Thank you Emese Mucsi and 10x10 Photobooks for pointing at our book! We are very excited to be part of this exhibition. Long live, photobooks!

If in Budapest, Hungary till February 2, make sure to visit The Most Exciting Photobooks of the Central and Eastern Europe Region exhibition in the Capa Központ!

Reposted from
Hi again, it is and I continue my photo book top list of the Eastern European pool. 🌳

I don’t know about you, but every time I see a little bird or a fragile petite flower, I get a huge positive vibe that it’s good to be alive because there are such things on Earth. The herbarium is also part of a synthesizing universal genre that seeks to measure the world, such as encyclopedias and atlases. Gerhes’s ATLAS includes a ‘HERBARIA’ chapter, while other authors have dedicated separate volumes to this heart-warming subject. Not necessarily because of the popularity of flora as a phenomenon, but because of the special aspects that link them to the mysterious procedures related to photography. An analog photograph is just like a pressed plant from the garden: light-sensitive at first, flattened and eventually dried out. In the darkness under the earth, just as when photographs are developed, a process is taking place, a transformation that cannot be disturbed. Then the shoots push up, and later the blossoming flowers incite joy in those looking at them, and the foliage of trees and bushes brings relief and comfort. After all, herbarium and photography condense the spatial world into two dimensions.

Keeping this poetic tone, let’s take a look at the book Eternal U (2023) by Polish artist Hubert Humka, which gives a twist to this metaphor, presenting the forest as a place of eternal circulation and remembrance. The book has been produced on the finest paper and with a design that pushes the boundaries of the book medium, thanks to a collaboration with the publisher BLOW UP PRESS. “In each of these places, the forest itself, giving eternal rest to the people buried there, was the most important element for me.” – says Hubert Humka.

If in Paris, you can still visit the DAME GULIZAR AND OTHER LOVE STORIES exhibition by Rebecca Topakian at delpire & co. The exhibition is open till January 18. Hurry up!

News from delpire & co:

Suddenly, winter has become beautiful!
Thank you Tipi Bookshop ♥️

Saturday starts with an S for Sloooow documentary work and an open question;
Can we ever truly know the desires and agency of those who came before us, or do we inevitably fill their silences with our own interpretations?

we have put online our take on Rebecca Topakian’s book, published by the great duo behind BLOW UP PRESS .

Topakian’s work challenges us to reconsider how we inherit, retell, and reshape family histories. Her focus on Gulizar’s untold perspective sparks broader questions about how patriarchal traditions influence historical narratives, and whether art can serve as a tool for reclaiming agency across time. By intertwining personal and national mythologies, her project invites viewers to reflect not just on the stories they inherit, but also on how they choose to pass them on.

NARRATIVA | Livros do ano

Em 2024, decidimos investir significativamente na nossa biblioteca para dar resposta à procura crescente de quem nos visita.

Dame Gulizar and Other Love Stories – Rebecca Topakian
Blow Up Press, 2024

Once upon a time, in distant Constantinople, there lived Hadji Garabet Kevork Topakian, a well-known and respected producer of basturma, considered by many to be the best in the city. Garabet led a lonely life until one day he fell deeply in love with the beautiful and young Gulizar, who – to his joy – reciprocated his feeling. They were an adorable couple. Unfortunately, their love was opposed by Gulizar’s parents, for whom Garabet was too boorish. Unable to come to terms with the loss of his beloved, one frosty night he snuck on horseback to her bedroom window. Without hesitating for long, Gulizar threw herself into her lover’s arms and together they left for Constantinople to get married and live happily ever after. Distant Ararat, illuminated by moonlight, was the only witness to this kidnapping…

For ‘Dame Gulizar and Other Love Stories’, Rebecca Topakian’s starting point is the unique story of her Armenian family, who lived in Turkey before her grandfather emigrated to France. This story is the love of her great-grandparents – Garabed and Gulizar.

Topakian explored this part of her identity by choosing fiction and mythology. Bearing the love story of her ancestors in mind while she traveled and lived in Armenia, desire became the thread of this project: it is a desire for earth, ground, identity, but also for the other’s body acting almost as a mirror.

The book includes her own pictures mixed with her family archives, establishing a link between past and present. And the photographs printed on transparent paper symbolically put her great-grandparents back to the land they belong to, offering an intimate and impressionistic portrait of Armenia.

Our story

Established in 2012, BLOW UP PRESS is a boutique publishing house focused on contemporary photography. Our aim is to show unique photo/visual art projects in a form of book. At the beginning we were just online publisher but in 2016 we switched entirely to paper as the best and the only possible medium for photography. Our publications (books and magazine) follow the motto: WHEN THE STORY MATTERS. We don’t want to produce one-time-seen books. We want to create thoughts provoking art objects making people to return.
