Hi, everyone.

Due to a glitch on Facebook's end, that they provided NO HELP in resolving, I've been locked out of the BANG Magazine account for over a year and have not been able to make posts. If you sent me a message between Fall 2019 and now, I didn't respond because I literally couldn't read it. (My inbox STILL isn't working, so I can't read the messages now either.)

The fact that I'm making a post NOW doesn't mean Facebook finally helped me, it means they remodeled their site code a second time and the glitch was erased as a side-effect. As for BANG itself, there wasn't an issue in 2020 for two reasons: the obvious one (pandemic) and the fact that my distributor pulled out of the business a few weeks before the pandemic started. Trying to find a new one under these conditions is...kinda hard.

If you think you fit the bill, let me know. You must have a car, the ability to tote a large number of papers around Portland and hit over 100 drop sites, and some kind of storage area the papers can be delivered to (I have none of these things and must rely on you). Once BANG has a distributor working for us again, the vaccine becomes widespread, and small businesses start making enough revenue to advertise once more, we can finally start the engine back up. I would like to get an issue out within 2021 if possible.

There's a line in the latest BANG about GLOW getting cancelled at three seasons. At the time I wrote it, Season 3 was months away. But due to how long the darn process takes, the issue wound up hitting the streets during the exact same weekend Season 3 premiered. Now the run is nearing the end of its cycle and copies are dwindling to nothing, and Season 4 of GLOW was just announced by Netflix. Crazy bit of timing there. The line managed to escape being dated, but just barely.

Also, I didn't think Season 3 of GLOW was very good.

Today P***y the Elephant died, making Bil Schonely the only living celebrity survivor of Pre-Hipster Portland. Sad, that. This is, currently, the only P***y news story available in the Known FPO Archives, but I’m sure there are others somewhere and I’m certain they’re all a lot like this. You only ever saw P***y when it was his birthday, because pachyderms just don’t do anything newsworthy.

About a day before this issue was completed, an artist for Steven Universe was driven out of social media due to death threats from Tumblr shippers, furious that two characters on the show weren't in a relationship yet and IT WAS HER FAULT for SABOTAGING THEIR LOVE. Originally page 24 just ended with the "brains" panel, but I had to have Vess read one more letter. She, of course, has a different reaction.

Another late addition: Mulberry's "Stranger Things" pajamas. I started watching the show about two weeks before deadline. If it didn't exist, this issue would have come out at least three days earlier.

You’d hope that fans of Steven Universe—which might be the most progressive kids’ show ever created, up to and including starring a character who’s the living embodiment of a healthy romantic relationship between two women—would be able to take the show’s lessons of empathy to heart. Ordinarily I poke and stab without remorse, but in the case of the Erika Moen reference on page 5, I got her blessing first, because Erika is such a nice person that I didn't want to risk offending her.

Of course, she might not remember because that was two years ago, back when the gag was supposed to appear in BANG #10. This was part of the Comcast attack -- Comcast was supposed to interrupt the comic, not Vess, and then take over everything. You turned the page and the next two pages were nothing but Comcast ads and cartoons glorifying the company. You turned the page again and, a la Gremlins 2, Hulk Hogan showed up and threatened Comcast into backing down, restoring things to normal.

And that really is all of that particular Moen strip I can print. If you look closely, you can see the top half of the word "vi****or."

To all those who guessed that gentrification was going to be the subject of the next BANG issue, congratulations. You win nothing, because it wasn't hard to guess.

Normally the cover is completed mid-production, but this time it turned out to be the very last thing made. Some of the characters on this cover appear in the issue and they were being redesigned up to the last minute.

I was worried about this cover because "RUINED" is such a loaded word, but then I realized the fact that it blames the WESEN for Portland's problems means only a complete idiot would take it seriously. Now my worries have shifted to the drawing of Bitsie Tuloch that appears in the lower right corner. If she walks by and sees that she might not be happy about it.

But I can't cut it. It's hilarious.

As of the release of the next issue, BANG The Entertainment Paper will become BANG Magazine. The reasons for this are several:

1) It's what people keep calling it anyway
2) It's easier to say than "BANG THE ENTERTAINMENT PAPER," which was seriously the company name until now
3) It's also easier to remember

Right now it hasn't been decided whether "magazine" will be part of the logo when the April issue goes to press, or if it'll just say "BANG!" However, the stickers on the curbside boxes will remain the same, as "THE ENTERTAINMENT PAPER" is still a good way to describe BANG for newcomers. (Also we don't have the budget to change them all, so there's that.)

There will be a new issue very soon. Stay tuned in a few days for the cover image as it's completed.

In the 1960’s Portland experienced explosive growth and attempted to put a cap on it. Interesting back then, a thousand times more relevant today, here is Portland’s legendary anti-tourism campaign and the results.

Also note how the sagging Portland of 1982 would have given anything to attract that growth back. Something to think about the next time you see 10,000 condos going up on one lot.
