Read this one: ALLERGIC TO WONDER

This might be my favorite answer. Be seeing you. Keep watching the skies.

It's almost over, he lied: THE MIGHTY MIGHTY WONDERTONES

Wonderful Labs was effectively closed between 2005 and 2012. This is the truth. I realize now, today, that this is also me talking about my depression.

It's almost over, he lied: CRYING OVER WONDER

This is quite good up until the end, where I make a shocking statement for cheap laughs. I think I was just jealous of his relationship with Laurie Anderson.

It's almost over, he lied: CRANBERRY WONDER

This one is just goofy nonsense, but it’s stylish goofy nonsense. I still don’t understand the question, other than the Buckaroo Banzai bit. Still, any old excuse to talk about the Beatles.

It's almost over, he lied: ME AND BOBBY MCWONDER

You may have noticed, if you’re a detail-oriented obsessive that is likely to stalk and murder me, that some of these reprints are from the 2012-2013 period where we attempted to revive the Labs on Tumblr. Not many people bit, but it did yield a few gems.

It's almost over, he lied: FAHRENHEIT FOUR FIFTY WONDER

Wordplay, innuendo, and no real advice. It’s another classic from the team that brought you nothing much of anything ever.

It's almost over, he lied: THE CRUNCH OF WONDER

I’m still not sure the complicated clever gag works in this one, but I’m tickled by the attempts to avoid offending one of the crew, and the tag line is ace.

It's almost over, he lied: THE AXL OF WONDER

And as we wind things up in the “Wonderful Labs mythology” retrospective, I can now republish the ones that mention Mister Monkey. I really loved that little guy.

It's almost over, he lied: Once Again We Return

This one already exists as a static page on this site, but here it is in chronological context: I wrote the Potrzebie business, took a month to write half a novel, and then came back to the column with a flourish. It’s one of my favorite statements of purpose for the whole project.

It's almost over, he lied: What the Mister Wrote

As reigning king of the indulgent run-on sentence, I shared the opening blather from the first Wonder novel (July 2003) with the column’s readers, and now inflict the same upon you. It’s truly overdone and unnecessary. But I mean, if you’re into wicked wordy homages to the opening of Homer’s...

Did you enjoy it?: The Bogus Journey of Dark and Wonder

So I gave up the island conceit and jumped into writing another book. (The characters got as far as my version of Hell, where we would’ve confronted a friend, but I hate confrontation so.) When the column resumed regular business, the location snapped back to Wonderful Labs without explanation. St...

Save it for later: The Lady or The Wonder

In case the picture is not clear, our merry band is leading off the island like a baseball metaphor. The idea was to always have Mister Monkey answer with Shakespeare quotes. I don’t know if I stuck to that.

Save it for later: The Transgressions of Power and Wonder

Well, let’s call this one Problematic. The set-up is fine. It’s out of nowhere, but it’s better than another “everything is fine here” intro. The question and answer is… woo. I’m sure it all meant something different at the time to people in the know.

Save it for later: The Correction of Error and Wonder

I want to repeat that I had not actually read Moby-Dick by this point. I don’t know how that apt reference drifted back in time. There’s actually something to the answer to query in this one. Something I needed to tell myself in the future (now).

Save it for later: A World of Hurt and Wonder

Save it for later: A World of Hurt and Wonder

Nothing really happens - there’s a bit of world-building (I couldn’t tell you now if it was a metaphor for anything), there’s some more tap dancing about the broken computer, and something that tries to be funny about VR gaming. Then Mister Dark wanders in to make the whole business worthwhile...

Save it for later: The Land of Milk and Wonder

The important bit here is that I knew Johnny Mozart was depressed in 2003. At last revision the book was titled The Wonder and remains unfinished.

Save it for later: A Return to the Lost and Wonder

Save it for later: A Return to the Lost and Wonder

Old me has started to pad out the intro, I can see. It’s my desire to write an entire magazine but my hook is still this Question Column. Everything yearns to find its shape. If I could’ve answered the Query portion these days, I would have made much of DSM V VS ASMR.

Save it for later: The Taste of Silver and Wonder

Two things about this one: 1) It’s clear that I’m receiving new emails somehow, but I won’t let go of the island conceit until I’ve got access to my old inbox. Shame I never made a joke about needing a Treasure IMAP. 2) There’s an allusion to Doctor Who in the sign off and I didn't even kn...

Save it for later: A Drink of Moonlight and Wonder

Oh, I can tread water with the best of them. Indeed, I only tread the best water. Seriously, I love the opening on this. I love the aching tension between the real, the real, and the real. It’s an Escher Sketch.

Another picture post! Why? I do not recall! But please enjoy this tour of my desk in 2003, and the many toys thereon.

Save it for later: The Rumble of Thunder and Wonder

Save it for later: The Rumble of Thunder and Wonder

The trick to finding out what you didn’t know you already knew is to build a character that always has to have an answer for everything, then disguise yourself as another character to ask the hard ones. It’s like a Perpetual Notion Machine.

Save it for later: A Change in the Weather and Wonder

Save it for later: A Change in the Weather and Wonder

Poor old Mister Wonderful. The strain of writing propaganda postcards for his made-up paradise started to get to him after all.

Save it for later: A Dance of Masks and Wonder

I don’t know why I never edited the questions people wrote. It just seemed like part of the challenge.

Save it for later: The Legend of Sleep and Wonder

Save it for later: The Legend of Sleep and Wonder

An amusing attempt at an origin story for some of our players, only slightly marred by the fact I would re-use the best gag a year later and it’s already been reprinted in this archive . Sigh.

Do they still make Folger’s Crystals? I sure hope so because I don’t want to have to find another link today.
