“‘What’s Going on with Ordinary People’, like with a lot of my songs, you can get the main idea in the title. We have probably all been wondering about this lately, with ordinary people jacked-up on propaganda, targeted advertising and general paranoia.” - Glenn Donaldson

New Reds, Pinks & Purples and the last single to be taken from Unwishing Well before its release on 12th April. The best one yet? The bar’s always high but Glenn keeps finding a way to top it…

“Learning to Love a Band is about that blissful moment when you realize you truly love and understand a band’s music, but it’s also about being in a band, and that honeymoon phase you find yourself in which inevitably ends. I love music, and I love the people I have played music with over the years (mostly).”—Glenn

New Reds, Pinks & Purples today! And with it perhaps the quintessential sentiment of the RP&P universe?! Another stone cold beauty whichever way you spin it. New album, Unwishing Well, is out 12th April. //

“Springs Eternal is a big, philosophically questing record, a velvet glove hiding a death-like grip” - MOJO (4/5)
“…a singular master at work, bending form, lyricism and production to underline his prescient thesis.” - Loud & Quiet (8/10)
“Doyle has made a record that is as intricate as it is infectious, creating a deft yet complex pop collage that turns a troubled and chaotic world into a beautiful spectacle.” - Uncut (8/10)
“ his most fearless record yet.” - the Quietus - Album of the Week

William Doyle’s new album is out now and the verdict seems to be unanimous. Should you need any encouragement to listen, here’s a selection of some very favourable words from the Quietus, MOJO, Uncut, Loud & Quiet, and Far Away. //

William Doyle’s latest album, Springs Eternal, is out today and represents his most ambitious and playful collection to date. Taking a panoramic view of the ecstasies and agonies of life in the 2020s, the record asks how we exist as fragile flesh and blood – our hearts beating and our minds racing – in an unprecedented, almost unimaginable time of runaway climate destruction and technological expansion. These are the Big Ideas, cast relatable, sometimes intimate, sometimes ringing and radiant.

Springs Eternal is out now digitally, on CD and in two different vinyl editions - blue vinyl with the standard orange artwork, and on orange vinyl with limited edition blue artwork. Buy/stream link in bio

William Doyle tours in support of the album in March and April next year, as well as playing a series of instores in the UK.

Instores in February:
Friday 16th - Rough Trade West, London
Saturday 17th - Drift, Totnes
Sunday 18th - Sound Knowledge, Marlborough
Tuesday 20th - Pie&Vinyl, Portsmouth
Wednesday 21st - Venus Vinyl, Norwich
Thursday 22nd - Jumbo, Leeds // l

Our guy, the effusive and downright offensively charming song singer and seducer, William Doyle, visits some of the great record stores of the U.K. next week in celebration of the release of his new album, Springs Eternal. The deal is a fair one in a world that has so very few of them: pre-order the record from one of the respective retailers and they’ll grant you entry to the show. Rock on, we must, albeit in a stripped back, intimate capacity //

The Umbrellas - Fairweather Friend - new LP out today!

There’s a not insignificant superstar quality to the way The Umbrellas carry themselves - the hair; the styling; the girl-boy vocal trade off of the soaring live shows - and with it the sense of a markedly high ceiling, the poster children of the new Bay Area scene. Fairweather Friend delivers wholesale on that promise, a marriage of astute influences (Orange Juice, Beat Happening, The Pastels, Shop Assistants, Tiger Trap) and committed and convincing performance: guitars that chime and bounce, drums that race forward as if in fear of the song beating them to the end, lyrics that map that eternal intersecting territory of the melancholic and the joyous, real high grade dancing-with-a-broken-heart desire all up on show. Available on all digital platforms, CD and two different colour vinyl pressings. //

blue vinyl press - edition of 250

There are only great RP&Ps records. That we already know. And yet somehow this one hits especially hard. Too close to home and too close to the bone, perhaps? Trace the arc in this one. You’ll find a rare kind of intimate self-reflection/determination. Magic, if it weren’t so real. //

The Reds, Pinks & Purples
Unwishing Well
out 12th April

Crystalizing the tragic self-celebrating kingdoms of fortunate failures, false heroes, music press deities of limitless deceit, hometown dive gods and humanity in the grips of all its romanticized wonder and woe — DIY pop titans The Reds, Pinks & Purples take aim at the threads of hope with untethered abandon on their new album, Unwishing Well. Spanning ten entirely new gem-like tunes, it’s yet another exhibition of Glenn Donaldson’s flawless mastery of intimate - yet expansive - downcast pop. Listen to the lead single, ‘Your Worst Song Is Your Greatest Hit’ now.

