The second semester (approx 15 weeks in duration), will cover Suras Al-Nisa to al-A’raf (4-7) - around 1/8th of the Quran. It will also provide an analysis of 15 popular English-language translations, to help students navigate the minefield of options.

'Am I depressed or just sad?' is the first in the series The Heart of the Matter by Shaykh Dr Asim Yusuf, an exploration of mental and spiritual health and the connective links between mind and soul. He talks about the differences between normally experienced sadness and medically defined depression, as well as signs to keep an eye on for oneself or others, and how to manage practically and emotionally if affected.

Shaykh Dr Asim is a consultant psychiatrist and Islamic scholar with 25 years of experience treating patients and teaching students. Further videos in this mental health series distill the advice he gives on a regular basis, as well as some of his long-developed frameworks for Islamic psychology.

The WinterSpring Mawlid begins at 7.30pm tonight. There will be a short programme led by Shaykh Asim Yusuf and then we will proceed to make the Ziyaarah of the Blessed Hair of the Prophet SAW starting with the ladies then followed by the men.

Tonight’s programme and the culmination of the WinterSpring Mawlid will be held at:

Smethwick Jamia Masjid

Ladies will be received on the second floor of the Masjid, whilst the men will be situated on the first floor. Women who are not praying will be guided to the non-Shari’ part of the 2nd floor. Volunteers will be on hand to guide you to the correct floors and areas.

Please come in wudhu to alleviate the pressure on the facilities and in full readiness for the Ziyaarah.

Food will be distributed at the end, after the Ziyaarah which you can take away home. No consumption of food/ drink is permitted in the prayer halls. The volunteers can guide you to areas where eating is permitted.

As we're expecting a larger crowd than usual, we kindly request your patience, support, goodwill and co-operation with regards to parking sensibly and responsibly in the designated parking areas and following the guidance of the WSM and Smethwick volunteers throughout the evening.

We are delighted to introduce our final guest speaker for WinterSpring tonight, Sayyid Shaykh Maan al-Dabbagh al-Idrisi.

Sayyid Shaykh Maan al-Dabbagh al-Idrisi is a teacher of the traditional Islamic sciences who hails from Jeddah and studied under prominent scholars such as Sayyid Muhammad b. Alawi al-Maliki.

He recently completed his doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the ‘ulama of the Hijaz in the late Ottoman Period.

Details for tomorrow’s final night of WinterSpring, culminating in the ziyaara of the Baal Mubarak, will be sent later.

We are delighted to welcome to WinterSpring our penultimate guest speaker for tonight, all the way from Leeds in the UK, Imam Qari Asim MBE.

Qari Asim is a senior Imam at Makkah Mosque in Leeds, which has won the award of being UK's model mosque. He is a Legal Director at a global law firm, DLA Piper.

He holds various positions on a number of organisations that focus on issues related to government policy, education, business, leadership, youth empowerment, gender equity, environment and social welfare.

He is Chair of Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board and senior editor of ImamsOnline. Hei is a trustee of British Future, a think-tank which addresses identity, integration and migration. He is also a trustee of the charities Peace Matters and Hope not Hate, which seeks to challenge and defeat the politics of hate and extremism.

Qari Asim is a member of ITV Yorkshire’s Diversity Group, on the advisory panel of Oxfam and on the regional leadership board of Mosaic, founded by HRH Prince of Wales, to inspire young people to realise their talents and potential.

He is passionate about fostering relations between communities and is a trustee of Christian Muslim Forum, a director of Forum for Promoting Peace (London) and one of the faith advisors to Holocaust Memorial Day Trust & the Near Neighbours
programme.

We are delighted to welcome a renowned and popular munshid and qawwal on the WinterSpring stage, Abdullah Haqani popularly known as Brother Abdullah. He is the son of Allama Hafiz Abdul Rasool Haqani who is also his spiritual mentor.

Br Abdullah is from Manchester and frequently tours the UK and abroad mesmerising audience with his unique talent and dynamic style. His ability to cross between different genres from spiritual poetry, naats, nasheeds and qawwali creates a fusion that has garnered him a wide appeal and popularity amongst the young and old alike.

Also joining us tonight for the first time on the WSM stage is Asim, the Poet, who is an award winning spoken word artist, host, singer, author and a motivational speaker.

As an international artist, he delivers a wide range of topics from hard-hitting stories to devotional poems as he conveys powerful messages to inspire and motivate others.

In 2021, he launched his first book: "Yours Sincerely, Asim" and has ventured into creating unique Spoken Word Poetry videos in praise and devotion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ available on YouTube and social media formats.

Most recently, he was awarded "Best spoken word male Poet" by the Wordplay and Flow initiative. He also hosts weekly Arabic praise poetry circles, as part of Nasheed group "As Salikoon", which has been ongoing for more than 20 years.

Tonight we are honoured to welcome to WinterSpring, Shaykh Dr Abdalla Yassin Mohamed OBE, all the way from Wales.

