Happy ! (aka the 'August Long Weekend' or The 'Civic Holiday')

In case you were wondering WHY this day provides a nice long weekend in the middle of summer:

Simcoe Day's name is derived from John Graves Simcoe, who was the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada and founded Toronto (then known as York) in 1793. Toronto named the first Monday in August holiday Simcoe Day, starting in 1969, in honour of Simcoe.

And now you know!

On August 1st, we commemorate Emancipation Day, a day that marks the abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean colony in 1834. This is a significant day not just for the Black community but for society as a whole.
It’s a day to honor and pay homage Black ancestors who fought for their rights and the end of the practice of enslavement.

It is also a reminder of how far we have come as a society, but it is a call to action as there is still much work to be done towards equality and justice. The past cannot be erased, but it is our duty to learn from it and ensure that the mistakes of the past are never repeated again.

It is crucial that we educate ourselves and our communities on the history of this day and its significance. Doing so not only instills a greater appreciation of Black history but also allows us to have more informed conversations about racial injustice and inequality and how we can work towards a better future for all.

As we continue to work towards reconciliation and progress, let us take a moment to reflect and celebrate Emancipation Day with pride and honor for our ancestors.

Happy Emancipation Day to all!