Unwishing Well is out 12th April, in partnership with Slumberland. Available on all digital formats, CD and two LP formats, including a blue vinyl edition of 250 available only via Bandcamp/Tough Love and World of Echo. Pre-order available now //

New Umbrellas! ‘Gone’ is the final single to be issued ahead of the release of new album, Fairweather Friend, on 27th January. 100mph dual-vocal jangle pop bliss! Stream/share/pre-order now as you desire.

“Gone talks about feeling stuck on trivial matters and chasing escapism to cope, even though you might not know what you’re looking for/what will help you yet” the band explain. “The song never really finds an answer to the question of what to do when you’re feeling stuck, but it does build some acceptance of the feeling, making the “rut” feel all the more human and universal. We’re excited to add this song to our live set, since it’s one of our more power-pop songs and we think it really highlights Keith’s heroic drumming stylings and Matt/Morgan’s duo harmonious vocals.” -The Umbrellas

That was our 2023, resplendent with some of our most treasured releases of all time. And we even oversaw a logo change (did anyone notice?). More on that in the new year.

For now, one final glance back to appreciate the past twelve months and then forwards into the new year (when we’ll be hitting the ground running with The Umbrellas and William Doyle albums arriving early doors, and two big announcements in January). Thanks for everything, onwards >>>

William Doyle today announces his new album Springs Eternal,to be released on February 16th. Listen to the new single, 'Relentless Melt', the second song to be made available from the record following the release of 'Surrender Yourself' last month.

Serving up art-pop for the anthropocene, Springs Eternal is the Mercury-nominated, critically acclaimed artist William Doyle’s most ambitious and most playful creation to date. Taking a panoramic view of the ecstasies and agonies of life in the 2020s, the record asks how we exist as fragile flesh and blood – our hearts beating and our minds racing – in an unprecedented, almost unimaginable time of runaway climate destruction and technological expansion.

Springs Eternal is released on 16th February and is available digitally, on CD and in two different vinyl editions - blue vinyl with the standard orange artwork, and on orange vinyl with limited edition blue artwork. Artwork and design by Jon Vallance.

Empty Country, the project of musician Joseph D'Agostino (formerly Cymbals Eat Guitars), officially return today with the release of their second record, Empty Country II. D’Agostino has detailed this record as him being ‘radically himself’ and there’s an unavoidable heart-on-sleeve testifying at the core of these songs. A shouting into the void. Or from the void. From the precipice, about The End, because it’s the last - only - thing left to do. 'Erlking' concludes with the simply breathtaking line, ‘It’s a little late to be afraid’, providing an indubitable axiom for our times as well as perfectly encapsulating the spirit of a Great American record that arrives at just the moment when such a concept is in its death throes. And so we have it, The Last Great American Record. Where an explosion and a star might be the same dreaded thing.
Empty Country II is available digitally, on CD, a pink vinyl dbl LP (edition of 450) and as a deluxe pink vinyl dbl LP package containing a book and cassette of the written and audio version of D’Agostino’s short story, Basilisk, or: Pearl Practices Guitar and Hallucinates the Future (edition of 50). The latter is only available via the Tough Love online shop or Bandcamp. //

“After many false starts and missteps, in music and in life in general, I am coming to the UK to (affectionately) haunt your pubs and clubs with my admittedly tragic songs. I will be bringing an incredibly empathetic rock band, that will more than impress you. Thanks for buying up all the vinyl and making this project what it is: a contender, maybe? Could be. Brush up on the lyrics and see you down in front.” - Glenn Donaldson

Babydoll, the fifth Rat Columns album, is out today. Babydoll seems to mark a return to a murkier, dirgier Rat Columns format. Distortion is fetishized again and many small amplifiers were tortured in the album's production. Tempos have drifted down and the lyrical concerns move ever inward, in an inverse bloom. The mood is dour, introspective, circular, the songs long, and short attention spans are neglected. In all these respects, it is a classic Rat Columns record. Because all Rat Columns records are classic records.

Babydoll is available on all digital platforms and on two different vinyl formats - cream vinyl (edition of 250) and black vinyl with a bonus two-track 7" (edition of 250). //
