Working and living near Tillsonburg, and being a runner, I’d always heard stories about the Tillsonburg Legion track and field team. I heard stories of how a hometown boy took a bunch of farm kids from a to***co town, and turned them into national stars, how he got the town to rally around the team and put in a rubberized track , a feat rarely seen in a town that size...the stories were endless, and almost beyond belief. That man went on to take his skills to U Windsor and turned that university into a powerhouse, taking a few of his athletes to world class heights. In addition to all that, Dennis Fairall was universally beloved, and served as an inspiration for many in the sport. Dennis and I emailed back and forth a few years ago. I was going to make a documentary about the Tillsonburg team, and while I never got to know the man personally, those emails showed me a man who promoted camaraderie, fun and teamwork over podium spots, and that strategy took him a long way. It is with much sadness that we find out about Dennis Fairall’s passing, and our hearts go out to all who knew him, whether it be through the legion team, Windsor Lancer Track and Field or otherwise.

Running an Olympic qualifying marathon time and personal best in front of no live crowds, while being paced by 4 time Olympic Champion Mo Farah is not an experience many will ever have. Tristan Woodfine did just that at the 2020 London Marathon on their 2.1km loop this past weekend, running a 2:10:51 to become the second Canadian to run the men's qualifying standard for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We caught up with him earlier this week, back home in the Ottawa Valley and early into his quarantine. Listen via the link in the bio!
