Hubert Humka - Eternal U

2023 - BLOW UP PRESS
Numbered edition of 550 copies.

Some books you just have to see and handle. You have to smell them and run your fingers over the papers.

I had been aware of Eternal U for some time but to be honest, I didn’t “get it”.
A book which celebrates the natural cemeteries that forests can become?
I understood it, I just didn’t “get it”.

Until I finally got the chance to meet up with Grzegorz and Aneta from BLOW UP PRESS earlier this year.
At that point I was able to handle the book and properly look at it for the first time.
Printed in muted tones on recycled papers, the colours and textures - and yes - the smell (book people understand) combined with the fascinating back story, completely won me over.

“Sorry, we didn’t have any signed copies to bring along”.

Mission accomplished Grzegorz and I couldn’t be happier to recommend this fascinating, textural delight of a book.

Please, do not approach with caution.
Eternal U is not the domain of darkness and grief, rather a celebration of lives lived and what is to come.

“Imagine that after death you will become a tree, part of the forest, unlimited and free energy. A lively monument will grow on you.

Eternal U is a story about the so-called good death and eternity. Through photographs of forests being natural cemeteries where the dead are buried in biodegradable urns or coffins, marked only with a previously selected tree, Humka shows a certain way of thinking about us as a code, an immortal chain of some larger universe. During life, we all draw from it, to later give it a part of ourselves:

“I like to think that the roots of these trees, drawing from the people buried under them, include them in their existence, that nothing ends, that it is only our human self that changes. We become a tree, a forest, part of something bigger that reaches beyond us. We connect with the universe, we become infinite - says Hubert.”

Thank you 💚

(PL) / Eternal U
GOLD in Book Layout

The jury congratulates the author for an innovative way of presenting a personal project on such complex topics as death and eternity in connection to the forest and nature. The book features high-quality photographs that create surprising spreads and encourage reflection. Typography, when used, is embossed rather than printed, thus serving as another vehicle for the sustainability argument. Additionally, the book invites reflection on sustainability through its original and honest paper choices, which complement the use of artistic nature pictures. Despite the technical difficulties involved, the book is impeccably produced to the highest standards.

Would you like to improve your visual narration skills? Then this is something for 🫵🏻!

News from :

Kranj Foto Fest is bringing the renowned publisher BLOW UP PRESS to Kranj for a two-day intensive workshop on photobook sequencing, with the editors Aneta Kowalczyk and Grzegorz Kosmala. During the workshop 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤, you will develop the skills in sequencing your own photographic project, which is the most important thing to do before making a photobook. You will learn how to tell a story with images, how to present it to a potential publisher, and how to work in cooperation with graphic designers and publishing houses. Together with the editors, you will set the main framework for your photographic projects.

“Properly made sequencing of images in a photobook is also important because it is the only place where the artist has full control over the viewer’s movement.” – Aneta Kowalczyk and Grzegorz Kosmala.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧: August 22-23, 10:00 to 17:00, during the Opening Week of Kranj Foto Fest 2024, Kranj, Slovenia.

For more info on how to apply, follow this link 👉 https://kranjfotofest.org/en/workshop-bup/ and then send your application to [email protected] under the subject Workshop BUP.

We will choose up to 10 participants to take part in this workshop. The participation fee for the workshop (in case you are selected) is 150 EUR.

09/06/2024

Today is the day to announce the winner of this year's edition of BUP Book Award contest. The project submitted by the main prize winner will turn into a real photobook. Who is this?

🥁🥁🥁

Ladies and gentlemen, the winner is...

Marcos Rico (ES) with a project titled RAHASIA! 💥💥💥

Our congratulations! 👏👏👏

RAHASIA (secret in Indonesian) explores the reality of the Muslim homosexual community in Indonesia. The project focuses on the moral dilemma faced by this group as their sexual condition calls into question their own Islamic beliefs. Growing up in a system where you can't say who you really are puts them in a constant situation of negotiation between their life and a hostile environment. They must follow their religion and respect their family to maintain their honor. These complexities make it difficult for them to come out as gay.

For us, RAHASIA by Marcos Rico is a perfect example of how difficult topics can be presented in a visually stunning way. Beautifully composed images contradict the situation of the project's characters. Man versus a system motivated by religion. Love versus beliefs. Can the BLOW UP PRESS motto be better illustrated?

We would like to thank all participants of the 5th edition of our contest. We were impressed by your submissions, the topics you covered and power of their messages. We also thank our jurors: Mireia Alises (ES), Laura Carbonell (CO), Ania Nałęcka-Milach (PL), Manuel Sigrist (CH), Douglas Stockdale (US) and Robin Titchener (GB). You had a very difficult task to complete, but you handled it brilliantly.

Our story

Established in 2012, BLOW UP PRESS is a boutique publishing house focused on contemporary photography. Our aim is to show unique photo/visual art projects in a form of book. At the beginning we were just online publisher but in 2016 we switched entirely to paper as the best and the only possible medium for photography. Our publications (books and magazine) follow the motto: WHEN THE STORY MATTERS. We don’t want to produce one-time-seen books. We want to create thoughts provoking art objects making people to return.
