But, don't just take our word for it...the phenomenal author has this to say about it: "“This book is lovely, instructive, thought-provoking, and occasionally hard to read for all the right reasons. These stories, poems, plays, and graphic artwork are deeply important. Study these works, and you can learn an enormous amount of beneficial knowledge. I also loved the introductory essay and the questions at the end about how to create the best possible future we can make going forward.” –HELEN THORPE, author of The Newcomers, Soldier Girls and Just Like Us

The Hill published a little piece by Martin J. Smith on what he learned while writing GOING TO TRINIDAD: "I, too, was frighteningly comfortable with my ignorance, flawed assumptions, and biases. But I was wrong. It’s vital for each of us to educate ourselves — not just about gender identity, but about systemic racism, religious intolerance, or any of the other complex issues actively being used to divide Americans from one another. . . . What I learned along the way makes it impossible to tolerate the demonization of people who each day must summon the courage to simply be themselves."

Lessons learned while writing “Going to Trinidad.”

High Country News weighs in on GOING TO TRINIDAD: "As a record of institutionalized perspectives on transgender people and the dominant beliefs concerning us at the time, TRINIDAD is indispensable. In a world that demeans, dehumanizes and discriminates against trans people, it is the story of a doctor who offered them a sense of ownership over their bodies. Ultimately, it’s a brutal telling — hard to read, though vital to hear."

In ‘Going to Trinidad,’ histories illuminate — and obscure — the outcomes of gender transition.

To mark this year, David Helvarg, author of THE WAR AGAINST THE GREENS, reflects on how the US went from being a leader in environmental stewardship fifty years ago to "doing all [we] can to dismantle the nation’s green legacy and sell it off for parts."

Fifty years after the first Earth Day, the connection between the environment and human health has never been more obvious.
