Happy Birthday to the baby, Naomi Grace! She is a 2nd kid to the core, translation she is equal parts exuberant and passionate 🤪
She keeps you on your toes as you never know what deep or random question she might ask or what will come out of her mouth.
At present she wants to be baker AND an engineer and I have full confidence she can be both. Can’t wait to see how that turns out, but I’m loving getting to watch her learn, love, and play right now.

It was on May 31 when we first met Becks. It was pouring down rain yet we still went to a event. The girls fell in love with her and kinda liked her too 😉
It took some time, conversations, and preparations but we finally made it official and adopted her a couple weeks ago.
Real talk her name was Becky Sue and that just wasn’t gonna work for me, thus it’s Becks.

Ok not literally in this moment.
I’m taking a few weeks off from the pod to recharge the batteries and get some inspiration.

If you’ve listened to the podcast, you know one of the hot-seat questions is, “What are you consuming right now?” I love this question because there’s lots of info/material/media that you HAVE to take in. This question is about what you WANT to take in.
I enjoy learning what books, shows and podcasts the guests are into because it gives me a bit of an insight into their interests and even what inspires them.
As I invite my guests to share, I’ll be sharing, and I invite you to share what you’re consuming!
Just finished this book and I really enjoyed it! So real and raw. Anyone else read it?

Tattoos have intrigued me since I was little, even though growing up they were definitely more taboo than they are now.
I’ve got a couple, but I’ve never had anything like this. This unique piece represents my daughters. For the longest time, we’ve called Charlotte “Char-bear” and Naomi “Na-bird.” I wanted the scenery around them to illustrate the natural state and its beauty.
Shoutout to the incredibly talented and kind AJ for delivering a badass piece of art. Initially, I didn’t choose him and he didn’t choose me, but it all worked out. Nine grueling hours later his work was done.
Just so we’re clear: I LOVE this piece, it hurt like hell, it was worth it, and when I’m ready for the next one, I’m coming back to my Colombian brother.

Before Black History Month ends, I wanted to share a piece of what this month means to me. It obviously means celebrating heroes like MLK, Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, and Jesse Owens for their contributions. It also means learning more about people like Carter G. Woodson, Guion Bluford, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Jack Johnson who maybe didn’t get as much attention in our history books. (If you don’t know those names, give them a Google.)

Finally, it means celebrating those role models, barrier breakers, and legends from our community. For me, my dad is on that list. He grew up here and went to Pine Street (the Conway school for blacks) from K-11 but completed his senior year in Conway Public Schools after integration. I could not imagine the nerves, confidence, fear, and range of other emotions that came with that transition.

I’m thankful for him and many others who paved the way for me right here in Conway.

And if I’m gonna be outside in Arkansas it’s very likely I’ll be rocking a shirt from my people

This smile says a lot more than you might think. This smile only surfaced after a few tears and some self-doubt. Naomi is afraid of heights and just couldn't talk herself into climbing up this thing.

Despite the cheering from me, her big sister, and a random dad and his little boy, it just wasn't happening. After a little time with no prodding by any of the peanut gallery previously mentioned, she went to the bottom and climbed up the web all by herself. I could not have been prouder and seriously couldn't get my phone out fast enough to take the picture. I was fortunate to snap this one and I got to enjoy her climb up the web several more times after that. Here's the deal, there are times when our kids face these challenges, both great and small. For me, one of the most satisfying moments of parenthood is seeing them conquer them.

Todd Cate , co-creator and co-host of the now-retired Black Dude White Dude, a long-time friend and weight-loss expert pulls a chair, and just like that, the band was together again. Todd and I recounted the good ole days of BDWD and quickly launched into a variety of topics. The old-school BDWD banter was in full effect as we talked about the benefits of Dry January, painful small talk, depression, the powerhouse couple that is Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, and much more.

As a dad, I want my kids to know their possibilities are endless and they can truly do anything they want. Specifically, as a dad to biracial girls, I do my best to show them examples of women and people of color in various roles and careers that have historically been only white men (no disrespect just real talk).
So when I boarded the plane and saw this pilot, I had to take a pic to show the girls. If I’m being honest, I don’t even recall her name but I guarantee my girls will remember her.
It’s real simple: representation matters.

As dry January draws to a close, I’m thankful for friends and drinks, like the ones pictured. Things tend to be a bit easier when you’ve got a person, or in this case, people, running along side of you. I appreciate all of you who “ran” with me and I’m proud of us. We endured the longest January in human history, snow days, and frigid temps.

In regard to the drink, I really do LOVE water but a tasty mocktail on occasion really hits the spot 😂

At the stroke of midnight, January will finally be over soooo I’m thinking mimosas in the morning? Who’s with me?!? 😉

Here and There airs locally on Feb. 2, but the YouTube link will be in the bio. Can’t wait to see it!

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

Whew! Reading that gives me confidence that it’s not “too late” to keep pushing for bigger things for this podcast or life, in general.
There’s a chance there’s someone reading this who is wondering if it’s too late for you and your big dream…and I’m here to say it ain’t!
Full disclosure: This is NOT my plane but it provided a cool back drop and my fit kinda matched it, so there you have it.

Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying, “everything in moderation”. And unless you’re talking about listening to this podcast, I tend to agree. 😉
Myself and a few others in my world have committed to Dry January. In essence, that just means we’ll abstain from alcohol and yes, that includes bourbon, for the entire month. Don’t worry - I’m still about drinking the bourbon and wearing the sneakers but this month I’m taking a break from the first part.

Are you participating in Dry January? How has it been so far? Tell me about it in the comments 👇🏿 so we can hold each other accountable.

Our Story

Black Dude White Dude explores a wide range of topics from the differing perspectives of two best friends. Leo Cummings III (Black Dude) and Todd Cate (White Dude) dive into the poignant and mundane—from race relations and raising their children to debates about who can do the most one-arm pushups (it’s Todd). Whether it’s back-and-forth banter between the two of them or in-depth conversations featuring invited guests from the central Arkansas area and beyond, Black Dude White Dude leaves listeners with food for thought and reasons to laugh out loud.