He was born in Khartoum, Sudan where he spent over 30 years studying traditional Islamic sciences under Shaykh el-Nayyal Abdel Qadir Abu Groon. Shaykh Abdalla received Ijazah in the sciences of Shariah which include Islamic fiqh, history & theology.

Academically, he obtained an Msc in Zoology from Khartoum University & a PhD in Psychology from Liverpool University. He is heavily involved in community relations initiatives with particular focus on marginalised members of society.

He is the founder & Chair of the Onyx Link Foundation, a think tank thats been established to promote social wellbeing & advancing active national & global citizenship.

In 2008 he received an OBE for services to Wales’s community relations.

Tonight we have the pleasure to host well known Scottish scholar, Shaykh Amer Jamil to WinterSpring Mawlid.

Shaykh Amer has been described by the Sunday herald as one of the Scotland’s most prominent and respected Muslim thinkers. He holds a (LLB) law degree from Strathclyde university and BA (Hons) in Islamic studies from the University of Wales.

He spent 10 years studying the Islamic sciences including 6 years with distinguished scholars in the Middle East (Syria and Yemen), gaining him teaching licenses (ijaza) in various Islamic sciences. His main field of interest is primarily Islamic family law; an area in which he has studied in depth having studied all four schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

In 2009 he co-founded the Solas Foundation and with his partner Shaykh Ruzwan Muhammad, established the iSyllabus Islamic studies program. He is currently the co-director of the programme.

He is also the Muslim Chaplin at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he delivers the Friday sermon and regular classes for students.

We are honoured to introduce for the first time to the WinterSpring Mawlid tonight, Shaykh Haytham Tamim.

Shaykh Tamim is a specialist in Shariah Sciences and Islamic Finance. He studied in Beirut, Damascus, Karachi, Bahrain and Dubai. He is the founder and main teacher of the Utrujj Foundation and the Chief M***i of the Lebanese Sunni community in the UK.

His extensive expertise spans over 30 years across the main Islamic jurisprudence schools of thought having studied with some of the foremost scholars in their expertise. He holds some of the highest Ijazahs in Quran, Hadith and Fiqh.

His own gift for teaching was evident when he gave his first sermon to a large audience at the age of 17 and went on to serve as a senior lecturer of Islamic transactions & comparative jurisprudence at the Islamic University of Beirut.

He won the 2015 BISCA award (British Imams & Scholars Contributions & Achievements Awards) for Outstanding Contribution to Education and Teaching. He was also named among the 100 influential Muslims in the UK by the Emerald network.

We are delighted to announce our guest scholar for tonight who has also been a popular speaker over the past WinterSpring Mawlids, Ustadh Dr Daniel Jackson.

Ustadh Daniel has studied the Islamic Sciences and the Arabic language for the last 17 years, with teachers both in the UK and abroad in Cairo, Egypt and Damascus, Syria with emphasis on Islamic spirituality.

He has a BSc in Public Health and a Masters in Philosophy and Ethics of Psychiatry.

He is one of the founders of The Olton Project in Solihull, UK where he also currently teaches.

WinterSpring warmly welcomes our first international artist, Hamza Bouzhar.

Hamza is a talented munshid who was born and raised in Morocco. He is a Sufi spiritual reciter and composer. He specialises in Arabic Maqamat and his mission is to revive the beauty of traditional Arabic, Moroccan and Andalusi qasaid to take listeners on a soulful journey through time.

He is the recipient of numerous individual and collective awards for his nasheeds in Morocco. The foundation of Hamza’s career began through performing nasheeds in schools and local festivals. Since then, Hamza has gone to perform nationally with some of Morocco’s most famous artists.

In 2021, Hamza moved to the UK to challenge himself and explore new opportunities to share the beauty of Arabic qasaid in a new country.

Tonight we are excited to welcome for the first time on the WinterSpring stage, Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ahmed Fredericks.

He was born in Nottingham where he completed his schooling before moving to Leicester for University. He completed a BEd degree in primary education specialising in Language Arts.

He has worked as a teacher and Head Teacher in England, Scotland, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and USA, as well as an educational consultant in Turkey, Yemen, Kenya and Jordan.

He has studied under many prominent traditional scholars including Ahmed Mashur al-Haddad in Jeddah and Abdul Rahman al-Khitamy in Kenya.

He translated the Essentials of Islam by Ahmed bin Zayn al-Habashi and Forty Hadith on the Quran by Mullah ‘Ali al-Qari and the translations of al-Nasaih al-Dinniya of Imam al-Haddad and Riyadatul Sibyan ofImam al-Ramli.

His interest in special educational needs drove him to co-found the organisation Islamic Texts for the Blind (Kitaba).The Islamic Texts for the Blind producing books in Braille and audio format.

Shaykh Abdul Aziz authored the bookLiving with Blindness which was used to launch a number of conferences on The Marginalised in Society addressing issues of disability and access to mosques, institutions and Islamic teachings.
