On Nov. 22, the foundation partnered with Smith’s Food and Drug stores and Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz to provide holiday dinners to some ecstatic and grateful children. The event took place at Valley Junior High where turkey and other holiday essentials were distributed.

The Granite Education Foundation, the district’s philanthropic organization, helped distribute holiday meals to families with some help from notable guests.

In 2015, Zions Bank President and CEO A. Scott Anderson founded the Women’s Leadership Institute, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to making Utah a better place for women. At an awards ceremony on Oct. 13, Anderson was presented with the inaugural Women’s Leadership Institute A. Scott Anderson Ally Award, named after him to honor his advocacy for women.

More than 60 organizations were recognized by the Women’s Leadership Institute for their efforts to encourage women in leadership roles.

The nonprofit serves more than 1,000 Navajo elders over the age of 75 by providing food, fabric, firewood and basic supplies.

Through the Adopt-A-Native-Elder program, hundreds of elders from the Navajo Nation receive much-needed food, firewood and essentials.

Although Utah’s poverty rate is one of the lowest in the nation, thousands of children in the state grow up in intergenerational poverty. More than 70% of children growing up in IGP are under 10 years old, and women have much higher odds of struggling with poverty than men.

Circles Salt Lake helps people break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by connecting them to allies who help them move forward.

If someone had told 10-year-old Desange Kuenihira that she’d be living in America, graduating from college and starting a nonprofit to help people in Uganda, she would never have believed it. But now at 21, Kuenihira has accomplished all of that and is taking the next steps on her journey.

On Dec. 10 morning, between 9 a.m. and noon, Cottonwood PTA will accept donations for the school’s Christmas Extravaganza, which provides items for students to give to family members, said Jennifer Young, who is on the Cottonwood PTA planning committee. Donations can be dropped off at Cottonwood High, 5715 S. 1300 East.

“We love that this is a huge community event, people helping other people, giving so these students can have a great Christmas,” said a Cottonwood High School PTA organizer about the upcoming need for donations for the annual Christmas Extravaganza.

Coming into a concert at South Salt Lake’s Center for Spiritual Living, with the one-woman act dubbed as a cross between Joan Baez, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Tina Fey, one may have thoughts circling in their head of what to expect.

“This is what I want to do. I want to create music and art that gives people this feeling of goosebumps,” says singer/songwriter Celia Farran who performed in South Salt Lake.

Thousands of Granite School District students take Spanish classes every year. For many, it’s their first insight into not just the language but also the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Hispanic Heritage Month in September and October gives teachers an opportunity to show their students how culture and language are entwined.

Hispanic Heritage Month is an official U.S. holiday that began in 1968, and it’s not just for those with Hispanic heritage.

On Aug. 20, the Columbus Center auditorium held the annual Nepali Women’s Festival—teej.

The event was equipped with an ample amount of food and activities, ranging from Nepalese traditional dancing to singing, prayer and theatre performances.

The festival welcomes the monsoon season in India and is celebrated by dancing and singing.

On Aug. 19, staff at the Granite Library, 3331 S. 500 East, distributed over 400 pairs of shoes, as well as books, for children from low-income families.

Like other shelters in the state, the SSL location is overflowing with pets who have been returned, lost or abandoned. The shelter is at capacity with 22 dogs, 16 adult cats and 11 kittens.

Although birthed in Brazil in the early 16th century, a martial art form known as capoeira has been sweeping the interest of many South Salt Lake locals with its engaging acrobatic, dance-like style.

The Salt Lake Institute for Culinary Education sponsors the first-ever Great Summer cookoff for Promise SSL and Salt Lake County Youth Services participants. Team Super Chefs won the competition.

South Salt Lake may be a long way from Brazil, but that didn’t stop nearly 100 locals from attending Festa Junina, the Brazilian June Harvest Festival on June 18 at Shades Brewing in South Salt Lake.

The Brazilian celebration of the harvest brought dancing, food and music to those living in the northern hemisphere.

The South Salt Lake City Council passed a tentative budget that includes a property tax increase, which automatically triggers a 'Truth in Taxation' hearing later this summer.

After a public hearing the week before, the South Salt Lake City Council rejects the Certified Tax Rate and passes tentative interim budgets. They will be place until a Truth in Taxation hearing is held Aug. 9.

Salt Lake County Emergency Management (SLCo EM) directed a Joint Information Center (JIC) functional exercise on May 12. The exercise brought together 23 Public Information Officers (PIO) from various agencies across Salt Lake Valley.

The Crossroads Urban Center operates as an emergency food pantry in Salt Lake and has many programs, including the Wasatch Community Gardens program, which has been around since before 1989 and has been growing dramatically since.
