Immigration support has been a core focus for Amani Family Services for nearly two decades.

As immigrants and refugees continued to settle in Fort Wayne, Amani Family Services received calls from employers who had questions about the status of foreign-born employees, how to hire people to sustain the workforce, and more. At the time, Amani had no specific resources for immigration and naturalization, but people reached out to them because they had a reputation in the community for serving refugees.

Through a series of community conversations, it became clear that Amani Family Services was best suited to launch a naturalization and legal assistance (NALA) program due to its existing reputation in the community.

The NALA program soft-launched in November of 2024, followed by the official grand opening in February of this year.

It can help immigrants and refugees obtain work permits or green cards, petition for family members to come to the country, or renew documentation. It can also reduce barriers on the pathway to citizenship through the naturalization classes offered to clients.

By directing immigrants toward pathways for long-term success, a naturalization and legal assistance program can increase stability for local families and help maintain a strong economy.

Did you know both Fort Wayne and Allen County are considered CDFI deserts?

Community Development Financial Institutions, also known as CDFIs, play a role in increasing financial stability and growth.

Read about it here:

“We have parts of the population here in Fort Wayne that have been systematically left behind — and this is not a new issue, but we could come up with new solutions.”

Have you heard of the organization Downtown Fort Wayne, but aren't sure what they do? We explore their work here:

“The main thing, in my opinion, would be one single voice that has one mission — that is to concentrate and make sure that we’re continuing to develop, protect and advocate for our downtown.”

Two artists have recently brought their unique visions and vibrant colors to high-traffic spaces, helping to write the city’s next chapter on this front.

"My experience thus far has been [that] people generally have a pretty open mind towards art, especially in the Midwest. I find people there are really kind of welcoming and really into community engagement-style projects."

The young professionals group meets at least twice a month, encouraging individuals aged 19-40 to become more involved in their communities and engage in professional development, as well as volunteer work.

The member-driven organization does not currently require annual dues, and many of its events are free. They’re also typically kid-friendly, so members don’t have to find a babysitter, working around busy family schedules.

Partnering with local organizations and leaders, Young Professionals of Wabash County hosts events such as a Lunch and Learn series, Brunch and Ballots events, blood drives, and river cleanups.

“I think this young professionals group is good because it shows you many different ways to be involved, so you can find your niche or what you’re most passionate about.”
