Gallery: A Literary & Arts Magazine at UTRGV Gallery at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a magazine composed of students literature, Gallery Faculty Adviser: Dr. Britt Haraway

Gallery at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a publication released every year by its students. Each Spring, the magazine is created by a class in which any student can register for. There is much talent, creativity, and beauty hidden within the minds of so many of our students and our mission is to showcase their works. We feel a duty to publish the work of our students for free, to help them launch themselves into what can be so much more.

The Valley International Poetry Festival is coming up starting April 20th. The folks there always are good about including a college student reading including UTRGV students. If you are a student interested in reading this year, drop your name in the comments. This video is of the 2020 VIPF that was online. Enjoy.

UTRGV's graduate and undergraduate creative writing students submitted videos of their poetry and short prose readings for the Valley International Poetry Festival 2020 student open mic. Readers include José Luján, Calyspo Kane, J. Villanueva, Nataly Salazar, Joaquin Castillo, Ana Chapa, and Stefan Peña. Compiled by Emmy Pérez, a volunteer host of the VIPF student open mic for over a decade, the video reflects a portion of the student creative writing community coming together online to join with the larger Valley literary community for the fest during this time of shelter-at-home, April 2020.

Writers, there are two new classes in Creative Writing this Fall semester.
#1
ENGL 3353 – Creative Writing Cross-Genre
MW 2-315 in Edinburg and Online meetings. Taught by jo reyes-boitel (currently listed as taught by Claude Haraway)

This new course will satisfy CW credits in the ENGL Major Concentration in CW.

Hybridity in creative writing has received increased attention in recent years. Why is the hybrid text gaining popularity now? What conditions have given it a wider audience and how has the definition of hybridity changed over the last decade? We will consider ways current social and societal boundaries and genre serve as points of departure for creative writing that allows for more avenues into the literary community. We will look at the role voices of marginalized communities have had in recent expansion of hybrid writing.

This cross-genre course will provide an overview of hybridity in literature, with a focus on new and recent work. Through some classic texts, however, we will discover that hybrid literature is not new. We will examine genres and their characteristics, then see how these characteristics are reconfigured and blended to produce new work. Students will generate their own work through such techniques as the haibun, hermit crab, found text, video and graphic work, and flash as a starting point for our work into hybrid literature.

Required Book

Family Resemblance: An Anthology and Exploration of 8 Hybrid Literary Genres,

Avg cost: $17.00.

Course led by Jo Reyes jo reyes-boitel is a poet, essayist, and playwright. jo is also a q***r, mixed-Latinx parent working in community. Somehow born in Minnesota, their family calls Texas, Florida, Mexico, and Cuba home.

Recent and forthcoming publications include Huizache, OyeDrum, Scalawag Journal, The Ice Colony, Windward Review, La Voz de Esperanza, Chachalaca Review, Borderlands, The Americas Review, and Your Impossible Voice.

jo’s chapbook mouth (Neon Hemlock, 2021) addressed the struggle of working through others’ views and dominant culture’s impact on the body and the self – toward liberation.

Their first book, Michael + Josephine, a novel in verse (FlowerSong Press, 2019), reimagined St. Michael the Archangel as a q***r woman who begins a love relationship with Josephine, a disaster relief worker.
