We are excited to start a new segment, BEHIND THE LENS!
We hope to give our audience a more personal look at our work and filmmaking. Today we are discussing our past project, Women of Islam - Veiling and Seclusion.
HOW IT STARTED:
Founder, Farheen Umar, was first inspired to create documentaries when she realized that what was shown in the news was not the truth. This launched the creation of Pasha Films.
At the time, there was huge media coverage on Afghanistan and Iraq after the tragic events of 9/11. Farheen noticed the stereotypes about Hijab and the covering done by Muslim women that was promoted by popular newspapers and television media. She wanted to bring a realistic picture to the world by interviewing women about their choice of covering. This was the start of Pasha Films.
The process of creating Women of Islam involved research and planning before getting into filming. Farheen did extensive research from history books and by interviewing personalities who were knowledgeable on the subject. To show a complete picture, Farheen decided to include many countries and cultures in the film. The film involved extensive traveling and shows women from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, and the USA. For her, this was also an opportunity to step out and make a connection with her subjects and different cultures of the world.
FUN FACT:
While searching for a location to film a historical section of the documentary Farheen found an ideal location on the beaches of Karachi (Pakistan) where there are camels much like in the older tribal regions of Arabia.
