Martha here! I recently finished reading The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler. 📖

It was first published in 2004, so it's a throwback, and there were some parts where it certainly felt like I was in the early 2000s.

It's a witty book focused on a group of friends who are making their way through Jane Austen's novels. Throughout the book, we get glimpses into the background and history of each character, snapshots of defining moments that shape them into the people they are in their present day. Fowler weaves their stories together cleverly, mimicking the social commentary we see in Austen novels.
There's love and loss, displays of great friendship and betrayal. And everything is tied up neatly in the end. 🥰

This book is shelved as general fiction or women's fiction. The central reading doorway is character.

Liz loves this book, and I thought it was pretty good, but I didn't love it. This makes sense since Liz is a character reader, and I'm more of a story reader! I highly recommend listening to the Bonus episode if you haven't yet. Once you know which reading doorway you prefer, it can help make your reading experiences so much better, or at least help you understand why you might not like a book that your friend loves!

🎁 Hi Folks! We did a thing and made a very bookish ABA gift guide. If you are considering gifting your loved ones a book this year, our guide will help you match the right book with the right person.

📚 We created little reader profiles and listed each book's main reading doorway(s). The book covers are clickable. The links will take you to Goodreads, where you can read more about the book to ensure it's what you want.

You can download the free gift guide today at allbooksaloudpod.com/giftguide or go to the link in our bio!

🎙️ If you haven't already, we recommend listening to "BONUS: Could reading doorways be a substitute for genres?" and "Are books good holiday gifts?"

Read on, my friends!

I was not expecting to like this book. It was the December pick for a local book club that I'm in. Otherwise, I might never have picked it up. I heard about the movie when it was in theaters but never watched it. But guess what? I enjoyed it and gave it a very positive rating!

That's the thing about only using genres to categorize books. Sometimes, they can pigeonhole you. An assumption that "I don't like that genre" can hold you back from reading something you might otherwise enjoy.

Elizabeth and I discussed this topic at length in two episodes that I highly recommend because they set a bit of a foundation for a lot of things we discuss on the pod, "Do genres help or hinder your reading?" and "BONUS: Could reading doorways be a substitute for genres?"

But back to the book! It was written in 2011, and It's set in the year 2044. A virtual reality simulation that started as a game called the OASIS has taken over culturally. It's an escape from the real world (which is a dystopia.) You follow a young adult named Wade as he competes to find an "easter egg" hidden inside the OASIS left behind by the deceased creator. The life of whoever finds the egg will be changed forever.

It has world-building, tons of 80's pop culture references, drama, a love story, action, and video games! It can appeal broadly to a wide range of people because it has something for everyone. It's hard for me to narrow down the doorways because it has a little bit of everything, but I think the two main doorways are story and setting. So, if you like a good plot with lots of action and world-building, give Ready Player One a try!

P.S. If you haven't watched the movie, please read the book first. Just trust me on this one.

It's an escape from the real world, which is very dystopian and reminds me very eerily of what Meta could turn into. We're so glad you're here! We're All Books Aloud, two sisters who love reading in all of its forms. Elizabeth is an academic librarian by day and fiction writer by night with a lifelong obsession with all things reading and books. Martha is a busy professional who came to her love of reading later in life, but now she’s an audiobook power user.

Every two weeks, we chat about the books we’re reading and delve a little deeper into a topic related to reading or publishing. We ask questions like, “Does listening to a book count as reading?” “Are genres a good or bad thing?” and “Do you finish every book you start?” If you love reading, nerding out about books, and sassy millennial hot takes, this podcast is for you.

Our motto is, “All reading is good reading.” We believe that whether you read your books on paper, an e-reader, or listen to them, whether you like romance, fantasy, literary fiction, the classics, or any other kind of book, the more you read, the better!
