After losing their final regular season game against Issaquah High School, the fastpitch softball team’s hopes of going to KingCo this season seemed to have been lost. However, their tie-breaking game against Woodinville on Monday, May 6, was a second chance to qualify. Despite a tense first half that ended with the Vikings down 0-2, they were able to gain the lead in a heated second half. Playing hard in the rain, Inglemoor came out of the last inning up 8-5, a well-fought win that qualified them for KingCo.

Inglemoor will move down one classification from 4A to 3A in the 2024-25 school year, as a result of Washington Interscholastic Activities Association classification realignment. The WIAA classifies high schools from 1B to 4A based on school enrollment. These classifications are reviewed every four years and realignment follows. The 4A classification is the highest level, including schools with combined freshmen, sophomore and junior enrollments of 1,200 or more. Inglemoor did not meet the 4A threshold with only 1,087 students. Despite lower enrollment for the past eight years, the previous superintendent, Michelle Reid, opted to keep Inglemoor in the 4A classification to maintain competition between NSD schools.

On the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, after the first sighting of a new moon, Muslims begin their observation of their holy month, Ramadan. Aside from abstaining from food and drink from pre-dawn hours to sunset, Ramadan is also a month where Muslims focus on building, strengthening or reconnecting with their faith. Nordic followed two iftars, the dinner at sunset, each sponsored by a Muslim Student Association through a typical Ramadan evening.

Tolo is a spring dance — often casual or semiformal — that many schools organize to boost student morale and challenge traditional gender roles. It’s most popular in the Pacific Northwest, originating from the University of Washington’s Tolo club, the name of which comes from the Chinook word for success and achievement. Some NSD schools hold three dances — homecoming, a spring dance or winter formal and prom — but aside from the spring dance in 2023, Inglemoor ASB has only sponsored homecoming and prom since at least 2018. The lack of interest in school dances affects student morale and social skills. To create a real sense of school spirit and limit isolation, schools should create engaging dances for students to socialize in-person outside of school hours.

There have been more mass shootings than days passed this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an event where four or more people are shot or killed at one location at roughly the same time. Over half of these 74 tragic incidents occurred at schools, resulting in a total of 14 deaths and 26 injuries.

“Everybody’s just pushing off ‘Oh, it’s not gonna happen to me, it’s not gonna happen to me,’ but the threat isn’t seen as big as it is because many haven’t really realized the weight of gun violence,” Arrth Mittal (he/him) said. “People are just pushing it away.”

Strong El Niño weather patterns resulted in an even warmer and rainier winter for the Pacific Northwest this year. Although these patterns affect weather globally, they have varying effects in different regions. The warmer weather during El Niño years generally means less precipitation as snow and more as rain for the Pacific Northwest.
